Currently, living water is called alkaline water obtained using ionization devices - its popularity is growing all over the world. Is the secret of living water really discovered or is the question still relevant?

Discovery of Soviet scientists

The modern concepts of “living” and “dead” water are associated not so much with fairy tales and amazing transformations, but with the production of ionized water and the discovery of its medicinal qualities in the 60s in the USSR, and later in America, Japan, England and other European countries . In the Soviet Union, this discovery was made by scientists at the Gas Industry Research Institute in Tashkent, who were actually looking for the composition of a new emulsion for oil and gas drilling. However, by chance they came to medicinal waters.

Scientists used electrolysis of water: a direct electric current was passed through the water, and they used a vessel divided in half with a special material that allowed ions to pass through, but did not allow the water to mix. They soon noticed that water with a positive electrode (anode) tastes sour and is charged positively, and with a negative electrode (cathode) it tastes alkaline and is charged negatively. These waters retained their new properties for quite a long time when they were poured into different vessels.

The surprises didn't end there. In the process of experimenting with ionized water, it turned out that if you wash yourself with it, wounds, bruises and sunburns go away faster, and chronic eczema completely disappears. After placing cotton in activated water, changes were also noticeable - alkaline water promoted its growth, and acidic water disinfected the soil. It turned out that it can be successfully used to sterilize medical instruments.

All these experiments brought to mind folk tales about living and dead water, and these designations stuck to alkaline and acidic water. Intensively continuing the study of ionized water, scientists have created hundreds of inventions, including a household water ionizer, which the Japanese were the first to produce.

What is ionized water?

A water ionizer, passing ordinary drinking water through a direct electric current, produces two different types of water in the compartments. During electrolysis, water molecules, which are composed of hydrogen and oxygen, are divided into hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions. Salts dissolved in water are also divided into positive metal ions (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium) and negative (chlorine, sulfur, phosphorus and others).

Alkali metal, calcium, sodium and hydroxide ions are attracted to the cathode. The result is alkaline ionized (living) water with a slight negative charge and a hydrogen pH of 10-12. Non-metal ions (chlorine, phosphorus, sulfur) and hydrogen ions accumulate near the anode, which create ionized acidic (dead) water with a slight positive charge and pH 2-4.

Thus, the positive or negative charge obtained during electrolysis, which is called oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), as well as alkalinity or acidity, determined by the carbon pH, are the main parameters of ionized water. They are very different for both types of water. For example, if the redox process is negative, an excess of electrons remains in the liquid and it becomes an electron donor. Electrons are movement, and movement is life. This means that the more negative the ORP of water, the more free electrons it contains and the more “alive” it is. Positively charged water does not have enough electrons, so the liquid tries to use the missing electrons.

The pH level shows how many hydrogen ions are in the liquid. The indicator ranges from 0 to 14. Neutral water has a pH level of 7 - this means that it contains the same amount of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions

If the basis is hydroxide ions, then the pH increases from 7 to 14: the higher it is, the more alkali there is in the liquid. A decrease in the indicator from 7 to 0 indicates that the liquid becomes more acidic - its composition is dominated by hydrogen ions. Since ionized water in its structure and properties is much closer to the fluids of our body than simple drinking water, it is immediately included in life processes and has a comprehensive effect on health. This is the main advantage of ionized water.

Water structure

It is believed that the structure of ionized water is close to the structured water that contains the cells and tissues of a healthy body, therefore it is accepted as one’s own and can be instantly included in all processes.

In fact, structured water differs from ionized water in pH and redox potential, depending on the water ionization device and the materials used. Structuring is changes in the structure of water molecules (reducing the length of the molecular chain, changing the arrangement of molecules), and ionization is the process in which an atom or molecule gives or takes an electron from another atom or molecule.

The question of the structure of water is still one of the most controversial among specialists. For example, most traditional scientists do not accept and call the discovery of the Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto that the structure of water is influenced by the environment as pseudoscientific. Masaru Emoto, with microscopic photographs, argued that in nature, water molecules are arranged in a symmetrical shape that resembles snowflakes. Such structured water is found in sources, plant cells, such as melted snow and ice. However, the energy of negative emotions, cutting sounds and chemicals disrupt the patterns of molecules and turn everything into chaos. Tap water is also considered energetically polluted because it collects negative information and energy from the environment. According to Emoto's theory, the crystalline grid can be restored by classical music, prayers, and words spoken with love.

