Studying the book by P.P. Revyakin "Technique" watercolor painting"M.1959, I really liked the examples of work
A.E. Arkhipova. For the most part, these are bright, rich paintings in which direct sunlight predominates. I wanted to know more about the work of this interesting artist.

About the life and work of A.E. Arkhipova

Works of Abram Efimovich Arkhipov (1862-1930)

Arkhipov is the son of a peasant in the Ryazan province. In 1877 - 1888 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. For some time (1884 - 1886) he studied at the Academy of Arts, but the decisive role in the formation of the painter was played by the Moscow school, the advice and instructions of his first teachers - V.G. Perov and V.E. Makovsky, and then V.D. Polenova. The precepts of peredvizhniki received from them and the blood connection with the Russian village determined the artist’s range of interests - he dedicated his art to the peasantry. In 1887, for the painting “Visiting the Sick,” Arkhipov received a large silver medal and the title of class artist at the Moscow School of Painting and Painting.
IN early works Arkhipov of the 80s, a new interpretation emerged genre painting. These are small paintings that simply and unpretentiously tell about village life.

In the 1890s, Arkhipov’s work was replaced by small paintings works come that express much broader ideas about life.
In 1891, Arkhipov became a member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions.
In the works “Along the Oka River” (1889, Tretyakov Gallery), “The Ice Has Gone” (1895, Ryazan Regional Art Museum) - instead of interior scenes with one or two figures, a wide landscape space appears; The horizontally elongated, panoramic format of the canvases becomes characteristic.

In the 1890s - early 1900s, Arkhipov created works imbued with dramatic social content. In the film “The Laundresses” (late 1890s, versions of the State Russian Museum and the State Tretyakov Gallery), the theme of the suffering of an oppressed person turned out to be connected with the fate of a Russian woman.

In 1898 he received the title of academician (full member of the Academy of Arts).
In 1904 he became one of the founders of the Union of Russian Artists.
In the first decade of the twentieth century, Arkhipov left genre painting. He works a lot on landscapes, painting mainly views of the Russian North - villages on the banks of cold and quiet rivers or lakes with their huts turned gray from frost and rain.

Sergey Georgievich Arkhipov(January 12, 1897 - March 25, 1991) - Soviet artist, teacher. Member of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR; honorary citizen of the city of Michurinsk.

Biography

Arkhipov was born and worked in the city of Michurinsk (Kozlov), Tambov region. He studied at the Kozlovsky Commercial School (1907-1915), where he took drawing lessons from the artist-teacher P. Ya. Arklin; in 1915-1916 - at the Moscow Commercial Institute. But he did not finish his education, he was drafted into the army, and participated in the First World War with the rank of ensign. Returning to Kozlov, he began to study in the workshop of A. M. Gerasimov, who created and directed the activities of the “Commune of Creativity of Kozlov Artists”. However, Arkhipov was soon called up again - this time to the Red Army. As part of it he fought on the fronts of the civil war. After demobilization he continued his education. In 1924 he graduated from the Moscow Institute of National Economy. Returning to Michurinsk, he taught at technical schools and the fruit and vegetable institute (now Michurinsk State Agrarian University). Participant of the Great Patriotic War.

Creation

On early work Arkhipov was affected by the events of the First World War and the Civil War. The leitmotif of the artist’s work of these years is the triumph of death. This period dates back to the creation of his handwritten illustrated book “Apocalypse,” which is an abbreviated version of “The Revelation of John the Theologian.” The book was created by him in 1919, when he was in Kazan. Here “Apocalypse” was purchased for the museum collection by the head art department Provincial Museum Pyotr Maximilianovich Dulsky. IN currently the book is kept in the collections State Museum Fine Arts of Tatarstan.

