The end of the spinning rod broke. Do-it-yourself spinning rod repair, possible in some cases

Breakage of spinning rod parts is quite common. And most often it is not the result of a careless attitude towards gear, because for an avid fisherman, gear is the most expensive. Even during transportation, trouble can happen - it is best to have a special hard case for the gear.

And how many fishing rods break when you have to make your way through the thickets on the shore! Especially during active fish biting. There are many techniques that will help you deal with a breakdown yourself, right on the shore of a reservoir.

Any piece of fishing equipment can break. Having noticed a defect, you do not need to immediately undertake repairs. Repairing a breakdown is not so easy. Carefully inspect the spinning rod from all sides, look for the cause of the malfunction and solve the problem.

The rod broke. How to improve the situation?

Most often, a spinning rod breaks. Don't rush to throw away the tackle. Use your wits and fix the damage. Of course, it will take time, but repairing the spinning rod is worth it.

Let's start to act:

Attention! Of course, the rod will become a little shorter, and its test will also change, but this will not change the catchability of the tackle.

Repair of access ring

Another common type of failure relates to skip rings. Avid fishermen never go to a pond without tools and spare parts for a spinning rod, so they always have a spare ring in their bag.

If you don’t have a replacement with you, then the defective ring is simply removed. The tackle will not lose its fishing properties due to this.

Possible actions in case of a broken knee

A knee injury is especially problematic for fishermen. Spinning is quite an expensive pleasure, especially if it is branded. It’s a shame to throw it away, and it’s not practical.

You can contact a repair company and find out if it is possible to purchase an analogue of the broken element. Many companies that value their reputation never refuse such a request.

Another option is to contact a specialist who repairs spinning rods. But this is the case when the breakdown is noticed during preparation for fishing.

What if everything happened at the most inopportune moment, during fishing? Try to be smart and fix the tackle yourself.

  1. Using a sharp knife, you need to cut off the area where the breakage occurred. We do this carefully so as not to damage the other part of the rod.
  2. We find suitable fasteners so that they can be used to connect two adjacent elbows, having previously cleaned the joint with sandpaper. Lubricate the available material for joining with Moment glue.
  3. We wrap the formed knots on top with electrical tape or adhesive tape.
  4. If there is a copper tube of appropriate parameters, then it can be used as a coupling.

If the breakdown relates to the lower, thick knee, and the upper one is not damaged, you can change the profile of the spinning rod. The top leg can be a great fishing tool when fishing vertically from a boat.

To do this, you need to dismantle the lower ring on the knee and attach some kind of rod to it, wrapping the latter with any fastener: electrical tape, plaster.

Despite the fact that the formation will change, you can still fish.

What should a fisherman always have?

If the spinning reel breaks down, then you will have to forget about fishing and return home with nothing. But this should not be done, since in many cases you can fix the breakdown of an important element of fishing equipment yourself. But only if the damage is minor.

Important. A real fisherman, going to a pond, never leaves without taking everything necessary to eliminate possible malfunctions.

This also applies to repair kits for fishing gear. It is useful to stock up on such accessories that can be purchased at any store.

How to repair a spinning rod with your own hands without going to specialized workshops? This question is asked by many fishing enthusiasts, since not all localities have such specialists, and the breakdowns themselves are minor, so you don’t want to spend extra money.

No one, even a seasoned fisherman, not to mention beginners, is immune from troubles while fishing. Perhaps the saddest thing that can happen on the shore is a rod breakage. Don't despair, any problem can be fixed. And if it is small, then it is quite possible to carry out the repair yourself at home.

When do spinning rod breakdowns occur?

Some fishermen, in particular beginners, tend to have a careless attitude towards gear. They do not think about the strength of materials and their durability, so they can overload the spinning rod or create uncharacteristic loads on it, which will lead to breakdown.

The most common situations that lead to questions about how to fix a broken spinning rod are:

  • Accidental impact with the side of the boat. A crack may appear in the blank, and at the next critical load the rod breaks.
  • Using lures that weigh more than the rod allows. As a result, the overloaded form will “fold” during a power cast. What is a spinning test?
  • When assembling and disassembling, some spinning anglers carelessly lean the fishing rod against the car door or lay it on the ground. The form may be accidentally stepped on or broken by closing the door.
  • Carrying the assembled spinning rod tip first. It can be accidentally “stuck” into the ground or into a tree trunk. After this, the rod tip usually breaks.

