Rap music. New Russian rap: what to listen to What rap you can listen to

Among the many musical genres and trends, rap music stands out. This trend is rightfully considered popular, because its appearance had nothing to do with commerce.

The Origins of Rap

In Africa, for many centuries there has been a tradition of talking about various news and events, accompanying the speech by playing drums. At the same time, important information was diluted with various jokes, prayers, and anecdotes. Gradually, some things began to change. Rhythmic lyrics spoken to music became a way of self-expression for African Americans. Young people composed hits right on the streets, telling them about everything that was happening around them. Sometimes it turned into a kind of competition, a test of the ability not only to pronounce meaningful texts, but also to compose new ones, rhyme and create original and very interesting recordings.

Subsequently, it became so interesting and unusual that rap culture quickly spread throughout the world. Today you can listen to your favorite songs online completely free of charge! No matter how paradoxical it may sound, for all its popularity, Russian rap appeared not so long ago. The history of development goes back a little over 20 years. Rap, heard at small gatherings and private parties, began to quickly spread to the masses. At first, these were hesitant attempts by novice musicians to combine primitive freestyle with various musical styles. Gradually something very interesting and unusual began to emerge. Despite the borrowed presentation, attributes, rhythm and style of syllable, the music has its own originality and, most importantly, reflects the realities of modern life. Perhaps this is the main secret of the popularity of modern Russian rap performers. Music is filled with a special meaning, it introduces the listener to life situations and stories, conveys a range of feelings and experiences, and establishes some kind of invisible connection between the performer and the audience of fans. From the work of rap artists of the first half of the 1990s, we can highlight only a few of the most prominent representatives, whose tracks and albums are worth listening to for any fan of Russian rap.

The first Russian hip-hop festival - REPPIK - was first organized in 1991.

Mr. Small. One of the first rap projects, the main hit of which “I will die young” appeared on radio stations and central television channels in 1992. The album of the same name, which sold ten thousand copies, was re-released several times and is included in the list of “Main Albums of Russian Rap”.

Bad Balance. An international Soviet-Russian hip-hop group, which at one time included Mikhey and Legalize, who later made solo careers. The leader of the group to this day is Vlad Valov, also known as Master SheFF. The group’s most popular and critically acclaimed release is the 3rd studio album “Purely PRO”.

The first beef in Russian rap was in English. Back in 1994, MC Hassan made unflattering comments about the bands Bust A.S in the intro! and Bad Balance. Beef (eng. beef - meat) - enmity between representatives of hip-hop culture.

"True rap" of the second half of the 90s

In the second half of the 1990s, groups and performers whose work belongs to the so-called “true rap” came to the fore.

"Caste". A cult rap group from Rostov-on-Don, one of the first groups in whose work social protest motives appeared. The group’s most successful release was the album “Louder than Water, Above the Grass,” released in 2002, which is considered the best-selling album in the entire history of Russian rap. In addition, it is worth listening to the albums of the “United Caste”, which includes the groups “Grani”, “Sand People” and several free MCs.

"Dolphin". In the world of Russian hip-hop, “Dolphin” is certainly one of the strongest poets. The most commercially successful release of “Dolphin” was the 2004 disc “Star”, but all other albums are also worthy of attention.

"SOUTH" The name of the group stands for "Southern Thugs." SOUTH. this is certainly one of the most important Russian rap teams at the turn of the 1990-2000s, the kings who made high-quality rap music. All albums and tracks of this group are a must-listen for true fans of Russian rap.

"Ellipsis." It is considered one of the most famous Russian rap groups, a pioneer of the Russian variety of gangsta rap, the so-called “gop-hip-hop”. As was originally intended when the group was created, its discography consists of three albums - according to the number of dots in the dots.

Idols of our days

With the beginning of the 2000s, rap music began to gain more and more popularity, new idols, groups and individual rap artists began to appear like mushrooms after a good rain. “True rap” as the main direction of Russian rap has faded into the background, giving way to commercial pop and “gop-hip-hop”.

DeCl. Among fans of Russian rap, DeTsl is considered a cult figure; his first album “Who? You" sold more than 1 million copies. The creativity of this charismatic character certainly deserves attention.

Basta. Noggano. N1nt3nd0. All three pseudonyms belong to one of the most talented figures in Russian rap, Vasily Vakulenko, who at one time came out from under the wing of Caste. His albums have received many different prizes, prizes and awards; in each of them, fans of Russian rap will find many excellent tracks.

