The translator took a photo and it was translated. The best photo translators online

Good day everyone!

Probably, almost each of us has come across photographs, pictures, and simply seen posters somewhere in a foreign language. And almost always, I would like to quickly translate and find out what is written there...

In general, in this case you can go in three ways:

  1. open one and manually enter the desired text (this option is long, painful and dreary);
  2. use programs for translating pictures into text (for example, ABBYY Fine Reader), and then copy the resulting text into a translator and find out the result;
  3. use special applications and services that allow you to perform the operation of translating text from a picture (or photo) automatically (i.e., do what is described in paragraph 2 independently, without your participation).

Actually, this article will be about the third option. I note that in the article I will consider photo translators for both PCs and smartphones.

Note: I’ll immediately note that the better the quality of the source photo (picture), the better the quality of the recognized text from it, and the translation itself will be.

Online services (for PC)

Yandex translate

An excellent translation service from one language to another (it already supports more than 95 languages!). As for recognizing text in a picture, the Yandex service does an excellent job of this task (in no way inferior to the famous Fine Reader program).

In my example, I used a photo of a book page (in English). The steps for translation are quite simple:

  1. follow the link given above;
  2. upload your picture with foreign text;
  3. specify the language (usually the service determines it automatically. In my case, “Anglican -> Russian”);
  4. then just click on the “Open in Translator” link (see screenshot below).

Left: the original text that was in the photo is presented, right is its translation. Of course, machine translation requires some work: you can copy the finished text and transfer it to Word for further development (I note that the quality of the translation also depends on the subject of the text. And since I took fiction, it is not translated very well).

Free Online OCR

Supports formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, PDF, DjVu

Unlike Yandex, this service is less picky - it even supports the DjVu format (and it has quite a lot of English books, magazines, and articles).

In addition, I note that some photos (where rare fonts are used) are recognized by the service much better! And one more thing: the service allows you to use two translation options: using Google technology and using Microsoft Translator. So, if there are pictures or photos that Yandex translator couldn’t handle, try this service!

How to use it:

  1. go to the main page of the site (the address is indicated just above);
  2. select the file you want to recognize;
  3. indicate two languages: one, which is in the photo (English, for example); the second - which one you want to translate into (Russian).
  4. press the "Upload + OCR" button (that is, upload and recognize the text on the photo).

After some time (depending on the size of the downloaded file), you will see the resulting text and several links above: you can select Google translator, Bing, or simply download the resulting text.

By choosing Bing, I received a translation of my text (the quality is not high, because the work is fiction).

Smartphone applications (Android)

Google Translate

A very decent application for a smartphone that allows you to translate text into 103 languages (I note that it supports 59 languages offline - i.e. no Internet required!)!

The application has a built-in camera translation function in real time: i.e. Just point your phone camera at the English text - and you will see the text in Russian in the translator window! However, there is also a classic work in the arsenal: this is when a picture is photographed in a foreign language, and then the text is processed and output in Russian (for example).

It's quite simple to use:

  1. launch the application and select two languages: the source (which is in the picture) and your native language into which you want to translate;
  2. then click on the “camera” icon (see screenshot below, arrow No. 1);
  3. then you need to point the camera at the foreign text (note that the application immediately displays the translation). However, if the text is long, I recommend taking a photo of it (see screenshot below, arrow No. 2).

Then click on the “Select All” button and click on the blue arrow. Next you will see your translation of the text. See screenshots below.

In general, everything is done very high quality and convenient. As a rule, almost everyone carries a phone with them, which means you can always quickly translate a poster or photo. I recommend you check it out!

ABBYY Lingvo

Several languages are available for free use: Russian, English, German, French, Spanish.

This smartphone application allows you to translate many sentences, phrases and words without access to the Internet. In total, the application supports three types of translation:

  • classic manual input: when you type the desired text yourself;
  • from an already taken screenshot, picture or photograph;
  • and using your phone camera (in 1 click!).

In general, a good assistant for travel, study and work. You can quickly translate a small text, a postcard, a newspaper article, correspondence with a colleague/friend, etc.

Peculiarities:

  1. "live translation": point to a word from the displayed text on the screen - immediately get its translation;
  2. photo translation: select a screenshot or photo and get a translation of the words captured on it;
  3. 11 dictionaries are available for download to anyone (free of charge!);
  4. convenient hints when searching for words;
  5. the dictionary contains not only the translation of the word, but also its transcription, grammatical information about it, examples of use (you can also listen to it - very useful for those who learn a foreign language);
  6. a history of words that you requested earlier is kept (it’s convenient to learn words by rechecking your memory from time to time!).

If you have anything to add, thanks in advance!

That's all, good luck everyone!