Arkhipov was a member of the Kozlov artists’ commune “Creativity” under the leadership of A. M. Gerasimov, with whom he maintained friendly relations. Acquaintance with A. M. Gerasimov had a great influence on Arkhipov and changed his views on painting:

At that time I was interested in impressionism, loved and studied Russian icon painting and wrote as a symbolist. However, he loved and appreciated Rylov, Turzhansky, Zhukovsky, and having learned Gerasimov, he loved him too. Under his influence, I began to noticeably move away from symbolism and began to work more in nature. It is interesting that Alexander Mikhailovich never told me anything negative about my works, but, nevertheless, I began to move away from symbolism to realism, I began to understand that I had to study and work a lot and hard

In his work, Arkhipov paid great attention to his hometown- Kozlov-Michurinsk. Thanks to his paintings, the appearance of his old streets, houses and churches, many of which have now been lost, has been preserved. Author of paintings on historical and religious themes (“Foundation of the Kozlov Fortress”, “Punishment of the Razintsy”, “Spas”); portraits of famous countrymen - I. V. Michurin and I. G. Rachmaninov; book illustrations. Arkhipov’s fundamental work is the handwritten text “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign.” Paintings by S. G. Arkhipov are exhibited in the Michurinsk City Museum of Local Lore, in the art gallery at the A. M. Gerasimov House Museum in Michurinsk, and in the Tambov Regional Art Gallery. The Michurinsky Museum of Local Lore contains handwritten memoirs of S. G. Arkhipov.

June 9, 2010 at the museum and exhibition complex of the Tambov regional local history museum The opening of the exhibition “Messages of Sergei Arkhipov. From creative heritage artist", from the collections of the Tambov Regional Museum of Local Lore, Tambov Regional art gallery And art museum Sergei Denisov, whose collection served as the basis for the creation of the exhibition.

The exhibition displays more than 100 works of painting, graphics, as well as memorial items, personal archive and photographs from a family album. For the first time, along with the works of Arkhipov the artist, his memoirs, diaries, literary essays, which allow you to hear the living voice of the author, to better understand his creative aspirations and experiences.

He studied at the Kozlovsky Commercial School (1907-1915), where he took drawing lessons from the artist-teacher P.Ya. Arklina, training at the Moscow School of Ensigns (1916), World War I, civil war- the feeling of horror happening to the country and people, the premonition of the bloody denouement of the universal tragedy was imprinted in a passionate, restless soul young artist- are reflected in his art.

Worldview, understanding of reality, which received a certain poetic and philosophical interpretation in entire series and drawings of 1915-1920, present the artist in a completely unexpected perspective for the viewer - merciless, discouragingly frank. There is no sleek veiling here; Arkhipov is far from the desire to be kind, flexible or pleasing. He is harsh and extremely frank in his assessments. The leitmotif of the artist’s work of these years is the triumph of death. She is a judge, an executioner, and even a musician. This is her all-consuming, terrible dance, amazingly dynamic and virtuosic, creating an unforgettable impression of what she saw.

Arkhipov's extensive knowledge of literature, music and, of course, art, found fertile ground for creative embodiment in numerous illustrations - engravings and drawings.

In Arkhipov’s work, turning to the origins and traditions of icon painting was a logical step in comprehending the lofty spiritual origin ancient Russian art.

Arkhipov created a whole series of works of religious content, a series of paintings and watercolors in which the color scheme of blue, lilac-brown, golden-ocher tones captivates with its balance and nobility.

Russian and Old Testament saints, the life of the province with its fairs and taverns, shopping arcades, where reality and fiction form an amazing fusion creative method and the plastic language of the artist.

Kozlov-Michurinsk was more than a homeland in Arkhipov’s life; it became a home for him, a source of inspiration and love. Therefore, images of streets, houses and estates, shopping arcades and churches became a real suite dedicated to the city. Without exception, all the city landscapes of old Kozlov are permeated with the aroma of a bygone era. The artist is passionate about conveying the special flavor of the provincial town in which he was born and lived almost his entire life.

Until recently, drawings, engravings and watercolors, unclaimed by their contemporaries during their lifetime, remained in numerous folders, awaiting their viewer. And our exhibition introduces not only works from the collection of a local history museum and a private collection, we get acquainted with unknown artist Sergei Georgievich Arkhipov.

Arkhipov is a man of his time, his era, but Arkhipov the artist stands outside the time frame. His art extends to future times, being one of the components of Russian national culture.
