drawn with a pencil in Photoshop?

There are many things you can do using Photoshop. First, let's look at the simplest way, after which a photograph will turn into black and white drawing pencil.

Working with paints

How to make a photo look like it was drawn with paints? Using a special filter developed by Adobe, which is freely available on the Internet - Pixel Bender. In the Ps6 version it is already preinstalled, and in the Russian version it is called “ Oil paint" and is located in the top menu in the "Filter" column.

This effect looks especially good on photographs of some places: ancient buildings, landscapes and still lifes. You can also apply it to photographs of a person, but the result may be ambiguous.

Using this editing method is even easier than the previous one: you simply open the desired photo, then go to the top menu “Filter - Oil paint...”, after which an additional filter window opens, in which you can immediately see the future result by changing the settings. Two main parameters change - brush properties and lighting. The final picture turns out very beautiful, and most importantly, it seems that it was really painted with brushes and paints.

And finally

As mentioned above, there are many options on how to make a photo look like a drawing, how to create a truly memorable drawing using photo processing. You can achieve the effect of a cartoon, caricature, comic book, painting, sketch. The list can be continued as long as your imagination allows. The possibilities in the environment of graphic editors are almost limitless - you just need to not be afraid to learn. Install PhotoShop, start simple, gradually improve your skills, and you will achieve great results!

Lesson materials:

Create a new document ( Ctrl+N) in a programme AdobePhotoshopCS51024 px X 1280 px(color mode RGBresolution 72pix.) Download the texture and place it on our document.

Click the create box "New Adjustment Layer"(New adjustment layer) in the bottom toolbar (Layers panel).

Click the “Create” window again New adjustment layer"(New adjustmentlayer) in the bottom toolbar (Layerspanel), this time select ). To decrease saturation, move the slider to the left as shown in the figure. This will give contrast and brutality to our texture.

In the next step we will load brushes ( Old_paper_brushes_by_Annette29,Seu_Davi and c130_splatter).
Select a brush as shown in the picture:

Create new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and use a brush to apply the new texture to a new layer:

Click the box "Add Layer Style"(Add a layers style) "Shadow" (DropShadow).

As a result, we got a relief texture:

Create a new layer and select the round soft one brush black color (in the brush settings, set opacity(Opacity) 30%.

Using this brush paint on the edges of the layer.

Find a source image of the model, I used this image.
Remove the background using your favorite tool it could be "Feather" (PenTool(P)) , or "Magic wand" (Magic Wand Tool (W)), or Magnetic Lasso (L) or more in a simple way“Filter - Extract” (Filter>Extract) and move the selected image onto our document.

Choose a tool "Eraser" (eraserTool (E)) . In the top settings panel, set the brush to splash as shown in the picture:

Using the eraser, erase the bottom of the girl as shown in the image below:

Click the box "Add Layer Style" (Addalayerstyle) in the bottom toolbar and select "Shadow" (DropShadow).

Add "Inner Shadow"(InnerShadow).

Thanks to the shadow we achieved volumetric image girls:

Create new layer. In tools "Brush" (Brush Tool (B)) Select a flat rectangular brush with black color (set the brush opacity to 30% in the top options bar).

Translator's Notes: This brush is included by default starting from versionPhotoshopSC 5, if you don’t have a flat rectangular brush, then select a similar brush to achieve the effect as shown in the figure below, or you can use the “splatter” brush, which you already used before in our lesson, only now instead of the eraser tool, select the tool brush. Also set the brush opacity to 30%, if the brush strokes are not very drawn, then go over the brush again. For your convenience, before you apply the brush, create a new layer below the girl's layer.

The picture shows how the strokes made with this brush are drawn.

Place this layer below the girl layer.

Click the box "Add Layer Style" (Addalayerstyle) in the bottom toolbar and select "Shadow" (DropShadow).

Now select a soft brush with black color and opacity 50% .

Create a new layer above the girl's layer, hold down the Alt key and left-click between the new layer and the girl's layer to create a clipping mask. Using a brush, paint the areas around the head along the contour, painting over the fragments that remain after removing the background.

Translator's Notes : If you are unable to create a clipping mask, you can simply right-click on the new layer and select "Create Clipping Mask"(Addclippingmask).

Click the create box "New Adjustment Layer"(New adjustment layer) in the bottom toolbar (Layerspanel). Next, select “ Curves"(Curves) and make a small color correction as shown in the picture.