What minor breakdowns can you repair yourself?

How to fix a spinning rod with your own hands? Naturally, not every problem can be fixed at home. In case of serious damage, the rod must be given to skilled rodbuilders who specialize in repairing “rods” and assembling new ones. There are situations when nothing can help a fishing rod that has become inoperative and will have to be thrown away.

How to repair a broken spinning rod depends on the type of breakdown. Malfunctions that any angler can fix are:

  • Breakage of the tip of a spinning rod - breaking of no more than 10–15 cm of the tip.
  • Failure of rings and tulip - chips and scratches on the insert, fracture or deformation of the frame.
  • The cork handle becomes unusable - over time, the cork gets wet, becomes rotten and begins to crumble.

Even a beginner who has experience working with the tool and knowledge of modern materials can restore a fishing rod after these troubles.

This is the biggest problem and the most difficult to fix and keep the rod working. How to repair a spinning rod? The tip must be fused back to the form. This is only possible in rods with a hollow tip. Repairs are made as follows:

  • It is necessary to select a rod that will be installed inside and can connect both parts of the top. It can be a sewing needle, a metal or carbon rod of suitable diameter.
  • Both ends are cleaned of burrs and defects, then degreased with alcohol.
  • Lubricate the inner insert with epoxy glue and install it in the form, connecting the two parts of the upper leg of the rod.
  • Let the glue dry. For reliability, cover the joint with colorless varnish. You can apply a bandage made of strong threads to the former scrap.

It is worth noting that a repaired fishing rod can change its characteristics - action or test. Therefore, it is necessary to test the “stick” before a full trip to the shore of a river or lake.

How to repair a carbon spinning rod that has a solid tip? In this case, you will have to find and buy a new upper bend, since gluing the broken element to the form will not bring any result, and the tip will certainly break even from a small load.

Rod tulips or rings may require replacement due to failure. Most often, scratches and chips form on the inner insert, which lead to damage to the fishing line and cord. This reduces the strength of the equipment and can lead to breakage when throwing the bait forcefully or when landing a large fish.

How to repair a spinning rod by replacing the rings and tulip? This is done according to the following algorithm:

  • We select and buy the necessary set of access rings and a tulip.
  • We remove the old rings by heating their fastening with a candle or lighter.
  • The seats must be cleaned with finishing sandpaper and degreased with alcohol.
  • We install the ring and seat it with epoxy glue. We fix it on top by applying a bandage.
  • After the glue has hardened, cover the place where the ring is placed with colorless varnish.

It is important not to disturb the alignment when installing new rings. This will lead to a decrease in casting distance due to increased friction of the line against the ring inserts. In addition, this can disrupt the structure of the spinning rod and will create critical overloads in the place of the incorrectly fastened ring when landing fish.

How to repair a spinning rod yourself if the cork handle becomes unusable. When the material begins to crumble, you cannot hesitate. You should immediately begin to correct the breakdown so as not to aggravate the situation:

  • Take a wine or champagne cork and finely rub it.
  • Mix the resulting shavings with PVA glue.
  • With the resulting thick mass we cover all defects and chips.
  • After the glue has dried, sand the handle with fine sandpaper.

The handle repaired in this way looks almost like new and is able to last a long time.

How to protect a spinning rod from damage?

There are certain rules for handling a spinning rod so that it lasts a long time and does not break at the wrong time:

  • The assembled fishing rod must be transported in a special hard case that protects it from impacts and breaks. A spinning tube allows you not only to transport your fishing rod, but also to safely store it at home.
  • You cannot carry the rod tip first. To prevent the spinning rod from breaking, it should be held with the tip facing backwards.
  • There is no need to put the fishing rod on the ground, because colleagues may accidentally step on it.
  • You cannot throw a spinning rod in a boat or on the shore so that it does not experience shock loads.
  • Periodically, the “stick” needs to be wiped, especially the internal inserts of the passage rings.
  • You cannot overload the spinning rod, exceeding the lure test.

Finally

Any fisherman should know how to repair a spinning rod with minor breakdowns. This will allow you to quickly return the equipment to working order and save on repairs from specialists. Although, it is better not to relax and always treat the rod with care, following the rules for handling it.

