In fact, Arcania: A gothic tale was supposed to be called Gothic 4, but the huge conflict between Piranha Byte and Spellbound led to the fact that the former's right to the name was taken away, and the latter simply decided not to use it. That’s why the game was made by people who knew Gothic very well, but had never made it before.
The conflict even turned out to be beneficial. A gothic tale is an excellent “transitional” game from one state to another. For example, the combat system - Spellbound has dramatically moved away from the standard “rolls” into a slasher, making battles simpler, but more effective. I would like to collect feedback and even work on the next part - but alas.
Or, for example, the plot. The classic “Gothic” story about a nameless traveler, factions and portals is presented here head-on and without a bunch of side plot missions. Come and study - however, even here there were those dissatisfied with such a simplification.
And also graphics. Arcania looked amazing and painted luxurious landscapes, but all this was so unoptimized that no one could really appreciate it.