"AK-47". A rap group from the Sverdlovsk region, a bright representative of that very “hop-hip-hop”, is very popular in a certain environment. It is also famous for its logo, which can often be seen on people’s clothes and cars with a characteristic appearance.

Triagrutrica (THC). A group from Chelyabinsk that makes high-quality rap, under the motto “Homemade rap is the most effective.” She gained wide popularity after the release of the album “Evening Chelyabinsk”, the rest of the albums consolidated their success, the rap is really high quality.

In addition, it is worth noting such noteworthy representatives of the genre as: NTL, Pra killa "gramm, "63 region", "Godfamily", "Assai", "Mezza", "Smoke Screen", Nonamerz, UmBriaco.

Pike

Pike "UE"

"DJ. Beatmaker. Street dancer. Shaker shaker. Partymaker,” this mantra automatically turns on in your head when you mention the rapper Pika. And she accurately describes everything he does. A breakdancer from Rostov-on-Don, Pika accompanied his more titled countryman Basta on tour for several years as a backing MC, until he suddenly left the Gazgolder label - quietly, without scandal, but without explanation: discuss details doesn’t want to, because “the topic is personal.”

Having exchanged stability for the uncertainty of a solo career, Pika released several albums, on the one hand, nodding towards the Rostov school of rap (early “Casta”, “Sand People”), on the other hand, turning to New York psychedelia Flatbush Zombies and A$ for inspiration AP Mob. But success came only with the third solo release “A L F V” (distorted “Alpha”), at the very end of which a viral hit lurked. It was this two-minute hip-house track of the 90s a la Technotronic that was destined to blow up the Internet this year - a “dashing spontaneous hit” (the author of the definition is Oksimiron) flew across the pages of VKontakte, sounded at school discos and even made it to the show "Dancing" on TNT. For Pika himself, such success came as a surprise, but he did not disown his hit, but, on the contrary, plunged headlong into dance music - he released an EDM track with the chorus “She dances on my ue” and announced an EP of six “happy hardcore tracks".

Jah Khalib

Jah Khalib "ZNNKN"

“If anything, I am Bach” is the name of the album released in September by an artist named Bakhtiyar Mamedov, aka Jah Khalib. You can make fun of the name as much as you like, but this minimal boundary between the listener and the performer is in many ways what made Jah Khalib the hero of the VKontakte public pages. A jazz saxophonist from Almaty, who began working in the studio at the age of 13, he writes songs where he sings: “You are like the whole universe,” “I will hug you against the background of a scarlet sunset, my Leila, gentle Leila.” These songs, which sound like a very light (and very Russian) version of Drake, end up in playlists on girls’ pages on VKontakte, and the group Jah Khalib on this social network has almost half a million people. He is equally eagerly awaited in both Chisinau and Yekaterinburg. “I make music for ordinary people to listen to,” he says in an interview, and this is the very case when what is desired is equal to what is actually realized.

ATL "Bees"

Calling him a new artist is a bit of a stretch: ATL first appeared on the radar back in 2008 as part of the now defunct Cheboksary group Aztecs (one of the ex-members of Aztecs now assists ATL on stage, the other writes music). But what was then and now is heaven and earth.

The title of last year's breakthrough ATL album Marabou clearly references Irvine Welsh's book, and throughout the record you'll also find title quotes from works by Daniel Keyes and Hunter Thompson. The album itself is a ten-track rap opera on the theme of post-apocalypse. Don't be so quick to think of ATL as some kind of geeky, puny smartass; his music is primarily dance music. His concerts look like this: a straight barrel is beating, two broad-shouldered figures (both in black) are shamanizing on stage, squeezing all the juice out of the people in the hall. In February, when he and his team performed in Moscow, the small Brooklyn club was besieged by people wanting to get there - a queue lined up, as if for a Serov exhibition taking place at the same time. Now Basta expresses respect to him and invites him to the festival of his label “Gazgolder”, and in October ATL leaves for a tour scheduled almost until the New Year.

Alphavite

Alphavite "Tit"

The popular rap battle "Versus" has a junior league; It’s called Fresh Blood, and its motto is: “From noname to star.” Alphavite became its first winner - and this rule applied completely to him. The 22-year-old tall bearded man from Almaty systematically, round after round, crushed his opponents and charmed the judges. At other times, he took advantage by making cruel jokes at the expense of his opponent. In others, he could not be afraid to tell a self-exposing story about how he, drunk, said something rude to another Russian rapper, and he beat him. Thirdly, he destroyed the enemy with his reading, flow and charisma.

