The best diablo clones. MMORPG similar to Diablo

Many of you have probably heard about “Diablo clones” - this is what the gaming community calls games that have gameplay similar to the famous “Diablo” series. According to established terminology, this subgenre is called “Action RPG”, and the gameplay style is “hack and slash”. Sometimes such works are attributed to the founder of the subgenre - “Roguelike RPG” (in common parlance - “roguelike”), but “diablo-like” games overlap with it only partially, with such elements as a top view, clearing dungeons, free movement around the map, and much more number of enemies. However, traditional roguelikes are also characterized by turn-based gameplay, random generation of levels, irreversible death of the hero, and an emphasis on the role-playing element. In this regard, “Diablo” met the masses halfway, simplifying the rules of the game and getting rid of tedious dialogues, riddles and other attributes of the genre. Now the level of hardcore - unforgivable mistakes, increased difficulty and other sadomasochism - was allowed to be customized by the player to his taste. “Blizzard Entertainment (then Blizzard North) made the right decision: the game was a stunning success, it was accessible to beginners and pleased veterans as well. The whole world played the Diablo series.

Of course, heirs soon appeared. In many ways, they repeat the cult game, improving or offering alternative mechanics. Almost all of them, like the original, are in the dark fantasy genre. Let's look at the best representatives of Diablo clones, and to a greater extent - the most stable horror competitors.

Path of Exile (2013)

The New Zealand company “Grinding Gear Games” has created a kind of “Diablo-online”, but without micro-transactions that affect the balance (without “donation”). And even despite the fact that “Diablo 3” came out a little earlier and also allowed gamers to hack together online, “Path of Exile” surpassed its predecessor in many attributes. The creators of the clone did not simplify everything and everyone, like Blizzard Entertainment, which was focused solely on profit. Unlike Diablo 3, and the previous parts of the saga, Path of the Exile gives greater freedom to level up your character.

This is the first game of the genre in which all active abilities are given only by found or purchased “gems” - gems that are inserted into weapons or elements of armor.

Not only that, but Grinding Gear Games gave players shock and awe with a colossal passive skill tree. Choose any of the countless branches and download whatever you want for any class. Therefore, the choice of class only affects the starting characteristics and initial location in the Tree of Passive Skills. There are more than a thousand skills, the most interesting and useful ones are located as far as possible from the starting positions of the characters. There are currently seven classes to choose from in the game: Marauder, Witch, Ranger, Duelist, Templar, Shadow and Heiress. Several acts, many bosses and mini-bosses, as well as constant additions and innovations from the developers.

The game also has many interesting features. For example, there is no traditional trade using gold. Instead, there is a well-developed barter system. Although, in truth, this does not change matters much.

The graphic component is excellent for a genre that seems to have recently thrown off the shackles of isometry. There are no complaints about the picture either, because it puts more emphasis on realism. In addition, in Path of Exile, all the joys of multiplayer were available from the very beginning, and Blizzard introduced the possibility of battles between players when most were already tired of Diablo. Although both projects have millions of fans around the world.

"Path of Exile" is one of the main competitors of the "Diablo" series at the moment. Many people rate the game higher than its predecessor. Although both have the same shortcomings inherent in the genre as a whole - they get boring after the main campaign, but the player is required to continue to go through the same plot and the same locations on higher difficulties.

GrimDawn(open early access since 2013, still in development) & TitanQuest (2006)

The action of "Titan Quest", a full-fledged Diablo clone, takes place in Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Mesopotamia, the Great Wall of China, and also in the world of the dead. The game was released in 2006 to success and hordes of fans, followed by the impressive expansion “Immortal Throne”. And with that the song gradually died down. A bright, juicy game in which there is little new, but many improvements to the attributes of the genre. And it’s very nice to choose and download classes to choose from. The game can hardly be called close to horror, unlike the next project of the developers.

"Grim Dawn" has a difficult fate. It is being created by the former authors of Titan Quest. The guys have enormous experience, and their ambitions have room to expand, since they no longer need to indulge the whims of the collapsed THQ. Grim Dawn is one of the earliest and biggest stars of Kickstarter, with indie developers receiving more than half a million dollars. Since then, the project is still being developed, new acts are being slowly added, but they are in the public domain and can already be played. There's even multiplayer.