The second unclear question related to structure is water clusters - combinations of molecules of different sizes and structures, which still remain an unsolved chemical problem. Despite the fact that the intermolecular interaction between water molecules in clusters is very weak, they cannot be destroyed either mechanically or during the cooking process.

In living water, for example, in rain or melt water, a minimal number of clusters and unrelated molecules are observed. The body needs such water because large clusters, due to their size, cannot penetrate cell membranes - the body is forced to waste its energy to structure the water, but over the years these abilities are reduced.

Against acidification of the body

Since scientific research has confirmed that the modern Western diet, which causes acidosis or increased acidity in the body, is the basis of most chronic diseases, the study of this issue is gradually developing into an entire branch of science. Basic diets and especially research into the effects of alkaline water are relevant. Does science show that drinking alkaline water has health benefits?

It is necessary to distinguish between alkaline water, which can be obtained by adding soda and other additives to regular drinking water, and ionized alkaline water. Simple alkaline water is characterized only by a pH above 7, and the alkaline water obtained using the device is also characterized by negatively charged ions and microclusters, which play an important role in the process of interaction with cells and the effect on health.

In fact, despite hundreds of studies, the process of the effect of ionized water on the body is not yet fully understood. It is possible that different diseases are affected by different mechanisms.

For example, it was found that due to the large number of active carbon molecules, ionized alkaline water acts as a powerful antioxidant that finds and neutralizes free radicals, as they can damage cells and DNA, cause or contribute to the development of cancer, diabetes, ulcers, etc.

Most research suggests that ionized living water has the ability to prevent cancer, kill cancer cells and their proliferation. For example, in 2009, scientists at a medical university in Taiwan discovered that living water helps destroy leukemia cells. At the same time, Japanese researchers found evidence that this water can slow tumor growth by inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that provide nutrients to tumors. In turn, another study by Japanese scientists suggests the possibility of delaying the proliferation of cancer cells.

Many scientific works are devoted to studying the effects of ionized alkaline water on the prevention of diabetes. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, water has been found to destroy free radicals in the pancreas and thus protect cells that, if damaged, can cause diabetes.

Research suggests that alkaline water, as an antioxidant, works preventatively against a variety of ailments caused by free radicals. In addition, it slows down the aging process.

Dead water can also be consumed

Despite the fact that ionized acidic water has earned the designation “dead”, it has also been found to have a positive effect on the body - you just need to know in what cases such water can be consumed. This water has proven antibacterial qualities, which are provided by a positive charge, an acidic environment and a small amount of chlorine arising from salts dissolved in the water. Thus, this water serves excellently in the fight against bacteria, viruses and infectious diseases. By alternately drinking alkaline and acidic ionized water, you can cure flu, allergies, sore throat, hemorrhoids and other diseases. In addition, water manufacturers recommend using it as a disinfectant - from cutlery to toilets and floors.

Interestingly, ionizer manufacturers in most cases emphasize the benefits of living water, but in 2011 an innovative model, The Miracle M.A.X., appeared, which focuses on acidic water. It pioneered the use of Himalayan salt in ionizer technology to create water so acidic (pH 1.8) that it could cope with E. coli, Giardia, staphylococci and other viruses and bacteria that cause infectious diseases . The manufacturer claims that acidic water helps not only save half the cost of household chemicals, but also achieve an amazing effect in caring for the skin of the body, face and hair.

The voice of skeptics

Water ionizers have been available on the world market for about 30 years. During this time, millions of devices were sold, despite the fact that their prices range from several hundred to several thousand dollars or euros. However, water ionizers have no shortage of critics, both among ordinary non-believers and among scientists. What are the main arguments against ionized water?

