The girl can almost accurately name the speed of a car passing by thanks to mental arithmetic, and when asked by jury member TV presenter Olga Shelest whether she has a formula, she admitted that she does, but she still needs to quickly apply it.
“Yes, I have a certain formula. But we still need to fold it quickly,” said Manizha Toshbotaeva.
To test her abilities, the authors of the show organized races of three cars at a special race track in Moscow, and invited another member of the jury, dancer Evgeniy Papunaishvili, to compare the girl’s readings with the radar. The first car drove at a speed of 69-70 km/h, and Manizha, in turn, said 66 km/h. The second time the deviation was 3 km/h (the participant said 76 km/h, whereas real speed was 79-81 km/h). The third car drove at a speed of 145 km/h, and Toshboltaeva announced 149 km/h.
The presenter and members of the jury admitted that they were amazed by the girl’s ability and asked to reveal her secret.
“I count the time, well, with the help of my hand, that is, so that the seconds are accurate, then I divide the distance by time. And to convert to kilometers/hour, I multiply by 36 and divide by 10,” she said. 
The young Dushanbe native was also featured in a story on the Morning of Russia program on Thursday, October 19, as part of the announcement of the next episode of Amazing People.
“I need some kind of rhythm, this is how I count time. You know, I don’t really count the seconds “one or two”. For me, they somehow appear on their own, or something,” the participant shared.
Manizha admits that she did not always like mathematics. It was even her least favorite subject, and at the end of the quarter she always got grades of three or four, which made her very worried and even cried. Everything changed when her mother opened The educational center in mental arithmetic - it was there that she began to understand and love mathematics.

They met when Olga Shelest, a third-year student at the Institute of Television and Radio Broadcasting, was hired as a presenter on the BIZ-TV channel, where Alexey worked as a producer. “At the first meeting, he seemed rude to me,” Olga admits. - He said with such emphasis: “Tomorrow morning you will have a shoot on the street, don’t be late!” He himself was two hours late, and we were all waiting for him in the terrible cold - it was the end of November. And then in the shot he forced me to eat ice cream and commanded take after take: “Eat, eat some more!” More fun, more joyful!” I swallowed pieces of this ice cream, my lips turned blue, my fingers became stiff, but I thought to myself: “Even if I get sick and die, I will never complain to this pompous monster.” And after filming, Alexey suddenly showed touching concern: he sat me in a company car, took my hands in his and began to warm them with his breath.” “I, who was accustomed to the fact that girls are terribly capricious, were amazed by Olya’s restraint,” says Alexey himself. - A few days later I gave her an even tougher test of strength. We filmed a story in which Shelest had to master an ATV. And although she jumped on it over bumps up to three meters high, I did not hear a single squeak from her. I watched in fascination as this girl fearlessly rushed around on a rather dangerous thing, and... fell in love!” True, when Olga decided to train a tiger in the “Circus with the Stars” project, Alexey was less happy about her courage.
I surprised my colleagues. If Olga amazed Alexey with her fearlessness, then she struck other colleagues with its consequences. One day her passion for extreme sports led to disastrous result. The waves threw Olga off her surfboard, hit her in the face with the board and threw her ashore. “I touch my nose with my hand and realize that it is not there. It moved to the right and there it became immense in size,” recalls Shelest. And in a few days she had to star in the film “Bride at Any Cost”! “I mentally said goodbye to the role and called the director,” Olga recalls. “He said that he wouldn’t have time to find a replacement and we’d come up with something: “In the end, we’ll film you from afar.” When I came to film set- everyone fainted... Even if you film me from afar, nothing will work. There are bruises under the eyes, and instead of a nose there is a huge bluish potato. But then the make-up artist came, calmed everyone down and in half an hour made me the former beauty. Fortunately, everything healed, my septum was corrected - my nose is now the same.” After giving birth to two daughters, Olga left surfing. But she put her eldest daughter Muza on a snowboard when she was just a little more than a year, which once again surprised everyone.