Grim Dawn, as the name suggests, is a very dark game. This is the darkest fantasy in this genre. The developers even moved away from the traditional deserts and snows of the later acts: there is an eternal rusty sunset, dirt and rot. And dark dungeons, where without them. It's full of well-established mechanics from Titan Quest, beloved by players for all sorts of conveniences and the first perfect co-op. But instead of the mythical and fairy-tale motifs of the Ancient World, a unique fantasy setting has been developed here: the world is devastated and almost fell due to a past war with all sorts of evil spirits, and the usual medieval weapons are adjacent to gunpowder - muskets, dynamite, etc. Unlike its predecessors, “Grim Dawn” is much stricter on the player, and even on “Easy” for the first time, some locations and opponents will cause a lot of headaches. The monsters are interesting and varied, and destroying them is more enjoyable than in other similar games. Dismemberment and all sorts of bloodiness are also not the last feature of the game.

Quests and riddles deserve special attention; they are not as easy as in the Diablo series, but provide the player with a choice of actions, force them to communicate a lot with the characters, are very complex and represent really interesting stories that fit organically. Basically, they talk not so much about the fate of the world and mystical creatures, but about the cruelty and stupidity of people.

While the three big acts are ready, all game mechanics are working properly (including crafting assembly items). There are five classes to choose from, and you can choose two of them, giving you a wide range of abilities. Many players have several heroes pumped to the maximum that can be transferred to a new act, but the sequel is in no hurry to be released. Perhaps this is the only significant drawback of the game. When the game is fully and officially released, it will compete with “Diablo”, as it develops the successes of “Titan Quest” (one of the most famous “Diablo clones”), and also does this through horror.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 1, 2 (2013, 2014)

The enchanting atmosphere of vampire steampunk and that same Van Helsing, a carefully designed system of classes and skills, a funny companion, mini-games and much more. Unfortunately, these games are played out too quickly. Dmitry Tikhonov wrote in more detail about the first part in his.

Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms (2014)

A dark, leisurely and psychologically oppressive game that tries to go beyond Diablo clones by paying more attention to history and plot. The main distinguishing feature: the central character is a demon, who gradually recruits a “party” of heroes from mortals, calling them his Dolls. His puppets fight in the world of the living (not always at the will of the demon master), and he only communicates with them and sometimes influences them from the ghostly world of the dead. The player constantly switches between characters and worlds, both of which contain equally difficult dangers. There are no monosyllabic quests here, and the characters interact with each other in a funny way. Unfortunately, behind the obvious advantages lies a darkness, albeit small, but still shortcomings. Many attributes of the game are unfinished (crafting, loot, balance of skills - everything is very poor), and when it leans into a role-playing element, it slides into an overly monotonous and dreary “action”. Perhaps it is the combat that cries out to be given more attention or, in extreme cases, minimized. "Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms" found a middle ground between action and RPG, but little good came of it.

Sacred 1, 2, 3 (2004, 2008, 2014)

The admittedly terrible third installment left a nasty mark on the series. Corridor style, lack of RPG elements, terrible balance, bugs and other nightmares. But the first “Sacred” was at one time the only worthy competitor to the isometric “Diablo 2”, only instead of the traditional leveling of abilities, here new skills were literally selected along with other things from defeated enemies, all that remained was to create combinations from them to your taste. At the same time, there were still a whole host of parameters (perks) available for improvement. In addition, the first part is strong with some quests, the ability to ride on horseback and a magnificent world map; it was really interesting to study it, regardless of everything else.

The second part continued the traditions of the first and boasted improved modern 3D graphics. Although the sequel came out a little more monotonous than the original. In general, the “Sacred” series is a must-read for fans of the genre; its characters are very different to choose from and will be remembered for a long time: just look at the star of all parts - Seraphim!

A moderately bloody, sometimes quite cruel, story about summoning demons... but “Diablo” will still be much darker in comparison. “Sacred,” despite all the seriousness and tension of the global plot and most of the quests, loved to joke sweetly.

As a result of the article, I would like to draw the attention of readers to the following: “Diablo 3” was criticized for becoming less dark, gothic and hardcore than its cult predecessors - the first and second parts of the series; however, today the latest games in this direction (“Grim Dawn”, “Path of Exile” and others) are turning to the roots, trying to make the gameplay and atmosphere more complex, darker, and, well, bring something new to the boring monotony of the genre. And this, of course, cannot but rejoice. But for now the genre itself, as before, is not for everyone, and perhaps not suitable for everyone.

If readers are interested in something else like this, here are a few more games - in some places they are not quite full-fledged Diablo clones (and in general the boundaries are vague, don’t forget), and in others they are completely far from horror: “Torchlight 1-2 ", "Revenant", "Nox", "Dungeon Siege 1-3", "Hellgate: London", "Darkspore", "Marvel Heroes", "Blood Magic", "No Time for Dragons".

