The 2017 World Hockey Championship starts in Europe. The Russian team is traditionally among the leaders of the tournament..

Today, May 5, the 80th Ice Hockey World Championship started in Europe. Fans of the Russian team are excited and tense: our team is among the leaders. Of course, everyone expects the best result. The 2017 World Cup is taking place in two countries: France and Germany. In the first, hockey players fight in an arena in Paris, and in the second, in Cologne. Ice sports competitions will take place from May 5 to May 21.

TEAM RUSSIA AT THE 2017 WORLD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

A total of 23 athletes went to the World Championships. The opponents' goal will be attacked by: Sergey Andronov, Nikita Gusev, Alexander Barabanov, Evgeny Dadonov, Vadim Shipachev, Kirill Kaprizov, Nikita Kucherov, Sergey Mozyakin, Vladislav Namestnikov, Valery Nichushkin, Sergey Plotnikov, Andrey Svetlakov, Roman Lyubimov, Ivan Telegin, Vladimir Tkachev and Artemy Panarin.

Anton Belov, Alexey Bereglazov, Vladislav Gavrikov, Bogdan Kiselevich, Andrey Mironov, Artem Zub, Mikhail Naumenkov, Ivan Provorov and Viktor Antipin will stand in defense.

And Andrei Vasilevsky, Igor Shesterkin and Ilya Sorokin will change in goal.

Sergei Mozyakin became the captain of the Russian team. This place was predicted for Alexander Radulov, but he refused to participate in the championship. Vadim Shipachev and Anton Belov were chosen as assistant captains.

The composition of this year's team can be described in two words: a change of generations. This time, the invincible Alexander Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, Andrei Markov and Sergei Bobrovsky did not go to the World Cup. However, they gave way to equally talented newcomers.

GROUP A AT THE 2017 HOCKEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: RUSSIA, SWEDEN, USA AND OTHERS

As a result of dividing the teams into groups, Russia ended up in Group A. In addition to the Russians, the teams of Sweden (the main leaders of the World Cup), Germany, Italy, Denmark, Latvia, the USA and Slovakia were also included there. All matches in this group will take place in Cologne, Germany. This means the German national team will play on their own ice.

In addition, two quarter-finals, both semi-finals, a final and a match for third place will take place in Cologne. The remaining matches (i.e. Group B games and the two quarter-finals) will take place in Paris.

The main leaders of the championship are Canadian athletes. Also, as mentioned above, Sweden and Russia are competing for gold awards.

Sweden is the world champion, Russia is again in third place

On the night from Sunday to Monday, the next World Hockey Championship ended. The Swedes defeated the Canadians in the final, Russia took the bronze medal. Let's summarize the results of the tournament.

All hope for the "Buffalo Generation"

Traditionally, the World Cup is not ranked among the best hockey players in the world. Overseas clubs prefer to take care of the health of their personnel and do not send their main stars to national teams. Our team regularly becomes an exception to the rule: every year during the tournament, players of the caliber of Ovechkin, Malkin and Datsyuk joined the team.

This year, none of the three listed leaders were on the team. Malkin is still fighting for the Stanley Cup, Ovechkin was injured during the playoffs, and Datsyuk is no longer in the same condition due to his age. That is why the burden of responsibility at this tournament fell on new stars of Russian hockey, who became famous after the legendary 2011 World Cup finals in Buffalo. Kucherov, Panarin, Namestnikov and Vasilevsky were in the lineup before the start of the tournament, Kuznetsov and Orlov joined during the championship.

The team also included KHL stars: the St. Petersburg troika Dadonov-Shipachev-Gusev, the unyielding Moscow army players Telegin and Andronov, as well as the leader of Magnitogorsk Metallurg and captain of the national team Sergei Mozyakin. It was the latter’s injury before the start of the tournament that probably affected the team’s confidence in the decisive moments of the tournament. But more on that later.