I was surprised myself. In Amazing People, Olga was most struck by a girl who is only a year and a half older than her daughter and is already fluent in seven languages. “Our Muse goes to kindergarten, where children are given English language. As a child, I practiced dancing and football from morning to evening, and I missed it. I was torn into molecules, and my trainers did not know how to curb me,” admits Evgeniy. However, he soon found a way out on his own: at the age of 12 he began teaching dance to other children, and at 14 he recruited a group of first-graders at school and began officially teaching. “Dancing is a rather expensive sport, and I somehow wanted to protect my parents from expenses, because they did not have any special financial resources,” explains Evgeniy. “I wanted to earn money myself to pay for my classes, performances, and trips to championships.” Now Papunaishvili has two dance schools. He also has enough energy to participate in the NTV channel show “You are super!” Dancing" for children left without parental care, and give free dance lessons to everyone in one of the Moscow parks. But I like it,” admits Evgeniy. “I’m very glad that my wife is like this: it’s not boring with her.” I couldn't live with an amoeba." This couple never tires of surprising the audience. Evgeniy proposed marriage to his beloved, kneeling in front of the entire football stadium. The marriage registration was also unusual. “We took a sports convertible and the two of us drove to the registry office,” says Evgeniy. - And near the registry office there are all these limousines, pigeons, rice flying... And here we are - absolutely not in the subject of weddings. I was actually wearing sneakers. People looked at us and didn’t understand: “Are these people getting married too?” It looked funny. We signed and went to my parents’ dacha. There were brothers and nephews, we had a great time, barbecued.”

Does she want her nose to be broken, her teeth to be knocked out?” After all, there were no female boxers in Nizhny Tagil except me.” Already at the age of 17, Ragozina became the European champion in kickboxing, and at 18 she won the world championship. Then she was invited to train in Moscow. Victories followed one after another. And not only in boxing. “One day they asked me at the club: “Natasha, perform at the Russian Taekwondo Championship.” It’s like kickboxing, but you mainly fight with your legs.” “Okay,” I agreed. I didn’t know taekwondo tactics,” she recalls. - But one boxer taught me to look at my opponent in such a way before the start of a fight that it doesn’t seem like much. He said: “Words are carried away by the wind, and the look inspires fear. You go out and look at your rival as an enemy of the people. If she looks away, it means she got scared and lost the fight before it started.” This is the trick I used. And she beat the champion from St. Petersburg.” Natalya won one of her biggest victories over herself when she returned to the sport after the birth of her son. — Indeed, my experience with television was limited to various scientific interviews or popular science programs. But this project provides an opportunity to reach a mass audience and talk about what modern psychology known about the brain. I found the idea of interpreting the participants' performances in terms of how their brains work interesting. After all, many unusual abilities of a particular person can be explained by the peculiarities of his brain. Almost everything that happens in our project has a natural scientific explanation. On the other hand, I was also interested because it was such a personal challenge: to explain online everything that was happening on stage. For me, of course, this is very unusual and interesting. I was worried about what would come of it all. And I’m still afraid to look at myself on the screen.
— What was the most difficult thing about this show?
— To be honest, keep the line between scientific and popular when explaining this or that phenomenon. The organizers asked to speak briefly and clearly. But not all scientific terms may be known to a wide audience. And at the same time you run into certain internal frameworks, because not every phenomenon can be explained in simple language. Sometimes Alexander Gurevich and I ( host of the program “Amazing People”. — Approx. auto) talked after recording the numbers, during technical rearrangements. I told him more than I said during the recording. And in response I heard: “Why didn’t you say this on air? This is quite interesting! But I was given a strict format for a short comment. “So far we have not encountered anything that could not be explained scientifically one way or another. True, there was one controversial number. I reared up and said that this was impossible. My colleagues and I agreed that something was wrong there. The number was really provocative.
Memory can be trained and greatly developed through special activities. This is especially recommended for older people, when after 50 it begins to deteriorate.
- What is this number?
— A man with a black thick bag on his head was driving a car.
- So he didn’t see anything at all?
- Yes. He had seen a map of the area before. But in terms of the nuances - how he behaved, how carefully the car stopped in the right places - I don’t believe that everything went there without some kind of trick. But it made a colossal impression! One of the jury members rode next to him and did not notice any trick...
- Who else surprised you?