Diablo is the universally recognized king of hack and slash games, many studios tried to create worthy competition for it, but only a few succeeded. At first glance, it is not difficult to choose a suitable setting and send players to “chop enemies into cabbages”, however, strangely enough...

maintaining a very delicate balance between collecting loot and respawning enemies turned out to be a hellishly difficult task for many developers.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard

An ancient prophecy that during the coldest winter the Jotuns will return to take revenge on the gods of Asgard is beginning to come true. No one and nothing can resist the formidable giants and only the leader of the Wolves of Midgard clan remains the last reliable person of people and gods.

Any fan of a game like Diablo instinctively feels that without it it would not be complete, but until recently there were no worthy representatives. It cannot be said that the situation has changed dramatically with the release of the project from the Games Farm studio - it lacks what is called “polishing with a file,” but all fans of bearded men with axes should pay attention to the “Wolves of Midgard.”

Sacred

Several centuries after being banished to a lifeless desert, the powerful sorcerer Shaddar, having entered into an alliance with a powerful demon, once again gathers an army of creatures of Darkness to conquer the continent of Ancaria.

Of all the parts of the Sacred series of games, it is the first that makes the most holistic impression, especially if you don’t forget about the Sacred Underworld addon.

Divine Divinity

The powerful Lord of Chaos penetrated the human world of Rivellon and, only at the cost of self-sacrifice, the Council of Seven Races was able to stop the enemy, after defeating whom, the “Blade of Lies” appeared in the mortal world...

The game from the Belgian Larian Studios, released back in 2002, features a large open world, many side quests and a slightly greater emphasis on the role-playing component, all of which together allowed the game to become a classic of the genre, and not just another Diablo clone.

Torchlight 1 and 2

The Twilight City is a source of a valuable resource - ember, which, despite its irreplaceability, has a side effect - turning, with prolonged contact with it, living beings into monstrous creatures...

It is not surprising that it was the people from Blizzard who founded the Runic Games studio who came up with the bright idea of challenging the king of the genre by creating a game like Diablo. The main differences relate to the design - the “torch light” looks a little more... cartoonish, or something. The gameplay is built on absolutely the same principles - smash/break, and collect loot!

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing (game series)

The trilogy about the incredible adventures of Van Helsing (not the same one, but the son of the hero of the novel, Abraham), is essentially a Diablo-style game in a steampunk setting.

Here too, the first part of The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing sets a brisk pace that is not supported by the subsequent parts. Yes, they are not so bad that fans will pass them by, but they are not as good as one might expect.

Bastion

The Global Disaster destroyed the game world and changed its inhabitants beyond recognition. The boy, one of the last survivors of the cataclysm, breaks through to the old Bastion, where he meets Rux and learns from him that by finding the necessary materials, the Bastion can be restored.

The debut project of the Supergiant Games studio received recognition from players not only due to hand-drawn graphics, wonderful music and a story that responds to the player’s actions, but also an excellent combat system in which the skill of the player, rather than the characteristics of the character, comes first.

Titan Quest

Taking advantage of people’s loss of the patronage of the Olympian gods, the titans decided to seize power over the human race, and everything would have worked out for them, if only for the main character, who had become a “thorn in the …” for them:)

Iron Lore Entertainment studio managed to find the right balance and pleasantly surprise fans by transferring the game to Ancient Greece - the setting of the mythology of Hellas is very successfully combined with the mechanics of hack’n’slash games.

Victor Vran

An extremely dynamic action-RPG from the Bulgarian studio Haemimont Games, in which the half-demon Victor Vran challenges hordes of countless monsters who have invaded the kingdom of Zagoravia from the other world.

Among the unique features of this ARPG are the ability to perform jumps and rolls (which is rare for the genre), as well as a system of tests at each level, for completing which you can get not at all frail bonuses.

Grim Dawn

In a world destroyed by war, humanity is on the verge of extinction and in despair, people open a portal from which otherworldly creatures begin to penetrate, distorting and changing the familiar reality beyond recognition.

The role-playing action game from the Crate Entertainment studio is created in the image and likeness of Titan Quest, and is based on identical mechanics, adjusted for the setting and crafting system, as in the custom modification Defense of the Ancients for Warcraft 3.

