After the success of a large number of electro-punk remixes of the song Factory City, the group began to classify their work as electro-punk, by which they meant a harder sound with elements of punk, diluted with electronic music. However, fans of punk music did not agree with this, they believed that the songs were not aggressive enough to be considered as such. MIA. formed in 1997 in Berlin when TV presenter Sarah Kuttner introduced school friends Mieze and Andreas Ross (who later changed his name to Andy Penn), Robert Schütze and Ingo Puls. In 1999, the group released their first single, “Sugar My Skin,” under the BMG label, but due to creative differences, the musicians decided to break their contract.
