The eldership was based on service to the poor and continued until 1966. The history of the Optina Monastery includes its famous hieroschemamonks Lev, Macarius, Moses, Ambrose, Joseph and others.

Icon of the Optina Elders

The honor of becoming the first elder of Optina, by the great mercy of God, fell to Hieroschemamonk Leonid, better known as Leo, who organized the publication of spiritual literature at the monastery. Leo had a special gift of healing pilgrims with the help of oil from a lamp that was constantly burning.

Makar, a student of Leonidas, became famous for his prophetic gift; the Creator blessed him to see future events.

The Optina elders were engaged in translations of the holy fathers, and messages came out from their printing houses:

This text of the prayer of the Optina elders is practically non-confessional and very psychotherapeutic. A person who begins his morning with a meaningful and leisurely utterance of these or similar words has the most serious protection against any surprises and stress, especially those caused by our own stupidity and an abundance of nervous, hasty and fussy gestures.

For reference. Optina Pustyn is a monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church, located near the city of Kozelsk, Kaluga region. According to legend, it was founded at the end of the 14th century by a repentant robber named Opta (Optia), in monasticism - Macarius. At first there were only two monks in the monastery - both very old men, but then a monastery was built in the monastery. Especially honored “hermits” settled here - people who spent many years in complete solitude. The “elder” began to be in charge of the entire spiritual life of the monastery. Suffering people flocked to the monastery from all sides. Optina has become one of the spiritual centers of Russia.

In 1918, by decree of the Council of People's Commissars, Optina Pustyn was closed. First, a rest house named after Gorky was opened on its territory. Before the war, on the orders of L. Beria, the NKVD of the USSR converted the rest house into the Kozelsk-1 concentration camp, where, in anticipation of the exchange of prisoners of war between Germany and the USSR, about 5,000 Polish officers were placed, later sent to Katyn (and executed there).

During the Great Patriotic War On the territory of Optina Pustyn there was first a hospital, in 1944 - 1945 a testing and filtration camp of the NKVD of the USSR for Soviet officers returning from captivity, and after the war until 1949 a military unit was located. These are the weaves of history.

  Surrounded by picturesque nature, Optina Pustyn is located, which has known periods of darkness and lush flowering. Unfortunately, information about the real date and history of the emergence of the desert has been lost. But its name allows us to assume that the founder was Opta - dashing man, living in the 14th century. He carried out robberies and was famous for his cruelty and callousness.
