Mysterious Lake is one of the main regions in The Long Dark, and the first one available to play in an open sandbox. The region is named after the lake, which is filled by the Carter Hydro Dam. The region is crossed by a railroad that is used primarily in the summer, supporting local logging and lakeside tourism.

How to survive in the game for more than 50 days:

It is better to organize your main camp at a tourist base. Place most of the things you find there.

Periodically collect wood from around the fire camp. Also, try to collect a lot of matches.

Find a bow and arrow (or craft one). Also pick up all the released arrows and repair them.

To hunt rabbits use traps, deer and wolves use a bow and arrow, and to catch a bear you will need a hunting rifle. But be careful, as the clubfoot can kill you with one hit.

Remove skins from animals, dry them, and then craft warm clothes from them.

Fish on the lake in the afternoon, wearing warm clothes.

Every few days, light the stove to prepare supplies of fish and meat, and store water. Meat should be stored outside, near the camp.

If you are going on a trip to another location, then try to either do it in one day, or take with you a supply of water and food to spend the night.

Ideal for beginners. A balanced amount of uninhabited areas and man-made structures, resources and wild life. It leads to the Coastal Highway and Otradnaya Valley.

Coastal Highway Map

For intermediate players. A weather-ravaged coastline with many structures and resources. Beware of wild animals. Goes to Mysterious Lake, Otradnaya Valley and Despair Point.

Otradnaya Dolina Map

For experienced players. A challenging area in mountainous, uninhabited terrain, with few structures remaining from the hardy settlers. Accesses Mystery Lake, Coastal Highway and Wolf Mountain.

Desolation Zone Map

For intermediate players. Several key structures, many hostile animals and harsh weather conditions beset the remains of a once thriving whaling industry. Opens to Coastal Highway

Wolf Mountain Map

For experienced players. A remote alpine area with few facilities or resources. A true test of survival skills. It goes out to the Otradnaya Valley.

Lonely Marsh Map

New location added in version 386.

For experienced players. Cold open marshy area. cut in half by a railroad. Thin ice and constantly blowing winds make this place too dangerous. Near the Mysterious Lake.

Milton Map

The location is a multi-level area with various types relief: there is a river, many reservoirs different sizes, rocks, mountain paths and flat areas.

Broken Railroad Map

The only exit leads to the Lonely Marsh.

A relatively small area (slightly larger than transitional locations), limited by a deep gorge and a ridge of rocks. Train tracks run along the edge of the location.
In the center of the location there is a small lake on which timothy grass grows. All types of land animals are found around the lake.

Silent River Valley Map

Available for players in survival mode starting from version 1.33.

Quiet River Valley is a multi-layered region that connects to Mountain Town, extending some of the same complex terrain that covers Milton. The new region is full of waterfalls, rivers, streams and many rocky areas, but does not contain man-made shelters. This is a very challenging wilderness.

Wolf Mountain is a location that became available to players in the Sandbox mode The Long Dark starting December 16, 2015. The peculiarity of this location is the presence of the consequences of a geomagnetic storm, which became the starting point for the development of the plot, which at the time of writing this article has not yet been introduced into the game. At the location there is a transition to Otradnaya Valley.

At this location, you will immediately encounter the results of a plane crash: broken tree tops, branches scattered everywhere, traces in the snow left by plane parts.

Various debris is scattered throughout the location; loot as such cannot be collected from the debris. The whole value of these sublocations lies in the fact that when each of them is discovered, the percentage of the explored space of the game increases and a corresponding entry is made in the Journal. If you carefully study the list of wreckage, you will notice that the nose of the aircraft is missing at this location. Perhaps it will appear in future updates.

The easiest pieces to find when exploring the location will be pieces of the landing gear, wings, and containers with supplies that were transported on the plane. At the top of the mountain range you can find the tail section of the plane. It will also be interesting to find the only building on the location - this is the Climber's Hut. You can get to it by following the path to Crystal Lake, on the shore of which this lonely house stands.

Location features

When you come to a location for the first time, thoughts immediately appear in your head: “Something important and terrible happened here.” Wolf Mountain is the very connecting thread between the silent world in which the hero finds himself and the civilization where the hero comes from.

Literally every cave, every clearing and grove shows with its entire appearance that someone was here before you. The remains of fires, frozen corpses of people and pages of diaries only confirm these feelings. Climbing the mountain higher and higher, the feeling that everything is about to fall into place begins to grow, putting pressure on the consciousness, rushing forward and upward.

With each cargo container you find, your appetite will only increase: the total weight of things (food, clothing, equipment, materials, weapons) from all containers can easily reach one hundred kilograms. In any case, the hero will not be able to carry it all at once.

The closer the hero gets to the top, the more difficult it becomes to survive. The abundance of deer and rabbits, which in the first days only made us happy, soon begins to only frighten us, because man is not the only predator in these forests. The fear of meeting a wolf or a bear makes you flinch at every rustle and avoid the seemingly safe clearing with deer.

In two weeks, the hero has a full backpack, which is enough to turn around and run from this damned mountain along the beaten path to the nearest warm house, and from there - walk without looking back, forgetting about the horror that he experienced during this time. However, the tail of the plane looms around the bend, and now my hands hurt again from the last climb up the cable.

There is a snowstorm all around, my leg hurts in the place where it was dislocated a couple of days ago, but right hand the torch and nothing else can prevent you from achieving your goal.

The map is extremely difficult for beginners.
The location presents almost all the things that can be found in the game.
All good clothes, weapons and equipment are located in hard-to-reach places (on tiers of mountains, in locked containers).
There is only one building at the location - the Climber's Hut. Not far from it there is a small fishing house.
There is virtually no scrap metal or sewing kits in the location (although the latter can, with some probability, be found in cargo containers).

Winding river map

Gorge Map

Long location with harmless animals. Berries and mushrooms grow here. It is also a transitional location. Look map of the gorge in The Long Dark maybe a little lower.

Desolation Zone Map

The location is intended more for intermediate level players. It will be quite difficult for beginners here. In the Desolation Zone, you will encounter a fair amount of aggressive animals, and you will also likely encounter harsh weather. There are also several buildings in the desolation zone. Lonely Marsh Map

According to the players, this is one of the most difficult locations. The area is surrounded on all sides by mountains, strong winds they blow almost constantly here, and the ubiquitous swamp with thin ice makes survival even more difficult.
