The world premiere took place on December 1, 2016 in Moscow mystical show"Returned" The immersive performance, based on Henrik Ibsen’s play “Ghosts,” takes place on four levels of an ancient 19th-century mansion in the center of Moscow.

Modern immersive performance implies the full involvement of the viewer: each of them seems to find themselves in the world of films by David Lynch and Guillermo del Toro, in which a mystical action, full of hints and sensual temptations, will unfold at arm's length.

During the show, spectators, wearing masks that preserve their anonymity, are immersed in dramatic story mysterious family relations, where each of the heroes keeps a difficult secret from the past. In each of the 50 rooms, an action is played out in which two dozen actors skillfully mix the energy modern theater and incredible choreography, cinematic visual aesthetics and impressive special effects.

INTERNATIONAL TEAM

“The Returned” was the result of a creative and professional union of directors Victor Karina and Mia Zanetti from New York theater company Journey Lab and Russian producers Vyacheslav Dusmukhametov and Miguel- choreographer and mentor of the show “DANCE” on TNT.

“An immersive performance of this level was staged for the first time in Russia. In the work on creating the show, not only the dedication and professionalism of the team was extremely important, but also Newest technologies working with the audience and the experience of my American colleagues,” says show producer Miguel.

At the beginning of 2016, Journey Lab members made a prequel to the production in New York - The Alving Estate. He referred viewers to events that occurred two years before the action classical play Ibsen. Tickets for the performance were sold out instantly, and the response from critics was more than favorable. After success in Manhattan, Miguel invited Journey Lab to work in Moscow. And already in the spring of 2016, they began working together on creating the world premiere of “The Returned” in Russia.

“Working with Miguel was a great success for us: together with his team we created the whole world, with its own unique physical and moral laws,” says show director Viktor Karina.

Rehearsals for the international team lasted six months, during which time all participants became one family. Day after day, two dozen actors immersed themselves in the world of their characters, engaged modern choreography, learned to interact with the audience face to face and mastered unique training methods developed at Jorney Lab.

Therr Maitz leader Anton Belyaev is responsible for the musical design of the show, and the speakeasy bar of the show will soon receive a special music program with the participation of Russian and foreign artists.

GHOSTS

“Ghosts” or “Ghosts” is a play by the Norwegian classic Henrik Ibsen, written exactly 135 years ago, in 1881. Critics often compare the plot to a web of mysteries. A certain house is preparing for a big event: at the expense of the widow of the venerable captain Alving, an orphanage is to be opened in memory of her husband. Relatives and old friends gather on this occasion, but strange events and ghosts, as if returning from the past, tragically change the fates of all the heroes.

The play instantly became popular in Europe and the USA, it is studied in schools and universities and staged on the stages of leading theaters in the world. In Russia, the fate of “Ghosts” was shrouded in mysticism from the very beginning: soon after resounding success productions by Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vsevolod Meyerhold, it was banned and was not staged for decades.

Contemporaries recalled the unique solutions that Meyerhold used in the play: “Oswald was dressed all in black for all three acts, while Regina’s dress glowed bright red, only a small apron emphasized her position as a servant.” It was in “Ghosts” that Meyerhold first used his signature technique of “performance without a curtain.”

To convey the atmosphere of Ibsen's play in our time, the show's team of artists, decorators and costume designers recreated an interior that absorbed the spirit of the Nordic countries in a historical 19th-century mansion.

IMMERSION

Immersive theater has burst into the avant-garde contemporary art twenty years ago. The pioneers of the genre are the British Punchdrunk, whose main box office blockbuster - the show Sleep No More - has already years go by in New York and is preparing to premiere in Shanghai. At The McKittrick Hotel, behind each new door An adventure awaits you: someone hides a murder weapon in the water, someone tears off their clothes, dances or simply disappears behind secret door without a trace. Their London show The Drowned Man, co-produced with National Theater, was also a great success.

The noisy conspirators from the Secret Cinema group hold their happenings all over the world, skillfully turning giant abandoned hangars and train stations into scenery cult films Stanley Kubrick, Robert Zemeckis and George Lucas.

Several years ago, the immersive electric cabaret “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812,” based on Leo Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace,” received a bunch of independent US theater awards, including an Obie for best off-Broadway production of the year.

The aesthetes from the Third Rail troupe stand a little apart: they work in the genre of chamber productions, the most successful of which was Then She Fell based on the works of Lewis Carroll.