In the modern world, knowledge of one language is no longer enough - globalization, social networks and instant messengers allow you to communicate with friends in any country. And it doesn’t matter if your knowledge of a foreign language is still at an insufficient level, online services will help you grasp the general meaning. Moreover, they now have a function with which you can even translate from English into Russian using photographs. Let's look at the most popular resources for this:

  • Yandex Translator;
  • Google Translate;
  • Free Online OCR.

Yandex Translator from English to Russian based on photo

Let's start with a domestic service for translating text from English into Russian from photographs online. Yandex Translator in photo mode is available at https://translate.yandex.by/ocr .

Previously, the service was able to work exclusively with text content written by the user or taken from the site at a specified address, but now it also supports text recognition from an uploaded image. At the same time, translating photos into text online is completely free, you don’t even need registration.

In the upload field, you can drag the image onto the page from a folder open in the OS, or click on the “Select file” link and specify the exact path to the file.

Yandex online photo translation works with both regular photos and screenshots. For example, you can “feed” him a screenshot of a page from an English-language resource.

The service has one drawback: by default, it does not show the entire processed file at once. To view the translation from English. in Russian you need to click on the desired area of the photo. The Russian version for this fragment will be displayed.

To go to the text version of the translator, click on the corresponding link in the upper right corner. It is very convenient if you need to copy finished text after recognition from a photo online. There are also buttons for assessing the quality of the translation (like/dislike on the right) and a tool for suggesting your own options (pencil).

You can switch the translation of text from English into Russian using a photograph to the mode of working with individual words.

It’s convenient to work this way if you already understand the general message, but want to clarify certain points.

The third mode is translation along lines (strings). The system sometimes selects not the entire line, leaving the last characters unprocessed.

The plus and minus signs in the upper left corner or the scroll wheel on the mouse are responsible for scaling the image. And to move the image when enlarging, you need to drag it with the left button while holding down Ctrl.

To finish processing the current file and upload a new one, use the cross icon on the right.

In general, the photo translator from English to Russian online leaves a very pleasant impression, and not only because it works for free. Many languages are supported, although some are in beta status.

Sentences in Russian are similar to natural language and can often be used without editing.

Google photo translator

An alternative option is an online translator from English into Russian using a photo from your phone in the Google application ( http://bit.ly/2CWvhQy ).

At the same time, Google promises effective online photo translation from 37 languages, which is comparable to the capabilities of Yandex. The reality turns out to be not so rosy, but let's not rush.

After installing the program, you will need to specify settings for text recognition, including with photos. It is also immediately suggested to download the offline module (judging by the reviews, it is unstable, so you should prepare for constant connections to the service).

Please note that the main language is the one from which you need to translate, and not the language of the final result.

The main menu will then open.

You can go to the settings, but they are extremely meager.

Internet traffic options include installing an offline package, speech synthesis capabilities, and camera settings. By default, the service will use your photos to improve the experience. If you don’t want to waste extra traffic, it’s better to disable sending.

The main window contains all the tools, including a photo translator from English to Russian - it is hidden behind an icon labeled “Camera”.

When activated, you will need to allow access to shooting.

If you haven't set up sending pictures to Google, the program will ask you about them.

For on-the-fly recognition, you must download the offline part. But if the text floats due to autofocus, the result will be sad.

Please note that only the selected part of the frame is translated.

To go to a full-fledged English-Russian photo translator, you need to take a photo (big red button). After this, the application will ask you to select the text. You can select everything using the button below.

The system will show the result. You can use the copy button if you go to the very bottom of the text.

To use a previously taken photo, in camera mode, click on the import icon (to the left of the red button). The first time, the application will request access to the data.

The photo selection will then be displayed. By default, recent files are shown.

If you open the menu at the top left, you can import a photo from your gallery, downloads folder, Google Drive, etc.

Otherwise the translation process is exactly the same.

Free Online OCR service for translation from pictures

A popular translator of pictures from English into Russian is available at https://www.newocr.com/ . It supports different formats and translation languages.

Select the file, specify the languages to be recognized and use “Upload + OCR” to upload. After processing, you can adjust the text orientation parameters at the top and enable column splitting.

The area for translation and the recognized text are shown below.

The service does not have its own translator, but clicking the button will automatically send the text to Google Translator.

Or you can click on "Bing Translator" to use Microsoft's service.

The service is convenient with orientation settings and access to two translation systems.

Users are faced with the need to translate text from photos online. Situations can be different: there is text in a photograph that needs to be extracted from the image and translated into another language, there is an image of a document in a foreign language, text from the picture needs to be translated, etc.

You can use text recognition programs that use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology to extract text from images. Then, the text extracted from their photo can be translated using a translator. If the original image is of good quality, then in most cases free online text recognition services will do.

In this case, the entire operation takes place in two stages: first, text recognition occurs in a program or online service, and then the text is translated using an online translator or an application installed on the computer. You can, of course, copy text from a photo manually, but this is not always justified.