Not always high-quality things survive to their old age. You buy a good, expensive spinning rod, take care of it, cherish it, and then either you accidentally step on it, or someone puts something on it. In both cases the result is the same - an open fracture. A good spinning rod is expensive, and repairs in a store or workshop will be at least half the cost. You can try to cure it yourself.

You will need:

File or sandpaper;
- pliers;
- drill and drill bits;
- old composite graphite fishing rod;
- burner;
- epoxy resin;
- rubber thread;
- paper;
- plastic bag;
- Super glue.

Instructions:
1.
If the breakdown occurs at the very tip of the tulip, try fixing the spinning rod as follows. Straighten out the fracture site on the main rod. Clean with a file or sandpaper, removing the paint coating.

2.
Take the tip with pliers and hold it over the fire for a while. The glue should soften. Free the tulip from the broken section of the rod.

3.
Since the diameter of the new tip is slightly smaller than the new stripped tip, drill it out with a drill of the correct diameter so that it fits snugly. If everything fits well, then apply a layer of epoxy resin to the rod and put on the tulip. Make sure it is parallel to the rest of the guide rings. Coat this area with resin again and carefully wrap it with a special thread (you can buy it at any fishing store). Let the product dry.

4.
If you have broken one of the legs of the rod in the middle, try to repair the spinning rod as follows. Remember, your task is to preserve all the properties of the rod: elasticity, lightness, information content - everything should remain. Cut a piece of the desired size from an old composite graphite fishing rod. Using tweezers, burn the epoxy resin layer. From the remaining material, remove a thin film (graphite fabric 0.2-0.3 mm). Wet it if it breaks.

5.
To make the inner guide, roll up a small piece of tissue paper and insert it inside. Glue the fracture sites with epoxy resin. Let dry.

6.
Please note that the thickness of the graphite fabric layer should be 30-50% thicker than the wall of the rod at the fracture site. Apply layer by layer of resin as needed. Wrap in cellophane and wrap tightly with rubber thread. This will squeeze out all the excess resin.

7.
When everything is dry, remove the elastic band and cellophane. Clean the repair area of the spinning rod with a file to the desired thickness and smooth the edges. Here, for rigidity, install a pass ring. Fix it with superglue and wrap it well with a special thread. Lubricate the surface with epoxy resin, but choose a glue that dries no faster than 40 minutes, otherwise it will not have time to saturate the graphite fabric. In addition, epoxy should not be afraid of water and ultraviolet rays.

Note!!!
One common mistake is to insert tires from spare tips sold in stores into the cavity of a graphite tube. The tire must be applied from the outside, and the rod tube must remain hollow, otherwise the repaired spinning rod will lose some of its properties.

Thank you for your attention, and see you again!

There is probably not a single spinning angler whose spinning rod has not broken at least once. And it doesn’t matter how this happens - while catching fish or simply due to unsuccessful transportation or storage - the result is most often the same, the rod goes to the pantry or, even worse, to the trash bin.

But I advise you not to rush to write off a broken fishing rod, because it is quite easy to repair it at home. In this case, no special tools or skills are required. Of course, it is not always possible after repair to maintain the technical characteristics originally laid down by the manufacturer, such as testing and operation, but in most cases, as a result of repairs, the technical characteristics change within a minimal range.

The blanks of modern spinning rods have a cone-shaped shape that becomes thinner from the handle to the tip. Almost the entire structure is hollow and only at the end can there be a solid glued insert. Therefore, we will consider two different cases of spinning blank failure.

Case one - spinning rod fracture in the thick part of the blank

In case of a breakdown of this kind, repair is carried out using the double bandage method. Let's look at this method step by step.

First, you need to remove all accessories, that is, rings, from the form. This is quite simple to do; you just need to use a hair dryer to heat the place where the ring is attached. When heated, the glue and varnish melt and the ring is easily removed from its seat (see photo 1). On some models, the ring may still be fixed with a wound thread, in which case it will simply have to be cut off with a knife. After removing the ring, the seat should be sanded with sandpaper until smooth.

We take a file and grind the ends at the fracture sites (see photo 2).

We prepare bandage inserts, for which fragments of old spinning rods are well suited, or for this purpose you can specially purchase some folding Chinese rod, costing $2-3. The bandage is carried out from the inside and outside, so we will need two bandage inserts (see photo 3). The thickness of the bandage inserts is selected by eye, taking into account their taper.