Following the victory at Versus, Alphavite won another large-scale contest, Beats & Vibes, aired on MTV. After which he announced that he would temporarily give up battle rap and focus on songwriting. According to the conditions of victory, he was entitled to shoot a professional video. This is how the video “Tit” appeared - the song, although a little reminiscent of the work of Max Korzh, gives an excellent idea of the macho, alpha-male rap of Alphavite.

MiyaGi & Endgame

MiyaGi & Endgame "Hajime"

The members of the duet from North Ossetia are Azamat Kudzaev and Soslan Burnatsev. Until some time, being deep in the underground, they were, as they say, looking for themselves. On YouTube you can find their old clips, mostly sad love songs, what is usually called in a negative sense “a Russian rapper with a piano.” Everything changed when the album "Hajime Pt 1" was released last summer. A mixture of minor melodious hip-hop and raggamuffin, simple truths in the spirit of “I shake the paw of the one who is in smithereens / For the family, for our own, one love” listeners loved so much that the simple video for the title song exceeded a million views, and on At the very first concert there was a soldier out in a club with a thousand capacity. Just the other day, the second part of “Hajime” was released: there the duo still does not pay attention to the trends and revolutions taking place in hip-hop, captivating the listener with some of their special sincerity.

Rickey F

Rickey's performance at Versus Fresh Blood, the already legendary cancer round begins at around 21.15

Rickey F is another battle star who is gradually outgrowing the boundaries of YouTube fame. What brought him popularity was the so-called cancer round on Versus: for 10 minutes, the rapper imagined that his opponent had brain cancer and joked evilly about it. For example, like this: “If there was less water in your head, cancer would not have settled there.” Or like this: “When your boyfriend asks you to get into a doggy position, you stick your head out.” As a result, it was not he who won the Fresh Blood league, but it was Rickey F who received the most important thing from the battle - they began to recognize him on the streets.

He doesn’t have a single release yet, and in general there are not many songs - there are about a dozen of them on VKontakte (and if you thought that all of his rap is a story about giggling, then no: for Rickey F it is in the order of things to write tracks based on Lovecraft books). There is no big hit, no beautiful video, no song from which you can make memes and “sow” it on VKontakte. Nevertheless, their joint tour with Alphavite will start this fall, which will cover more than 20 cities. There is no doubt - after each concert there will be a queue of people wanting to take a photo with the Versus star.

"Mushrooms"

Mushrooms "Cops"

There won’t be a detailed conversation about the group “Mushrooms”, because at the moment they only have two videos. The first, “Intro,” is an almost frame-by-frame retelling

“99 Problems” by Jay Z, only in the scenery of a Kyiv residential area. After its release, the YouTube counter spun wildly - synchronously with the counter of the participants of the “Mushrooms” public on VKontakte. The “Cops” video, released in September, repeated its success, collecting two million views in a couple of weeks.

Nevertheless, it is known that “Mushrooms” was started by a Kiev show business figure and former break dancer Yuri Bardash, the driving force behind the Kruzheva label responsible for the relaunch of the Quest Pistols project and the husband of the singer Luna. Together with him are two Kyiv rappers, 4atty and Symptom NZHN - they did not appear yesterday, but they could not boast of any decisive successes before “Mushrooms”. The video blogger Kyivstoner can be considered an equally important member of the group, creating absurdist sketches at the beginning of each video. In the fall, the group will give their first concert in Moscow - according to available information, in a fairly spacious club. There is every reason to assume that “Mushrooms” will no longer do this with just two songs.

Boulevard Depot

Pharaoh & Boulevard Depo "5 minutes ago"

He has a song about how the hero got inside a JPEG file and got stuck there. There is a song with the chorus “I’m one step ahead, my name is Topsky Pavel”; To figure out who this same Pavel Topsky is, you’ll have to do a little googling. A prominent participant in the YungRussia movement (the name, by the way, is also his authorship), who grew up in Ufa, but is now based in St. Petersburg, is such an Oberiut poet of his time, not striving to make his songs understandable to everyone, but this only benefits in originality. Last winter, his video with Pharaoh, “Champagne Squirt,” appeared on YouTube. After a couple of months, lines about “tenth grade, she smokes for the first time” and “squirt in the face, champagne squirt in the face” wandered from public to public. This year, another clip of the same tandem “5 minutes ago” is conquering the Internet - and again there is something like hysteria on social networks.