Is there a way to combine two technologies in one place: immediately recognize and transfer a test from a photo online? Unlike mobile apps, there is little choice for desktop users. But, nevertheless, I found two options for how to translate text from an image online in one place, without the help of programs and other services.

An online photo translator will recognize the text in the image and then translate it into the desired language.

When translating from images online, pay attention to some points:

the quality of text recognition depends on the quality of the original image

In order for the service to open the picture without problems, the image must be saved in a common format (JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, etc.)

if possible, check the extracted text to eliminate recognition errors

the text is translated using machine translation, so the translation may not be perfect

We will use Yandex Translator and the Free Online OCR online service, which has functionality for translation of text extracted from photographs. You can use these services to translate from English into Russian, or use other language pairs of supported languages.

Yandex Translator for translation from pictures

Yandex.Translator integrates OCR optical character recognition technology, with which text is extracted from photographs. Then, using Yandex Translator technologies, the extracted text is translated into the selected language.

Go through the following steps sequentially:

Sign in Yandex translate to the “Pictures” tab.

Select the source language. To do this, click on the name of the language (English is displayed by default). If you don't know what language is in the image, the translator will start auto-detection of the language.

Select the language to translate. By default, the Russian language is selected. To change the language, click on the language name and select another supported language.

Select a file on your computer or drag a picture into the online translator window.

After Yandex Translator recognizes the text from the photo, click “Open in Translator”.

Two fields will open in the translator window: one with text in a foreign language (in this case, English), the other with a translation into Russian (or another supported language).

If the photo was of poor quality, it makes sense to check the recognition quality. Compare the translated text with the original in the picture, correct any errors found.

You can change the translation in Yandex Translator. To do this, turn on the “New translation technology” switch. The translation is carried out simultaneously by a neural network and a statistical model. The algorithm automatically selects the best translation option.

Copy the translated text into a text editor. If necessary, edit the machine translation and correct errors.

Translation from photos online to Free Online OCR

The free online service Free Online OCR is designed to recognize characters from files of supported formats. The service is suitable for translation, since it optionally has capabilities for translating recognized text.

Unlike Yandex Translator, Free Online OCR achieves acceptable recognition quality only on fairly simple images, without the presence of foreign elements in the picture.

Follow these steps:

Enter Free Online OCR.

In the “Select your file” option, click on the “Browse” button, select a file on your computer.

In the “Recognition language(s) (you can select multiple)” option, select the required language from which you want to translate (you can select multiple languages). Click on the field and add the desired language from the list.

Today, all modern smartphones are equipped with fairly high-quality cameras that are capable of not only taking ordinary photographs, but also significantly simplifying other important operations, for example, creating electronic versions of printed documents or quickly translating text from a photo. But in order to do this, you need to install some applications, which will be discussed in today’s article.

How to translate text from a photo on a smartphone and tablet?

Today, the market offers mobile phones and tablet computers on various operating systems, so for convenience, we will consider several options for different platforms.

A program for translating photos on Android smartphones

In the Play Market you can find many applications that allow you to recognize text in a photo, but only a few of them really do their job well. And one of the most popular and convenient applications is Google Translate, which allows you to translate text directly from a photo. To use it, simply download and install it, then launch it and select the mode for photographing the object. The program will independently activate your smartphone’s camera, all you have to do is take a photo (of a sign, sign, advertisement, etc.), and the application will translate its meaning from the original language to the user-specified one.

Similar in functionality is the Abbyy TextGraber+Translator application, which allows you to select one of 60 translation directions, recognize photographed text, translate it, and save it in a user-friendly format.

Text translation program for iOS devices

Today in the AppStore you can also easily find many programs for translating text from an image, but the most convenient and popular are Lingvo Dictionaries - a photo translator that can easily cope with the recognition of photographed text, but it is important to take into account good lighting and the correct shooting angle. An extensive database of dictionaries allows you to select up to 30 translation directions. It is also worth paying attention to the simple and convenient free photo translator Photo Translate, which has modest functionality, but does an excellent job of converting text from an image and translating it. It is important to remember that this program only works online, and without an available Internet connection you will not be able to translate anything.

As an alternative for tourists who actively travel to different countries, the iSignTranslate application is perfect, the main task of which is to correctly and quickly translate various road signs, signs and advertisements on a smartphone in real time. In the basic version, only 2 languages are available - English and Russian, the rest can be downloaded for an additional fee. Third-party online services are used for translation, so it is important to have a stable Internet connection.

A program for translating text into photos for the Windows Phone mobile platform

Use the Translator program, which you can download completely free from the Windows Phone store. By installing it on your smartphone, you will get all the basic functionality of a photo translator. A distinctive feature of the program is its ability to overlay already translated text on top of the original photo. The function is quite new and not always convenient, so the user has the opportunity to disable it.

That's all. We hope that now, when you are getting ready to travel, you will not forget to download the most suitable application for you to translate text from a photo and navigate your new country without any problems.
