Correct funeral preparations will help you say goodbye to the deceased with dignity. You can express pain and respect with written inscriptions on mourning ribbons.

I have spent the last few days, as they say, in sad troubles. Namely, she was one of the main participants in the funeral preparations. An elderly neighbor's wife died. We weren't exactly friends, but we were friends, despite on a decent age difference. And her husband periodically helped me: sometimes a rickety shelf on the kitchen will be corrected and strengthened, then the socket will be repaired. So What We are not strangers to each other, so I came to help.

Mourning tapes: symbolism andinscriptions

Of course, the main burden fell on the shoulders of the neighbor himself and his daughter, and I took on the task of purchasing various things necessary for the funeral. First of all, I was asked to buy wreaths from family, neighbors, friends and others at the funeral store who brought money to the deceased’s house to help, as is our custom. I really wanted to buyWhatsomething beautiful and make sure that all accessories match the same style. Therefore, I ran around about a dozen specialized stores. It's been a long time since I had to study such an assortment so carefully. I usually quickly choose a wreath or basket and that’s it. Immediately I had to approach the matter responsibly and consider everything very carefully. Need to say, WhatThe quantity and quality of modern ritual products simply amazed me. I was especially surprised by the abundance of opportunities to decorate wreath or a bouquet for a cemetery. Previously, this was done simply: they attached black or white paper to them. tapes with farewell inscriptions “by hand”. Now materials and technologies have changed a lot, everything has become much more impressive and, it seems, more durable.

Ritual decorations

funeral nature acquired significance back in the early jealous cultures. For most peoples of the past, death did not mean the complete departure of a person from life. Almost all old beliefs were animistic in nature. That is, it was considered What every body has a soul. She temporarily leaves the bodily shell during sleep, and finally leaves after death, but continues to live in another world. That's why, When a person dies, his soul must be seen off with honor. And so the body of the deceased was put in order, dressed in new beautiful clothes, often even painted. The grave was decorated with flowers and bright fabrics ( new house deceased), members and attributes of the funeral procession. To burial or on Necessary and beautiful things were placed on it that should have belonged to a person in the world of the dead.

Later, posthumous decorations began to take on a less utilitarian character and were gradually symbolized. For example, they stopped placing weapons or utensils in the grave, replacing them with images of the necessary things on the monument and the walls of the tomb. But the flowers and ritual fabrics remained material elements funerals in almost all cultures. Delicate beautiful plants spoke of earthly beauty and its transience, and fabric, matter symbolized the endless cosmos. It is not for nothing that in many mythologies the god who created the whole world was called A weaver. From time immemorial they began to make a shroud from pieces and ribbons of material, mourning

bedspreads, and later headbands, bows and trains. IN funeral tradition
This
The entourage has always been an integral part of a complex ritual that ensures the correct transition of the soul from one phase of existence to another.

  • In addition, people have learned to express their feelings through the semantic content of things. Each funeral accessory has become a carrier of not only sacred, but also emotional meaning. For example,among the Slavs in the pagan period were associated with the cult of the sun and the eternal rebirth of nature. They served as amulets against evil forces. Traditionally wreath associated with the ideas of new life, glory and honor, even power. In Christianity he acquired meaning "crown of sacrificial suffering" Savior in the name of atonement for human sins and became one of the symbols of faith in eternal life, forgiveness and resurrection. In many places funeral For example, began to be made from pine needles decorated with flowers. Evergreen branches spoke of endless life, and flowers - of its beautiful transience. More durable ones appeared later For example, from artificial materials.
  • Often wreaths intertwined fabric tape , forming a spiral - the infinity of space, God's world. On They also began to write farewell words with which loved ones spoke to the deceased for the last time. Sometimes it was texts short prayers. Such ribbons and now decorate funeral bouquets and others mourning attributes.
  • From tapes ritual bows and bandages are made. The bow has a double meaning. First of all, because of its shape associated with the butterfly, which is an ancient symbol of eternal rebirth and immortality, the soul. Secondly, Christianity sees a correspondence between the bow and the cross. The bandage is a kind of sign of mourning and belonging among many peoples. On At funerals, it is placed on the hands of the funeral directors carrying the coffin, and sometimes by the relatives of the deceased.

Mourning tapesnowadays they are made

from various materials. The most inexpensive are still from thick glossy paper. But they deteriorate very quickly, and inscriptions are erased on them. Therefore, now in most funeral stores they will most likely recommend you tapes from some dense and durable matter. I myself chose exactly these, because I know from my own experience, What they will still look presentable in six months. But paper ones may not really last for forty days. The most expensive were silk options, but I didn’t buy them, I took them from good dense satin.

Ribbon colors There are also very different ones. Here the choice should depend on how conservatively the relatives approach funeral arrangements. According to the old tradition mourning we considered flowers black, white and red, later added to them blue. These are still the most popular options that are often used in combination. For example, the main tone tapes one, and its edging, font inscriptions - different color.

Popular combinations of black and gold, white and silver or gold, red and gold or white, blue-gold and blue-white. Sometimes relatives choose tapes less traditional shades: blue, green, pink, lilac, etc. At the same time, many take into account the familiar color symbolism.

