Before their stage debut, they managed to captivate the audience as participants in the show. In the case of Monsta X, such a project turned out to be the singing competition “No Mercy”.

Shawn before his internship at Starship Ent. He was a trainee at JYP Entertainment for a long time, took first place in the audition in 2009, and was supposed to debut with GOT7 members JB and Jr., but for unknown reasons he left the company. In 2011, he performed the OST “Now we know why” for the drama “Protect The Boss”. In 2013, he starred in the video for the group D-UNIT (“Talk to my Face”), and was also a backup dancer for South Korean singer Lee Hyori during her promotion for the single “Bad Girls.”
Jooheon was a trainee at Starship Entertainment for 7 years. In 2012, he starred in two videos for the group C-REAL (“Sorry but I” and “Joma Joma”) and took part in the recording of the Mad Clown track “깽값”. During the internship, he replaced Mad Clown at a performance by the group Sistar, and performed at Starship X family concerts.
Hyungwon had been modeling for a long time before his internship, and also studied at BigBang's Seungri's dance academy.
Wonho was a popular Ulzhang model, worked with the Big Pai and Bubble Style brands, starred in the show Ulzzang Shidae, was a backup dancer for Sistar, and starred in the parody drama The Heirs with former Starship trainee Park Sunho.
Kihyun auditioned for Alpha Music and performed at various music festivals.
Minhyuk starred in PLAY PASTAR 6.
I.M was a member of the group Nu'Bility before appearing on the show No.Mercy, but left the group on June 1, 2014. The group's debut never took place. During the internship, he performed at the Starship X family concert.
Before the start of the No.Mercy show, Starship Entertainment had a team called NuBoyz, consisting of four people- two vocalists: Shownu and Wonho (performed under the pseudonym Shino), two rappers: Jooheon and Gan. In October 2014, they released their first mixtape, which included 5 tracks, and held a series of performances at Starship-X events, so many were surprised why the already formed team had to undergo a battle of survival with other trainees of the company. The reasons were not announced, and three guys from the NuBoyz team became part of Monsta X; the dissolution of the team was also not announced.

Show No.Mercy
Monsta X was formed during the survival show No.Mercy, in which Starship Entertainment, the agency representing artists such as SISTAR, Boyfriend, UNIQ (Yoo Seung Woo, Mad Clown, Junggigo, Jooyoung) brought together their forces with the channels Mnet and 1theK, with the goal of forming a new male hip-hop group.
The show featured collaborations with artists such as Rhymer, San E, Giriboy and Vasco, and tested the abilities of the agency's 12 trainees through various joint performances, combined with a fight for survival. In parallel with the show “No Mercy”, the show Deokspatch from the 1theK channel was released, in which viewers could get to know the trainees better. The episodes began and ended a week later than the show's main episodes.
No Mercy began with 12 trainees who were ranked from 1 to 12 based on their performance and the judges' scores. After each performance, once a week, trainees who showed poor results were eliminated from the show. In the final episode, which aired on February 11, 7 participants were announced new group, including a new intern who joined the show later than the others. The final lineup of Monsta X included: Jooheon, Shownu, Kihyun, Wonho, Hyungwon, I.M, Minhyuk.
Overall, the group gained interest even before their debut due to the members' solo activities and singles released during the No.Mercy show. One such single was "Coach Me", released on January 2, 2015, featuring San E, SISTAR's Hyorin, and Jooheon;

On April 27, I.M, together with Kisum, LilCham, Jace (participants of the show “Unpretty Rapstar”), and Bora (SISTAR), released a video for the track “Feedback”, under the stage name Adoonga.
On April 28, Jooheon released his first track "No No" from his mixtape "Middle Finger" (JUNG JI), featuring JustMusic Entertainment's BlackNut.
On April 29, it was announced that Jooheon would be joining the members of “Show Me the Money 4.” Also, before their debut, Kihyun and Jooheon performed the OST for the drama “Orange Marmalade” called “Attracted Woman” (“끌리는 여자 ").
Starting on April 30, 2015, Starship Entertainment began releasing individual debut teasers of the group members on a daily basis. The first teaser was with Jooheon, then Kihyun, Minhyuk, Hyungwon, Wonho, Shownu, and on May 6 the last teaser with I.M was released.

Debut
The group made their official debut on May 14, 2015 with the release of their first mini-album “Trespass” (“무단 침입”). On the same day, a video for the title song “Trespass” was released, as well as a performance on stage. music show"M!Countdown." The day before their debut, Monsta X held their first showcase "MelOn Premiere" and presented two songs there: "No Exit" and "Trespass".

2015

Trespass era
With the release of their debut album, the group carried out active promotion on the radio and various music and entertainment shows.
On May 20, a special video for the song “Trespass” (ver.Prison Break) was released, and on May 31, a special video for the song “Honestly” was released.
In parallel with the promotion of "Trespass", 1theK began filming the 2nd season of the show "Deokspatch", but it was prematurely renamed to "Deokspatch X" and this time only the members of the group starred in it.
On June 15, Starship Entertainment announced that Monsta X will be performing at a large-scale concert in the United States - KCON 2015, which will be held in Los Angeles.
On June 22, Wonho and Shownu took part in the filming of SISTAR's music video for the song "Shake it"
In July, the show SMTM4 began airing in which Jooheon took part, he appeared in 4 episodes.
On July 15, Monsta X returned to the stage to continue their promotions with the song "Honestly".
On July 16, Jooheon and Mad Clown released the music video for the track "Get Low".
On July 29, Kihyun took part in the filming of Yu Seung Woo's music video for the song "Youre beautiful", and on July 31, an acoustic version of the video was released.
On August 1st, Monsta X performed at KCON 2015 and held joint performance with GOT7, receiving a lot of positive feedback.

Rush era
After a short break, Starship Entertainment announced Monsta X's comeback with their 2nd mini-album in September, and from August 25 to 31, they began releasing new teaser photos, the first teaser was with I.M, then a teaser was released with Kihyun, Wonho, Shownu, Hyungwon, Minhyuk and the last one was a teaser with Jooheon. During a [V]app broadcast on August 30, Monsta X revealed the title of their new album and announced the exact date release. On September 7, the group returned to the scene, releasing their second mini-album "Rush" with a video for the title song of the same name. On the same day, they held a comeback showcase “MelOn Premiere”. The album "Rush" was released in two versions: Official ver. and Secret ver. On September 12, a dance version of "Rush" was released. On September 19, the group released a special video for the song “Amen”. On September 26, Monsta X announced their official fandom name: Monbebe (translated from French as “my baby”)

Hero Era
Towards the end of promotions for "Rush", on October 1, Monsta X released a special version of the video for one of the most popular tracks of the 2nd mini-album - "Hero", and on October 14 they announced the continuation of promotions with this song. Since October 15th, Starship Entertainment has been releasing two concept photos of each member every day. First was Kihyun, then Minhyuk, I.M, Wonho, Hyungwon, Jooheon and Shownu. On October 22, a digital repack of "Rush" was released and added a new version"Hero", in addition to the change in music, the group also changed the choreography for their performances, and also returned with a new concept, which is significantly different from the concept of the first mini-album.