American astronautics engineer Robert Slovak, who has been working in the industry of water purification and enrichment for more than 30 years, is one of those who calls water ionizers a deception of the people. He notes that producing water using an ionizer is not possible unless the source material, such as a tap source, contains sufficient alkali metals. “Ionized water with a high pH does not mean that this water has sufficient alkalinity,” says Slovak, and thereby expresses doubt that it is capable of reducing acidity and restoring the acid-base balance in the body. Scientists criticize ionizing filters and admit that they do not purify water well enough from pollution. In his opinion, they need to be combined with reverse osmosis filters, which would further increase the cost of this exercise.

The Canadian chemist, a former university teacher named after A. Simon Fraser Stephen Lawver. In water ionizers, he sees only a pseudoscientific system for improving water, which is supported by successful marketing, and even the name “ionized water” he calls just a sales gimmick that means nothing to chemists. “Pure water can be neither alkaline nor acidic, and it cannot be made so using electrolysis either. Alkaline water must contain metal ions - sodium, calcium or magnesium,” says the chemist. He finds the idea of ​​drinking alkaline water to neutralize potentially dangerous acidity in the body ridiculous. “The alkalinity of water is quickly suppressed by strong gastric acid,” says Lawver. “And when the contents of the stomach enter the intestinal tract, they are neutralized and become alkaline—so all water eventually becomes alkaline.” The chemist also points out that pH has no meaning: “Different parts of the body (and even types of cells) have very different pH values. The pH level of drinking water does not affect the pH of blood cells and body. Any doctor will tell you that no matter what we drink or eat, the body has an efficient mechanism that knows how to maintain, for example, a blood pH level between 7.35 and 7.45.

In fact, these are the main reproaches that critics express about the product called the fountain of youth and living water. Of course, a significant objection is that there is still a lack of high-quality and large-scale scientific evidence of the benefits that manufacturers and sellers of ionizers promise. Perhaps only time will tell whether ionizers and ionized water are a success story or just a successfully hyped deal.

There are several sources of negative charges entering the body. The most important external source of negative ions is air, followed by water.

Air.

It is known that fresh natural air is saturated with negative ions in the form of excess electrons “attached” to different air molecules, carrying a negative charge.

The air in the mountains is especially highly saturated with negative ions. According to measurements, 1 cubic cm of mountain air in Abkhazia contains up to 20,000 excess negatively charged particles.

And it’s not for nothing that most of the world’s health resorts are located in the foothills, and even better in the coastal foothills. Of course, in these places there are many healing factors, but the main ones are sun, air and water. The air there is certainly clean, but it is also highly ionized with negative ions. And the water there is mainly from mountain streams - that is, melt or rain. This means, firstly, it is cleared of all information pollution (due to the processes of evaporation, freezing, thawing), secondly, ionized and structured (due to electrical effects in the seething of mountain streams and the passage of heterogeneous mineral layers), thirdly - as rule with a slightly alkaline pH.

Well, the sun, the source of life on earth, needs no comment.

Clean sea air contains 2000-3000 ions per 1 cubic cm, the air of forests in central Russia - 600-800, the air of industrial cities - only 50-100 ions, and the air near TV screens and electrical appliances - almost zero. This happens because, for example, on the surface of a TV screen or computer monitor there is a small positive voltage, but quite sufficient to draw in negative ions from the air like a magnet, making it “ionically empty.”

Here you have the modern “hole” formed in the source of negative ions created by nature for the body!

For thousands of years, oxygen molecules, penetrating into the lungs and further into the blood, as a result of metabolic processes, give up the excess electrons attached to them to the blood, replenishing and maintaining its electrical charge.

Many of them are well known and there are usually many health resorts around them. There are also lowland forest sources of such “living” water, including in Russia. And what is important is that the water of all these sources is clean from contaminants in the broadest sense of the word and has a natural, reducing ORP (redox) and slightly alkaline environment. Natural “living” water, which is filled with living organisms, has exactly the same ORP and pH indicators.

And in our modern times, the main external channel (air) for the supply of negative charges in the form of air has greatly weakened, and the second? The second one also weakened. Why?