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr

The Inquisitor of the Imperium arrives at the abandoned monastery of Martyr, which holds a dark secret about the past of the Inquisition. The location of the action is not limited to one location, but allows you to move on your own starship between planets, completing story and side missions.

If we ignore the futuristic setting of the popular Warhammer 40K universe, the action RPG game from NeocoreGames is similar to Diablo 3.

Path of Exile

Perhaps the best (and also free) online game like Diablo at the moment: an isometric game camera, procedurally generated levels, several classes to choose from, a set of active and passive skills, collecting loot on an industrial scale and everyone’s favorite trade.

The high average score of the project from reviewers and players eloquently says that we have before us a real “worthiness”!

Among all the games ever created, there are literally a dozen franchises that anyone who even considers themselves a gamer can easily recognize. And Blizzard's Diablo trilogy definitely ranks high on this list.

The concept of click-send the hero, click-click-kill, embedded in it and which has become incredibly popular, is perfect for transferring to mobile devices, like an enchanted two-handed sword for halving demons. Instead of clicking, you can simply tap on the touch screen with the same success.

True, Blizzard does not yet share this idea and is in no hurry to try the cold and dark waters of the mobile games market.

However, a holy place is never empty, and ideological clones of the famous action-RPG feel very at ease in the vastness of the App Store and Google Play, proliferating in great numbers.

We have chosen for you the most worthy representatives, which all fans of the genre should get acquainted with.

We present to you the 5 best games for Android and iOS in the style of Diablo:

Archangel

By and large, Archangel can only do one thing. But he does it well. Throws one wave of enemies at the player after another without rest, not forgetting to throw up new and more sophisticated ways to tear them to shreds, cut them into pieces, turn them into ashes, and so on.

Such simple-minded straightforwardness sometimes plays a cruel joke on the game. You can play as exactly one hero class, which means that the palette of bloody colors on the screen will sooner or later become boring.

However, the control system, specifically designed for gestures and touches, is capable of creating miracles like a wall of fire or devastating combos, and the top-notch graphics and sound more than compensate for the aforementioned small detail.

Download Archangel from Black Tower Studios possible for 66 rubles, - for 68 rubles.

Heroes Call

Released a little later than Diablo 3, Heroes Call in many ways has become the most correct interpretation of the genre on mobile devices.

Excellent graphics, rich sound, simple controls, many different skill effects and a strong plot make the game a worthy replacement for the hit from Blizzard. But the best thing about it is the simply monstrous number of items that you can combine and equip your brave hero.

The picture is spoiled a little by the tendency to scam people out of money, but such is the nature of free-to-play buh. But to say that this makes Heroes Call dishonest or, even more so, uninteresting, is hard to come by.

Download Heroes Call from Defiant Development, and also available for free.
---

Emissary of War

Most Diablo games assign you one hero and send you to fight hordes of enemies. Creators Emissary of War decided that if you give the player twice as many heroes, the fun will be doubled. So here you need to play as two heroes at once.

And it turned out quite well. The pumped-up “tank” will be the first to run into close combat with the enemies, and let the puny “cleric” stand on the sidelines and deliver healing at the wrong time or cast magic spells. And well-honed controls do not cause any problems with controlling the inseparable couple,

The “pair” mechanics are used here wisely and to the fullest, and excellent dialogues make you love the game even more.

Download Emissary of War from Cedar Hill Games you can use it for free, the version will cost 31 rubles.

Arcane Legends

Diablo gained such popularity not only because it offered players accessibility along with addictive gameplay that reached the point of addiction. It was successful because it offered players the opportunity to jointly go through dungeons and destroy monsters online with friends, joining forces. And get a cooler reward for defeating a particularly fat boss together.

Unlike the above games, Arcade Legends does everything possible to lend a friendly shoulder. For her flirtations with multiplayer (even to the point of leaving for MMORPGs), she received a lot of well-deserved awards and titles from specialized publications.

Using the engine of previous Legends games, Spacetime Studios used all the accumulated experience to create a role-playing action that was verified in all aspects, capable of giving the most pleasant impressions of communicating with a mobile friend.

Download Arcane Legends from Spacetime Studios, and also available for free.

Zenonia 4 / 5

The games in the Diablo series are characterized by a Western fantasy style, near-religious themes, seriousness and darkness, almost tragedy.

But if you prefer an RPG in the style of an oriental school, a lighter plot and a bright picture, then the games in the series Zenonia is exactly what you need to satisfy your thirst for good hack "n" slash.