Jorney Lab members stand out an integrated approach: they not only stage unique interactive shows, but also use public city spaces in their performances, hold open master classes and are constantly open to collaborations, the result of one of which was the production of “The Returned” in Moscow.

The Moscow premiere immediately aroused great interest not only among viewers, but also among the professional community. “The Returned” became the headliners of the program of one of the most prestigious theater shows in the capital - the festival of the New European Theater NET.

Journey through the House

Before the start, spectators find themselves in a waiting area where there is a real bar, where they can have a drink and a snack before a difficult journey that threatens emotional shock. After this, they are given masks and given detailed instructions: do not take off the masks, remain silent, do not touch anyone, but be prepared to be touched. The Returned is distilled immersive theatre. This is now the customary name in Russia for all fashionable interactive productions. But in its pure form, such “immersiveness,” that is, the immersion and involvement of viewers in what is happening, as it was conceived in America back in the last century, has probably not been shown here before. That is, there were successful experiments, but here all the laws of the genre were observed almost for the first time with precision in detail, as in the New York production of Sleep No More, exemplary for this kind of performances, by the famous British group Punchdrunk.

The producers of our show Vyacheslav Dusmukhametov and choreographer Miguel decided to invite foreigners to stage the play. The directors of “The Returned” are Americans who spent six months in Moscow, accustomed our actors, and then us, the audience, to a new type of theater for our country. To do this, a mansion in the center of Moscow, where a bank with plasterboard was previously located, was completely vacated and brought into historical form, that is, the atmosphere of a mysterious house from the end of the century before last was recreated, where bad things happen on different floors. Viewers are masked and encouraged to walk through these living rooms, rooms, closets, laundry rooms and mysterious spaces and are left to explore the space for themselves. And this is where that ideal immersiveness manifests itself, when no one leads the audience by the hand, they themselves decide where to go, for what storyline keep track of which hero to join. That is, complete freedom is provided, which may even make many viewers feel uncomfortable and unpleasant, because it is in the psychology of our people that they are led somewhere by someone. But here you have to do it yourself, real democracy.

Inside the house, different scenes take place over the course of three hours, the characters of Ibsen’s play wander through the rooms, then unite at one point, for example, in the dining room, where the main action takes place, as in a real psychological theater. At the same time, the viewer can simply wander chaotically; there are even many hidden rooms and labyrinths. You can find something interesting for yourself, spy on heroes, living and dead, watch quite explicit scenes, for example, following young people who indulge in an orgy in a laundry room (all this is a spectacular choreographic scene that can remind erotic scene from Titanic, thanks to the fogged windows). But you have to be prepared, because someone might suddenly grab you by the hand, take you somewhere to a separate place, blindfold you…. But I won’t give away all the secrets of this mansion; this interaction, for example, happened to me, and it was very unusual, and I wish the same for you.

The most rational move for the viewer is to choose any character and follow him. For the late Captain Alving, the mistress of the house Fru Alving, or their son Oswald, who arrived from Paris, or for the maid Regina, who ultimately turns out to be a noble lady and illegitimate daughter that very dissolute captain, who turned out to be not at all pious, but quite a dubious person. But for me personally, the most interesting figure is the figure of the rather dissolute Pastor Manders, who experiences his sinfulness very emotionally, which is worth one scene of his sexual act with a painting depicting a naked woman. In general, this story is about lust and morality, about what Ibsen wrote. This is a play about skeletons in the closet that haunt you, about the secrets of the past that result in hereditary sins, suffering and illness. About the fact that nothing passes without a trace. It is precisely about these ghosts and those who have returned that the mother of the family correctly speaks in one key monologue: “This is something outdated, like ghosts, which I just can’t get rid of... all sorts of old outdated concepts, beliefs and the like. All this no longer lives in us, but still sits so firmly that it is impossible to get rid of it.” And, indeed, you will have to answer for everything. And vice is nearby, and who doesn’t have that? And every viewer should definitely feel this.

At the very least, the audience themselves become participants in this show, and it is precisely through this that the ghosts, who bashfully spy on all this and inevitably project what is happening onto their inner experiences, may even be revealed. Such a good psychoanalysis session. Because, really, it’s better to go through it all alone, from beginning to end. This is the only way you can feel everything to the end, maybe understand your ghosts. Try it, experience it for yourself. “The Returned” in Dashkov Lane. But don’t forget that this is not some kind of attraction or simple entertainment, everything here is much more emotional and, of course, can touch a nerve.