We got the following result:

Click the box again "New Adjustment Layer"(New adjustment layer) in the bottom toolbar (Layers panel) , this time you choose Hue/Saturation).
Drag the slider to the left to decrease "Saturation"(Saturation) And "Brightness"(Lightness) .

We got the following result:

Select the next brush from the set Seu_Dav i, which you downloaded before:

On a new layer, paint some splashes of black.

This is the result we should get:

Click the box "Add Layer Style" (Add a layer style) in the bottom toolbar (Layers panel) and select "Inner Shadow" (InnerShadow) .

Translator's note: It is advisable to draw blots on a new layer and apply the layer style to this layer "Inner Shadow" (InnerShadow). Then we will get the effect as if the blots are already imprinted into our texture. You can also reduce the fill of this layer (Fill) up to 80%.

We got the effect of imprinting into the texture.

Select a soft round brush of black color and opacity (Opacity) 10 %.

Now we will have to draw arbitrary strokes as shown in the following figure:

Set the blending mode for this layer "Soft color"(SoftLight) .

Make a duplicate of this layer to enhance the effect ( Ctrl+J):

Click the box again "New Adjustment Layer"(New adjustment layer) in the bottom toolbar (Layers panel), select "Curves"(Curves) make a small color correction as shown in the picture to increase the contrast.

Today we’ll look at a simple technique for creating a pencil drawing from a photo. The technique is so simple that its implementation took me less time than writing a post. Moreover, the result is almost absolute similarity to the real thing. To get started, open the photo you want to change in Photoshop, and let's get started. This is the photo I chose for this lesson.

Photo preparation

Using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+J) create a copy of the background layer. We will use it as a basis and rename this copy to “Outlines”.

I would like to get an imitation of a drawing made with a simple pencil; we need to deprive our “Outlines” of color. To do this, execute the Desaturate command as shown or use the keyboard shortcuts (Shift+Ctrl+U).

The Grain setting depends on your photo and artistic design, I chose a value of 2% for my work since I work in a small photo of only 1000x667 pixels. Use the “Gaussian” checkbox in the “Distribution” item to evenly distribute the noise that appears in our future drawing. And check the box for “Monochrome” so that the noise is one color.

Create a copy of this layer in the same way as described above and rename it “Canvas” since our drawing will appear on it. You can change the “Canvas” blend mode to darken using the drop-down list in the palette shown below.

Hide the “Canvas” under the mask using the “Hide All” command. Follow the path Main menu Layers – Layer mask – Hide all. The result is a black mask.

The next step is to show the contours of our future creation to imitate a pencil stroke. Go back to the "Outlines" layer and apply the "Edge Glow" filter from the "Filter Gallery" to it.

How less than value width of the edges, the thinner the contours will be, the less brightness of the edges the contours will be less pronounced, softening is responsible for the clarity of the contours, the more softening the smoother stroke lines. For each image you need to select these parameters individually based on its size and number of details.

When this operation is completed, click on the “OK” button. We have received a negative image, we need to invert it to bring it into a “divine” form. Apply the “Invert” command to the “Outlines” layer using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+I). And change the blending mode to Soft Light using the palette list, adjust the opacity between 20 and 25%.

The last step in preparing our photo is creating a background. Create a new layer below the "Outlines" layer. Fill it with white (use the keyboard shortcut Shift+F5 in the “Use” dialog that opens, select Color “White” and press OK). Now that we're done with the preparation, let's move on to creating the drawing.

Creating a drawing from a photo

We will work on the drawing using the “Brush”; select this tool from the program toolbar. In the Tool Options bar, select the Round Curved Fine Brush.

Give the tool the following options.

The higher percentage of “Bristles” you specify, the thinner there will be lines simulating pencil shading

Set the tool's opacity to 40 to 50%. Install White color In the foreground, make the Canvas layer mask active. Work over the mask with a white brush, developing the design. To adjust the brush size as you work, use the ([)increase (]) and decrease keys.

If you make a wrong move, set the foreground color to black and brush over the wrong area, then continue with a white brush. This is the drawing I got from the photo:

That’s all the work is, this technique of creating a drawing looks most attractive when applied to images with a dark, uniform background, it is also suitable for working with landscapes, I think you will find a use for this method and add to your knowledge base on Photoshop