  • black – this is the color of mourning, grief and death;
  • white associated with innocence and the cosmic union of the entire color spectrum, such ribbons are bought for the funerals of young girls and priests;
  • red – a sign of sublime sorrow, love and power;
  • blue – this is heaven and immortality, loyalty and kindness;
  • gold color is associated with God, heavenly light, the light of faith;
  • silver, like white, with purity and nobility, in addition, it is considered a talisman against evil spirits and evil thoughts;
  • blue, pink – this is youth, the flowering of nature;
  • green symbolizes life, the rebirth of nature.

When preparing for the funeral of soldiers who gave their lives for the Fatherland, or government officials, they order tapes in the color of the state tricolor. By the way, I note that I have been to funerals in other countries and noticed bouquets there, entwined ribbons , colored to match the national flags. Moreover, the deceased were not at all connected with the authorities. Apparently, this is a special expression of patriotic feeling.

Words thatwrite on mourning tapes

usually express the grief of relatives and become farewells. Sometimes they indicate who brought it wreath (“From neighbors”, “From nephews”, “From loving grandchildren”, “With deep sorrow from the team”) or whose memory it is dedicated (“To my beloved grandmother”, “Dear beloved father”, “To my beloved person”). Modern funeral homes offer impressive catalogs of a variety of standard inscriptions of this kind. Many of them are actually short epigrams expressing mournful feelings: “Your beloved image is always in our hearts”, “We remember, we mourn”, “It is impossible to return you, it is impossible to forget.” Sometimes there are original ones inscriptions eg quotes from literary works, words from songs and even from films, sometimes slightly altered: “You lived a glorious life, you saw the sky!”, “The favorites of the gods die young,” “Rest in peace, our dear friend.”

All these words are now rarely written with a marker or brush, as before. Mostly more convenient technologies are used, increasingly digital. For example, letters are cut with a plotter and then glued onto fabric. There are also special printers. At worst, they use stencils. Due to new methods, it is possible to diversify fonts. In funeral companies, you will immediately be offered to choose an option from a dozen or two possible ones - from those stylized in Old Church Slavonic writing to the most modern ones.

Can be purchasedFrom time immemorial they began to make a shroud from pieces and ribbons of material, tapesand with drawings

First of all, with the help of ornamental images a complex edging is made on a strip of material (it is used instead of classical lines). The second option for using them is a continuous pattern on tape . Ornaments are usually divided into several types:

  • Religious nature (crucifixes, candles with a cross, figures of eight or circles with crosses inscribed in them, etc.). They refer to the symbolism of faith and denote certain religious ideas.
  • National , including the most ancient type (arabesques, Greek meander, Byzantine floral script, Egyptian cord, Russian or Ukrainian patterns, etc.), as a rule, have an ancient pagan character and are associated with ideas about the infinity of being, the constant rebirth of matter.
  • Abstract ornaments the most modern and have a rather decorative purpose.

There are mourning ribbons with more complex images, e.g. faces of Jesus or Mother of God, various Christian saints. As one of the constant motives on tapes use candle drawing as a sign of the soul, as well as of transitory life. Often two candles are drawn: a burning one means life, an extinguished one means death. Secular pictures are also symbolic. On ribbons for wreaths deceased military personnel are asked to depict 2 cloves– flowers of courage and victory. Or medal badges. And for children, sometimes they make ribbons with drawings of toys and animals.

As you can see, there are now truly a great many options for decorating ritual jewelry. But here What Interesting. From the point of view of world religions, excessive attention to the design of funeral accessories counts not exactly sinful, but completely unnecessary for later life souls of the deceased. For example, Islam, in principle, requires emphasized modesty in all rituals associated with death. Christian church also draws attention, first of all, to the correct observance of the necessary funeral canons, and otherwise calls for modesty.

But, despite religious principles, I myself could not resist choosing beautiful wreaths and spectacular ribbons for his neighbor’s funeral. I must say that her grief-stricken husband, to my surprise, carefully examined For example, , which I bought from him and other loved ones, and inscriptions on the tapes read it. And on the second day I went to the grave and for a long time, meticulously placed there For example, and baskets (their daughter already told me about this). So I was once again convinced that funeral accessories are needed primarily for the living. They somehow relieve stress.

Preparing for a funeral ceremony involves choosing essential attributes, including a funeral ribbon. The content of the attribute is important; it is aimed at conveying respect and the farewell words of the mourner. The ribbon is used to decorate a wreath or basket; it creates the composition necessary for the event. Flowers can be artificial or real; it is more important to pay attention to the content of the message.

  • From my beloved.
  • From my wife.
  • From friend.
  • From colleagues, etc.

The location of the inscription will depend on the shape of the wreath. If it is necessary to install the ribbon in the middle, then the flowers are not secured there. When the ends of the tape are used, the letters are placed in the middle and receded from the sides.

How to choose a ribbon

The color of the mourning ribbon is no less important than what is written on it. Most often used black ribbon color wreaths are decorated with red politicians or people of culture. At the funerals of children, young girls or priests, ribbons are used white. Military personnel are brought wreaths with the flag of Ukraine; other colors can be used according to at will relatives. Writing Rules White, gold and black are used as traditional colors for writing letters. The color palette was chosen due to the practicality of these shades. Letters for a long time remain clear.