“There were people, of course, with phenomenal abilities. For example, Boris Golik. We agreed that we would meet him and even study him in our laboratory. He has a phenomenal working memory, and we are studying it in our research center. There are actually very few people who can play music “backwards” or pronounce words and phrases in familiar and unfamiliar languages. Because most of us have very limited working memory capacity. We can remember a lot, but at a given second we can operate with a relatively small amount of information. But Boris simultaneously retains a large amount of information and can manipulate it: memorize texts and immediately turn them around. To an ordinary person This is not possible. I looked for research on this topic. A few months ago, an interesting scientific article was published: a father and daughter with such abilities were discovered in Serbia. And the authors claim that these are genetically unique properties.
Human capabilities
- Who else impressed?
— A wonderful girl, Bella Devyatkina, who at the age of four perfectly knows seven languages: Russian, English, German, French, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic. She also reads them. In principle, anyone can master a fairly large number of languages; there are records up to 40, but not at such a young age. We haven’t contacted her about research yet, and it’s a pity to drag the baby to the laboratory. As I already said, the vast majority of this or that ability can be explained from a scientific point of view. But when you read about such properties of a person in scientific book- this is one thing, but when a living person stands in front of you, capable of remembering seven thousand numbers, you experience some shock. Yes, I know it's possible. But it looks fantastic: thousands of digits after the decimal point of Pi are running on the screen - and a person can name any of the tens of thousands in this volume! At the first moment I was even confused. And then he explained that it was indeed possible, that such results could be achieved with certain trainings.
To the question: “Is what they show us really happening there?” - I answer: everything is really honest.
— That is, everyone, using certain techniques, can repeat this?
- Well, not every ability can be developed, of course. But if you don't have memory problems, then this is really possible. My favorite example: when one journalist Joshua Foer wrote a book about people with hyperdeveloped memories, he interviewed them, and they all claimed that they had the most ordinary ordinary memory. He felt that they were hiding something from him. How is it so: people remember 10,000 numbers and at the same time claim that their memory is no different from normal. The journalist decided to take part in their competition, to see from the inside what methods they use. He started training for 20 minutes a day - he claims - and eventually won the championship, setting a world record. So this is a clear example that everyone can develop their abilities.
— Which ability was easiest for you to explain?
— The ability of a project participant who, knowing the date of your birth, can easily calculate what day of the week you were born on. Any day - no matter when it was: in the last millennium, or two weeks ago - is unmistakably named. This made an indelible impression on everyone. But since I had researched this issue a little before, I understood that it was not very difficult to do. This seems impossible if you just imagine a thick calendar. But there is a certain system according to which you need to do from six to eight mathematical operations with date of birth. Even I could figure this out pretty quickly on a piece of paper, but if you practice well, you can do this incredible trick and on stage. This shocked everyone in the audience, the audience was practically hysterical, and my modest remarks that this could be done, and it was not as difficult as it seemed, did not make any impression.

— There is a common saying that talented person talented in everything. How fair is it?
— Yes, there is such an opinion, but it seems to me that there is no clear evidence for this. Of course, there are also multilateral people. We know geniuses who wrote poetry, painted, and composed music. And there are people who are talented only in one thing.
— But is it still worth developing some of your abilities?
- Research shows that it is not useless. For example, studies of bilinguals - people who speak two languages equally - show that they are better able to control various processes in life and in themselves. This is due to the fact that they have to constantly switch from one language to another, and this requires internal control. They are considered to be more successful. But you need to understand that training affects exactly the function that you are training.
— What would you advise everyone to train first?
- Memory. Big discovery psychology and neuroscience last decade— is that it can be trained and greatly developed with special classes. After 50 years, memory deterioration begins, and with such training you can stop this process. And this is recommended for many older people.
— So, for example, it’s not too late to learn English at the age of 50?
- Yes, it’s definitely not too late. And this idea - that only in childhood can one learn foreign language- it is not true. Can be taught at any age. There are just periods when all this is easier. By the way, at one time the scientific community was shocked by the discovery that it is possible to stop age-related changes through training, not very strenuous.
— Have you discovered any new abilities in yourself during your participation in the “Amazing People” project?
“The colleagues who sat next to me discovered such abilities in themselves. Someone, for example, discovered that he remembers faces and names very easily - no worse than some participants. And I made a very good discovery for myself: that everything in this project is fair. In fact, often people who come across me ask me: “Is what they show us really happening there?” There is always some doubt. But I declare with authority: everything is really honest. And some of the participants really made mistakes, and I was very sorry, because I understood that they were very talented people, but something just went wrong - maybe there wasn’t enough luck...