In order to gain access to the internal cavity of the thick part of the form, remove the plug in the handle. We insert the inner bandage insert into this cavity. We pull it out at the fracture site to the maximum possible length, but do not be zealous, since the form being repaired may crack (see photo 4).

On the inner bandage insert, use a marker to mark the future joining line (see photo 5) and remove the insert.

From this line we measure approximately 4 cm in both directions and saw off the excess. The length of the internal insert, depending on the location of the banding, should be no more than 8 diameters of the form in the place where the banding occurs, that is, if the diameter of the form at the point of failure is 10 mm, then the length of the internal banding insert should be 80 mm.

We try on the second broken part by putting it on the bandage insert (see photo 6). If everything is put on without effort, and the break line matches perfectly, then we disassemble everything in the reverse order. Lightly sand the bandage insert with sandpaper, spread glue on it and assemble the entire structure as described earlier. To glue parts, you can use any glue for plastic, the main thing is that it is tested. Leave the glued part to dry for a day.

After the glue has dried, we proceed to external bandaging. To do this, we put on a cone-shaped tubular bandage on the thin side of the rod (see photo 7). For the external mounting tube, the following rule exists: its length should be 1 cm greater than the length of the internal bandage insert. To correctly select the diameter and length of the outer bandage tube, you must put the longest tube on the form. After making sure that it completely covers the fracture site, we leave a mark on the rod blank with a marker. We remove the bandage and measure the distance from the mark to the fracture site. If the distance is more than 5 cm, then the resulting difference must be cut off. Now measure 10 cm from the cut point and cut off the excess part.

As a result, we get the necessary tube for the bandage.

We sand the places where the bandage is attached to the forms, spread it with glue and put a bandage tube on it. After which we leave the structure to dry (see photo 8).

After drying, use a file to file the edges of the bandage tube and level the difference by applying glue (see photo 9). In principle, the renovation is complete. Then this place can be sanded, painted in the color of the form and varnished.

Case two - a fracture of the spinning rod in part of the blank with a solid structure

Modern spinning rods have a solid, non-hollow top structure. If the rod is broken in this place, there is only one way out - replacing the glued part with a new one. To do this, we find the place where the solid structure is connected to the hollow part, and disconnect the rod at this place. A new tip can usually be purchased at a store. If you can’t find one exactly like it was, you can try to glue in a similar one, the main thing is that the diameter matches. The gluing area can be additionally bandaged with a very thin mesh, which should be coated with a thin layer of epoxy glue. After this, the place is painted and varnished.

The spinning rod repair methods described above have helped me save more than one fishing rod. Moreover, in some cases I did not even feel any changes in characteristics after the repair. I hope my experience can help you too.

Spinning rods tend to break. Such a nuisance can happen to anyone, regardless of his neatness or carelessness.

Just one day the stars will align in a certain way, and the spinning rod will be broken.

In this case you should not panic and start looking for ways to buy a new spinning rod. Every thing can be repaired. Including spinning.

Do-it-yourself repair of a broken spinning rod

If a breakdown is detected, you should not immediately take action. Do-it-yourself spinning rod repair- it's a serious matter. Therefore, you first need to carefully examine the breakdown and think carefully about what can be done in this particular case. There will definitely be a way out.

Rearranging the tulip

Breakage of the tip at the very base of the tulip easy to fix. You should clean the broken end and move the tulip to a new place.

To free the tulip tube from the broken tip, you need to heat it. Next, estimate the difference in diameter of the tube and the new seat. The difference in this case will not exceed fractions of a millimeter.

Sharpening the inside of the ring with a file, you can equalize the diameters and insert the tulip into a new place, having previously lubricated the joint surfaces with glue. “Moment” or “super cement” is quite suitable for this.

The spinning rod will become shorter by 1.5 cm - 2 cm and its test indicators will slightly increase, but this is not a reason to throw away a thing that can please you with good catches for a long time.

Replacing the pass ring

To replace a broken pass ring, you need to carefully melt the coating and remove the braid. You'll have to buy a new ring. Then wrap the ring with a strong cord, glue the place where it was tied, and apply several turns of electrical tape to be sure.

Before purchasing a new ring, you can use the spinning rod without this broken part.

