Then they came up with the idea of creating a group - the result of cooperation was a near-grunge group Kara's Flowers(the name goes back to a mutual friend, to whom they were all partial), who began to actively perform in 1995. Later, fate brought the musicians together with independent producer Tommy Allen, who, together with his friend songwriter John DeNicola, decided to help the group and produce their first record. The demo tape fell into the hands of management Reprise Records, with whom KF entered into a contract. At the time, the band sounded like "a mixture of Fugazi music and Sesame Street lyrics." Their debut album was released in 1996 The Fourth World in the spirit of Britpop. Despite the very good material, the disc flopped - it sold just over 5,000 copies - as did the single "Soap Disco". As a result, KF disbanded in 1998, and Levine and Carmichael went to Long Island, New York, to study. It was there that the musicians met hip-hop and R&B culture, which radically changed their understanding of music.
In 2000, Levine and Carmichael returned to Los Angeles and, along with Madden and Dasik, recreated KF with an updated sound.