Let's start for health

In the first match of the group stage, the team had to fight with the future champions - the Swedish national team. After a stubborn fight during the main time of the match in the shootout victory was won. This was followed by two defeats in games with Italy and Germany, 180 minutes without missing a goal and a defeat in a principled game with the US team in the final match of the group stage.

At the end of the group stage, the team made a mixed impression. On the one hand, the guys took on the outsiders very confidently, and the attack looked especially powerful: 35 goals in 7 games- an impressive figure. On the other hand, the defeat in the match with the Americans deprived the team of leadership in the group, so before the 1/4 finals the team had to move to Paris and the Czech national team as an opponent.

Adventures in Paris

The price for the defeat of the Americans was parting with the already familiar ice of German Cologne and the heat (in every sense) in Paris. There were some adventures: due to a 3-hour train delay and traditional Parisian traffic jams, the team got to training accompanied by police motorcycles and cars.

Unlike our guys, the opponents did not have to get used to the Parisian heat: the Czechs played all their group stage matches at the AccorHotels Arena. However, in the match itself, our team had the advantage. Despite fears of poor defensive performance after a poor performance against the USA, the team played to zero and confidently won with a score of 3:0. Another striking match was played by the star line Panarin-Kuznetsov-Kucherov, earning 5 scoring points between the three of them.

In a parallel game, Canada competed with the hosts of the tournament, the German national team. Despite the frivolous attitude towards the World Championship overseas, the resource of the “maple leaves” is so impressive that the Canadians came to the tournament not only as the reigning champions, but also as the main favorite of the tournament. Having passed the group stage without any problems, the young Canadian stars faced serious opposition in the quarter-finals. The Germans were close to a sensation, but in a bitter struggle they still lost to the “founders” of hockey with a score of 2:1. Thus, In the semi-finals, a hockey classic awaited us - Russia versus Canada.

Let's start with health. Version 2.0

In recent years, the Russian team has been experiencing serious problems in matches with the Canadians. A 3:7 defeat at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, 6:1 in Prague in the 2015 World Cup final, a fresh defeat in the World Cup semi-finals in Toronto. However, before the upcoming semi-final the opponents' chances were assessed as equal. Moreover, some Canadian stars had serious concerns about the result before the match. Matt Duchaine, for example, sensationally stated: “If we don’t make the transition from defense to attack, Russia will destroy us.” One way or another, a real battle awaited us.

In the first period, the teams looked more closely at each other, but visually The Russians were more likely to have the advantage. The show began in the second third of the match. It must be said that during the first half of the game the Russians played very disciplined, never retired (unlike their opponents) and in the end achieved an advantage. In the middle of the second period, our strongest line Panarin-Kuznetsov-Kucherov played a brilliant combination in the best traditions of domestic hockey, Kuznetsov scored again against the Canadians – 0:1.

A few minutes later, the Canadians once again received an unnecessary removal and were immediately punished. Again a spectacular combination performed by our hockey players, and Nikita Gusev increases the lead – 0:2. It must be said that Russia played the second period almost perfectly; unfortunately, they failed to increase the score, although the opponent floated.

At the end of the period, our hockey players earned dubious deletion. Thus, the guys entered the third period in the minority. What happened next is history. And the story is sad. The Canadians realized the majority with lightning speed. 1:2. Then, during the final 5 minutes, they scored 3 more goals. 4:2, an incredible comeback by our eternal rivals. For the second year in a row, Russia is one step away from the finals.

And again bronze

After a disappointing defeat in the semi-finals, a barrage of criticism fell on the national team's hockey players. However, there was no time to relax, because already the next day they had to fight with the Finns in the fight for bronze.

Despite the abundance of injuries after a difficult battle with the Canadians and an unimportant psychological state, the team tuned up and started the game again. The Russians spent the first half of the meeting with a huge advantage - 4:0 on the scoreboard. However, 27 seconds before the end of the second period, the Finns pulled one goal back, after which the “validol” began again.