Knee repair

If one of the spinning rod's legs breaks, you need to, if possible, find out the possibility of purchasing this knee for an inexpensive payment. Some companies provide this type of service.

If this is not possible, then you will have to select a suitable insertion rod to connect the broken parts (photo 1.1). Their ends are cleaned, the rod is lubricated with glue and inserted into the internal cavities (photo 1.2). After this, the fracture site is wrapped with electrical tape or fiberglass with epoxy resin, and after drying the spinning rod is ready for use again (photo 1.3).

Top repair

A broken tip is the worst type of failure, but it is not fatal if do-it-yourself spinning rod repair take it wisely. The most important thing for this is to find the right materials for the internal and external inserts.

Ideal for external coupling can serve as part of a telescopic antenna.

With the internal insert the situation is worse. Not everyone has a broken fishing rod in their house., but you can buy a top from it. At worst - the toughest quivertype for the feeder.

Photo 2.

Photo 2 clearly shows the entire repair process. Photo 2.1 - broken tip. Photo 2.2 - materials for inserts. At the top there is an internal insert, at the bottom there is an external insert. Their length ratio is 1:3.

The internal insert is mounted by entering into the lower part of the tip half its length (photo 2.3). Beforehand, all parts to be repaired are sanded until the varnish is completely removed. Epoxy should be used for gluing.

Glue is applied to the joining place again, and then the joint is hidden under the coupling pushed over it (photo 2.5). At the same time, we must not forget about the alignment of the rings. After drying for a day with a repaired spinning rod you can go fishing again (photo 2.6).

How to fish with a spinning rod? Our article will tell you and show you about this.

In this article you will learn how to catch silver bream using feeder tackle.

Spinning reel repair

It may happen that on the shore while fishing, the reel suddenly refuses to work. If this is a minor breakdown, or rather a malfunction, then DIY spinning reel repair quite feasible.

It’s just that when going fishing, it’s useful to make it a rule to always carry with you a kind of first aid kit to resuscitate a failed reel; this is very practical if some kind of misfortune suddenly happens with your favorite spinning rod.

The kit should include the following items:

  • tube of lubricant;
  • small flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
  • insulating tape;
  • patch;
  • miniature pliers;
  • needle file;
  • emery cloth;
  • two-component glue in a blister;
  • safety pin.

This will save you the frustration of having to stop fishing because of a minor breakdown.

For example, if for some reason, the reel foot is broken and it does not fit into the groove on the spinning rod handle, then it can be wrapped with electrical tape (photo 3.1). For the remaining fishing time, this will be quite enough.

The resulting gap between the lever and the line roller, where the line begins to get stuck, can be eliminated if, after disassembling this unit, file the excess part of the roller head (photo 3.2).

Sometimes, when dropped or unsuccessfully transported, the bow is transformed. It needs to be removed and given the desired shape again. The fitting in place will most likely have to be repeated several times. But to achieve the desired result quite real (photo 3.3).

The kerf created where the bow rotates in the line guide head can be eliminated by filling it with epoxy. But in the future you will need to monitor the behavior of the fishing line. She must skip, without stopping at this place when the bow is triggered to close (photo 3.4).

If the roughness of the foot begins to irritate the skin on the fingers, then to continue fishing comfortably, the barrel of the foot should be wrapped with electrical tape (photo 3.5).

It happens that the fishing line gets caught in the play of the rotor and spool. This problem can also be eliminated without negative consequences. You need to remove the spool and untangle the fishing line wound around the rod. Then put the bobbin in place, and check the fishing line for critical damage (photo 3.6).

If the return spring breaks The line handler arms are replaced with a homemade pin (photo 3.7). It will last until the end of the fishing trip, but in the future it will need to be replaced with a real one.

The gearbox cap, which has disappeared to an unknown location, opens the door for sand to penetrate through the hole. It must be covered with a plaster or tape (photo 3.8).

When the reel starts to spin tightly and jams, then this can be corrected by adding lubricant to the gearbox. To do this, you need to loosen the cover bolts and drip grease into the opened gap (photo 3.9).

Photo 3.

More significant damage to the spinning reel require replacement of parts of a factory-produced mechanism, or repair in specialized workshops.

The ingenuity of Russian fishermen knows no boundaries. It cannot be otherwise - I want to fish. And if something is broken, that means it can be repaired.