Firstly. Measurements show that the ORP of mountain and forest springs flowing from under the Earth, the ORP of well and artesian water is significantly lower than the ORP of surface waters. Therefore, if you drink water without leaving a forest spring, it is much healthier. And this is natural. Such water is closer in properties to the body’s blood. Surface water of rivers and reservoirs has a more oxidative (positive) potential and, in addition, it also contains a lot of other negative factors, such as homeopathic traces of drugs, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and a lot of all that... And often the water supply of our cities comes from these bodies of water.

How much do we now drink fresh spring or well water from sources located further from civilization? A little.

Secondly. Now many people prefer to drink various canned, carbonated and pasteurized drinks, which have an ORP that is even further from the blood potential, instead of plain water. We have forgotten how to drink just water. And it’s clear why. It is impossible to drink tap water without serious purification. Besides everything else, it's just tasteless. Therefore, we tint the water, sweeten it, and so on.

The term “invigorating” has become popular among some drinks. These are, of course, freshly prepared coffee, black and green tea. But what is surprising: their ORP is much closer to the ORP of blood than that of ordinary drinking or bottled water. A person subconsciously fulfills the “invisible desires” of the body and is drawn to them. But there is another significant disadvantage: tea and coffee have an acidic pH, which increases the acid load on the body. (see ORP and pH of coffee and tea)

So, almost everything is clear with the “natural suppliers” of negative ions for the body. They are significantly weakened.

So what, say opponents and critics of artificial ionization and alkalization? Artificially alkalinized water will still not reach the blood in an alkaline state, since already in the stomach it will mix with gastric juice and change its pH to acidic. Everything is correct, but no one says that alkaline water must necessarily bring its pH to the blood. Most likely, alkaline water simply reduces the acid load on the body (see list above), and therefore helps it maintain and balance the pH of internal waters.

Now scientists and nutritionists have begun to calculate a new indicator - the acid measurement of food. Each product has its own coefficient calculated - alkaline (sign (+) or sour (sign (-). This has nothing to do with the taste of the food. Simply, when digesting and assimilating this food, more acids or alkalis are formed in the body.

When calculating the average diet of a modern person, it turned out that the acid load on the body is plus 48, that is, the food is more acid-forming. So what, you ask?

But according to anthropologists who studied the nutrition of ancient man, the acid load on the body averaged minus 78, that is, the food was more alkali-forming. A big difference? Essential. Moreover, there was a shift in nutrition from alkali-forming to acid-forming. How did this happen?

This is explained by the diet of modern people with various canned, refined, pasteurized foods and drinks. Many of our table foods are acid-forming. This has absolutely nothing to do with the taste of the food. It’s just that when they are digested and absorbed in the body, more acids are formed than alkalis. What are alkaline-forming foods? There are much fewer of them in our diet.

Almost all modern carbonated water and lemonades, pasteurized juices and drinks, and beer have an acidic reaction. And spring, well and still bottled water, as a rule, has a near-neutral or slightly alkaline pH, which almost corresponds to the pH of the blood.

But modern people rarely drink plain drinking water. Partly because plain tap water is tasteless and we constantly sweeten it, color it, carbonate it, etc. Just to make it more enjoyable to drink. And if you brew tea or coffee, the pH of such drinks suddenly becomes acidic, which increases the acid load on the body.

That's why we acidify. With such nutrition, it becomes increasingly difficult for our body to maintain an alkaline environment on its own. And an alkaline environment is a necessary condition for the functioning of many enzymes in the body. For example, a deviation of blood pH by only 0.1 in both directions is dangerous for the body and threatens serious illness.

To maintain an alkaline blood pH, the body begins to flush out alkaline-forming calcium and magnesium ions from the body and bones, which balance the blood pH, but weaken our bones and the body as a whole. Hence - osteoporosis and a host of other diseases.

Therefore, it is important that the liquids we consume are a little closer in properties to our internal waters, namely negatively charged and alkaline.

But since scientific and technological progress violates the natural state of pH, then it was he who came up with devices for artificially maintaining it. This can be achieved using electrolytic activators and water ionizers, giving it the required negative charge and alkaline pH.

Note that you should not try to drink water with a high reducing ORP and a high alkaline pH, as many people try to do. It is a mistake to think that the more negative the ORP value, the better for health. And that means it should be as low as possible (-600-700) mV and even lower, and pH = 10 and higher.