Zenonia 4, perhaps the best part of the series, in which all the achievements of the previous parts are correctly balanced, without falling into repetition and tastelessness. And, most likely, the only one you will need to forget about everything else for a long time, given the number of available quests to complete, treasures to find and monsters to destroy.

Well, if the fourth part still seems not enough for you, then you can already download the fifth [ / ].

Download Zenonia 4 from Gamevil, and also available for free.

The main character can choose one of three classes. Advancement on the world map is directly related to completing story missions, which makes the game very “linear”. The game has two features that are not found in other games of this genre. The first of them is called “TrueSight” - the hero sees only those enemies who are in his field of vision (monsters can hide behind corners, boxes, etc.). The second feature is important when playing online - when casting a spell, the character pronounces it out loud, which allows opponents to react to it in advance.

The game is made in an eye-pleasing “cartoon” style. You can choose a character from four classes. A special feature of the project is the presence of a third type of energy, which the main character receives for non-stop destruction of monsters. The higher the indicator of this energy, the more effective the character becomes in battle.

The main character, convicted of crimes, is sent to an island of prisoners, overrun by monsters and demons.
A revolutionary system for developing passive skills allows you to create an absolutely unique hero. The game does not have the classic increase in difficulty after completion of this genre, so the player will not have to complete story missions twice. The "map" system, which creates random locations with monsters, makes the late stage of the game especially interesting.

The very first part Diablo was published at the end of the distant 1996, and since then the army of its fans has been steadily growing every year, and new parts do not disappoint gamers. Having become an undoubted hit and one of the most significant games of the past century, Diablo inspired dozens of clones and imitations from game developers.

No matter how great this series of games is, there are only three parts in the line, and therefore insatiable fans are forced to look for similar Action/RPGs. Of course, gambling software manufacturers quickly caught on to the public’s desires: some adopted both the atmosphere and gameplay of Diablo, others tried to add something of their own, but few managed to come close to the original and appeal to players. So let's look at the most successful games similar to Diablo, which will undoubtedly appeal to all fans of the popular series!

Judging not only by gameplay, but also by spirit, then Torchlight can rightfully be considered one of the closest games to Diablo. It was released in 2009 and is currently available for all operating systems, and in 2012 its second part was released. Oddly enough, many of the creators of Diablo took part in the development of the game, perhaps this is the reason for the incredible success of the “clone”.

The gameplay differs little from the original source: the same randomly generated dungeons, a similar development system, a simple and intuitive interface, but it also has its own characteristics.

First of all, Torchlight is distinguished by its graphics, which are cartoonish and bright. The whole game is filled with humor and even the dungeons are rather mysterious than gloomy. The player is offered a choice of three main classes, most reminiscent of the Barbarian, Mage and Amazon, and is given a pet as support. The companion not only fully participates in battles, but also has a small inventory, can travel to the city to sell loot, and even transform with the help of fish that the main character catches in special places.

Titan Quest

In 2006, one of the most similar games to Diablo dedicated to antiquity. Despite such a radical difference in theme, Titan Quest appealed to the masses and even became an object of imitation, but no one could repeat its success. The developers so successfully conveyed the mood, gameplay and dynamics of Diablo that some critics seriously accused the games of being too similar.

A distinctive feature is the character leveling system here. Initially, you can only choose your gender, name and tunic color, and with each level the player himself distributes characteristics, such as health, strength, intelligence, etc., and also chooses two branches of skill development. When creating locations and opponents, the artists were inspired by the mythology of ancient Greece, Egypt and Eastern tribes.

Dungeon Siege

The Dungeon Siege game currently has three chapters, the first of which was released in 2002 and created a sensation thanks to its unique progression system and excellent graphics. Having adopted a lot from the original source, the creators focused their efforts on developing character leveling.

Skills and characteristics here improve as they are used, and as the level increases, new group members become available to whom you can prescribe their behavior in battle or even switch to them. A cute donkey also runs with the team, capable of carrying part of the loot.

Divine Divinity

The developers of the game Divine Divinity have clearly shown that it is not enough to blindly copy the source, it is necessary to introduce something new, both in design and in gameplay. Thus, loyal fans of Diablo, on the one hand, saw in the game everything that was so dear to them, and on the other hand, they received expanded gaming capabilities, an improved control system, and even a social component.

When developing your hero, it is beneficial to pay attention to both mobs and quests, both combat skills and auxiliary ones. In this game similar to Diablo Features such as, for example, alchemy and enchantment, which require certain items for normal functioning, have been implemented.