During the third period, the Finnish team scored two more goals, and our team became very afraid - another “comeback” would have been very difficult to endure. That is why Kucherov's puck, which put an end to the confrontation, was abandoned just in time. 5:3, the Russian team won bronze at the World Hockey Championship for the second year in a row.

In the last, main match of the tournament The teams of Canada and Sweden fought for the world title. The entire match was extremely sticky, with a lot of fighting and a minimum of effective actions. Both goals were scored in the power play: first, at the end of the second period, Swedish defender Victor Hadman opened the scoring. Already in the third period, the Canadians realized the majority - Ryan O'Reilly scored.

After a hard fight in overtime the fate of the title was decided in a shootout. 3 saves from the legendary Henrik Lundqvist bring Tre Kunur victory in the final – The Swedish national team becomes the 2017 world hockey champion.

For the first time in the history of world hockey championships, two countries will jointly host the tournament

Head coach of the Russian hockey team Oleg Znarok (right in the foreground) during the team's open training session

The World Hockey Championship starts on Friday in Germany and France, the tournament will be hosted by Paris and Cologne.

For the first time in the history of world hockey championships, two countries will jointly host the tournament. Moreover, the Germans have quite a lot of experience in hosting it - they hosted the championship eight times, seven of which as a full-fledged host. The previous time the tournament was held in Germany was in 2010, when matches took place in Cologne, Mannheim and Gelsenkirchen.

France hosted the competition only four times, including the second tournament in 1930. It is officially believed that the last world championship in this country was held in Grenoble in 1968, then it took place as part of the men's Olympic tournament.

Tournament in memory of Müller

The current World Cup will be held in two arenas, which, although they were built a long time ago, cannot be called outdated. Cologne's Lanxess Arena, which is capable of hosting various types of public events, was opened in 1998 and seats 18.5 thousand people at hockey matches. The Palace is the largest hockey arena in the world outside of North America.

The Paris AccorHotels Arena, better known as the Bercy Sports Palace, was built in 1984 and reconstructed in 2015. The arena will host major hockey competitions for the first time; previously it hosted, for example, the Davis Cup tennis final, two Final Fours of the European Club Basketball Championship and the Final Four of the Euroleague Basketball, and karting competitions. The palace can accommodate 14.5 thousand people for hockey events.

Notable is the tournament logo. It depicts the silhouette of German goalkeeper Robert Müller, who at 28 died in May 2009 from a brain tumor. In this regard, the German Hockey League permanently assigned him the number 80, under which Müller performed.

Cologne and Paris will host matches of the preliminary stage of both groups, as well as two games of the 1/4 finals. After which the main events will unfold in Cologne, where the semi-finals, the match for third place and the final will be played. The Russian team will compete in Group A with the hosts of the competition, as well as teams from Sweden, Italy, Denmark, Slovakia, Latvia and the USA.

It is already known that there are practically no tickets left for the first match of the Russians on May 5 with the Swedes, all tickets have been sold for the game on May 8 Germany - Russia. About 1 thousand tickets remain for the final match of the Russian national team with the Americans. This demand is associated with the large domestic diaspora in Germany.

For domestic teams, Germany should be called a good place in terms of performances at the World Championships. The USSR national team won tournaments then held in Germany (1975, 1983), and the Russian team won its first gold in Munich in 1993. In 2010, the Russians reached the final, which was also held in Cologne.

Waiting for the landing from "Washington"

The Russians entered 22 players for the tournament, as coach Harijs Vitolins announced on Wednesday - three goalkeepers, seven defenders and 12 forwards. 28 players arrived in Cologne, three of whom could not train according to the regulations of the International Hockey Federation - there can only be a maximum of 25 hockey players on the ice during training.

On Thursday it became known that the coaching staff decided not to include defender Alexei Bereglazov, as well as forwards Kirill Kaprizov and Andrei Svetlakov in the application for now. Later it became known that defender Mikhail Naumenkov, as well as forwards Valery Nichushkin and Roman Lyubimov, who spent this season in the National Hockey League (NHL) club Philadelphia, were not included in the application.

The team's management left three vacant spots for troops from the NHL, hoping that someone would be released after the end of the match in the second round of the Stanley Cup pair Washington - Pittsburgh, where several Russians play, including Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin. Loses to Nashville and St. Louis, where one of the best domestic scorers Vladimir Tarasenko plays.

Mozyakin will remember silver Cologne

The average age of the current Russian team is 25 years. In attack, hopes are placed on the best sniper of the NHL Tampa Bay club and the third sniper of the regular season this season, Nikita Kucherov, who is expected to play at the world championship for the first time - he had previously played for the national team only at last year’s World Cup, like his partner in "Tampa" Vladislav Namestnikov. Together with them, SKA forward Nikita Gusev plays in the same line, who began his journey in hockey together with Kucherov at the same hockey school.

The bet is also placed on one more link, in which there is a connection in the person of Vadim Shipachev and Evgeniy Dadonov - both won the Gagarin Cup of the Kontinental Hockey League last season. Playing with them is the forward of the NHL club Chicago Artemy Panarin, who before leaving for the NHL played with Shipachev and Dadonov in SKA.

Head coach Oleg Znarok and defender Ivan Provorov, who only turned 20 this year, took to the national team, but he has already become the main defender of Philadelphia and will also make his debut at the World Cup. The first number among goalkeepers will be Tampa goalkeeper Andrei Vasilevsky.

It was expected that Ilya Kovalchuk and Pavel Datsyuk would perform at the World Championships. However, both St. Petersburg army players were plagued by injuries. Datsyuk missed the last two rounds of the Gagarin Cup - the semi-finals and finals, and Kovalchuk played the playoffs with an injury and flew to Germany for surgery.

The only veteran of the team can be called its captain Sergei Mozyakin, for whom this season is rightfully memorable. The Magnitogorsk Metallurg forward set a number of performance records during the season, becoming the best domestic sniper and scoring the first 1000 points in domestic hockey. Mozyakin failed to become a three-time winner of the Gagarin Cup this year, but has a chance to win the third world championship gold of his career. In 2010, Mozyakin became a silver medalist; he is the only one from the current squad to compete at that tournament.

The current world champion team of Canada will begin to defend its title in Paris, where it will play in Group B with the hosts, as well as rivals from the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Belarus, Switzerland, Norway and Finland. The Canadians are led by Tampa Bay head coach John Cooper. In each line of the “maple leaves” there are those who won the world championship last year in Moscow.

French searches

The tournament in Paris and Germany has not yet begun, but there is already a scandal. The Belarusian team, which came to Paris from Bordeaux, where they played the EuroChallenge match, was searched by the local police. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry summoned the French ambassador to get an explanation, and then expressed a protest. As for the hockey authorities, the organizing committee of the French part of the World Championship apologized to the Belarusian Hockey Federation, and the President of the International Hockey Federation, Rene Fasel, visited the training session of the Belarusian team and also apologized.

“You know this could be related to both safety and anti-doping matters. We are trying to get an answer from the French side,” Fasel told TASS. - Of course, this is not a solution when this happens right at the station in front of people. We are trying to find the reason why this happened, we hope that this will not happen again.”

It should be noted that only the US team is not among the predicted ones. They lost the match to the finals today. But the most important thing is that our team advanced and got the opportunity to win gold. Now everything depends on our guys, who will fight to the last.

A little about today's games. Russia played the Czech Republic and the USA played Finland first, wordyou.ru reports. Our team won with a score of 3-0. The first two goals were scored in the first period, and the last one in the third. Dmitry Orlov, Nikita Kucherov and Artemy Panarin distinguished themselves in today's game. The last teams to play today were Sweden and Switzerland and Canada and Germany. Both matches went as predicted. Sweden defeated Switzerland 3-1 and Canada defeated Germany 2-1. The first and last goal by Germany was scored in the last minutes of the 3rd period, however, this did not save them.

Hockey World Cup 2017: schedule of playoff matches - semi-finals. So, let's summarize. Our team will play in the semifinals with the Canadian team. It should be noted that it will obviously not be easy for the guys, but all of Russia believes in them and our victory. The match will take place at 21:15 on 05/20/17. Sweden and Finland will play on the same day, only at 16-15.

Russia - Czech Republic: match review from May 18, 2017

In fact, the entire game was done in the first period. The Czechs started the match actively, trying to put pressure on the Russians in their penalty area, provoking them to break the rules. And at first they managed to do it - Andronov left our team in the minority already in the 3rd minute, but the opponent failed to take advantage of the chance.

Soon our hockey players leveled the game and already in the 9th minute Orlov picked up the puck in the opponent’s zone and with a masterful throw threw it into the lower right corner of the goalkeeper.

Six minutes later, Kuznetsov, after an excellent pass, made a targeted pass to Kucherov, and he shot the goalkeeper with an accurate throw into the near “nine”.

The fans had to wait almost 40 minutes for the third and final goal. Artemy Panarin used Belov’s precision pass and, going one-on-one, did not miss his chance.

3:0 - a confident victory for the Russians takes them to the semi-finals of the World Championship, which will be held on May 20 in Cologne.

The 81st IIHF World Championship will be held in 2019. Its duration is from May 5 to May 21, 2019. For the third time it is held by two countries - France. France will organize matches in Paris, Germany in Cologne.

The last time Paris hosted the World Hockey Championship was a long time ago - 65 years ago. In 1968, at the 1930 World Hockey Championship in France, all matches were played except the last three. They were held in Austria and Germany. Germany has hosted seven Ice Hockey World Cups, most recently in 2010.

Choosing a venue for the 2019 Ice Hockey World Championship

Initially, four countries submitted an application to host the World Hockey Championship in 2019, and they teamed up in pairs. These are Latvia with Denmark and Germany with France. before this, the Germans and French applied separately and competed with each other. Then they came to an agreement, apparently calculated all the pros and cons and put forward a joint application. In this case, Latvia and Denmark were unable to provide worthy competition and dropped out of the competition. It was decided to give away the right to host the 2019 World Hockey Championship at a meeting of the International Hockey Federation on May 17, 2013 in Stockholm.

Who is participating in the 2019 IIHF World Championship

The countries France and Germany participate in the World Cup in any case; they are the hosts of the tournament. They already qualified for the championship, taking into account the results of the 2019 World Cup. The teams of Italy and Slovenia in the first division of the 2016 World Cup were in the first two places, they are also participating. These four are added to the 12 teams that qualified for the 2019 World Cup. This makes 16 teams.

Rules for the 2019 Ice Hockey World Championship

All 16 teams are divided by 8 into two groups. The group stage of the tournament, as always, takes place at the World Cup in a round-robin format. The teams that take the first four places in the group advance to the playoffs of the competition. The team that took the last 8th place in each group is relegated to the 1st division of the 2018 World Cup.

It is interesting that the national team from Denmark, having taken eighth place in the group, will not be demoted in qualification to the 1st division at the 2018 World Cup. It is the country that organizes the 2018 World Hockey Championship. The team that takes penultimate seventh place in the group will be relegated from the top division.

Mascot at the 2019 IIHF World Championship

The official mascot of the 2017 World Hockey Championship was chosen to depict characters from European films and comics. These are the Gauls Asterix and Obelix, they are known all over the world. IIHF - The International Hockey Federation has approved this mascot.

The organizers of the 2017 World Cup in the German hockey federation consider the choice of the mascot to be very successful. These characters are popular, especially in Germany and France. Souvenirs with their image should be snapped up. Obelix and Asterix should further attract attention to the competition.
