Caricature portraits are funny paintings that depict distorted faces of people, while maintaining their likeness. In this lesson you will learn how to draw a caricature portrait using the program Adobe Photoshop and graphic Wacom tablet Intuos.

1. Sketching a caricature
Step 1
Create a new document in Adobe program Photoshop with the following dimensions 1110×1270 px, resolution 300 dpi. Keep the original image from which you will draw your caricature portrait handy. I'm using the original image of a man, which you can see in the screenshot below.
Study your object carefully, paying attention to details that particularly stand out. The key to creating a caricature is to highlight the special features of a person's face. In this case, you can enlarge your ears, lips, and jawline.
Once you have decided which facial features you will be enhancing, start creating your caricature. with white background . And with the help Hard Round Pressure Brush Opacity (Hard Round Pressure Opacity Brush (B)), sketch out your cartoon subject. In the top brush control panel, don't forget to activate the mode Pressure controls Opacity
(Pressure for Opacity).
Sketch in gray tones to make the sketch as clear as possible. This is a simple design, so there is no need to add a background or design the clothing in detail. Focus on enhancing facial features, including emphasizing the jawline.

Step 1
2. Coloring Create a new layer below the sketch layer. Using a tool Gradient (Gradient Tool (G)), gradient type Linear
(Linear), gradient colors from muted green (#3e3726) to light green (#695d50), fill this layer with a linear gradient.
Step 2 To start coloring the caricature, we need a base. Create another new layer below the sketch layer, name this layer The basis (Base). Using a hard round brush at 100% Rigidity (Hardness), paint the base colors on the face, hair and shirt collar. Because We changed the blending mode for the sketch layer to(Soft Light), then the sketch will perfectly match the base colors.
On this same layer, don't forget to paint the eyes, facial hair and lips with the base colors. The numbers of the basic color shades are shown in the screenshot below.
Step 3
Create a new layer on top of the base colors layer To start coloring the caricature, we need a base. Create another new layer below the sketch layer, name this layer(Base) as a clipping mask. Name this layer Shadow(Shadows), change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication(Multiply). We use a tool Pipette(Eyedropper Tool (I)) to select color swatches as the foreground color, then, using the color shades that are already present on the canvas, add the first stage of shadows to the portrait.
Create another new layer as a clipping mask to the layer To start coloring the caricature, we need a base. Create another new layer below the sketch layer, name this layer(Base). Name this layer Texture(Texture). Change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication(Multiply). By using Triangular Pastel Brush(Triangle Pastel Brush (B)) add brown skin texture to the face and neck.
Step 4
Let's add some highlights. Create a new layer as a clipping mask to the layer To start coloring the caricature, we need a base. Create another new layer below the sketch layer, name this layer(Base). Name this layer Lightglare(Linear Dodge (Add)) and using the tool Pipette(Eyedropper Tool (I)), sample colors from adjacent areas to add highlights. You will need to keep your original image nearby during this process, this will help when adding highlights. Accentuate the highlights in the upper area of the face.
Now select all the coloring layers, including the sketch layer except the background layer, to merge them (Ctrl+E).
Name the new merged layer Caricature(Caricature).
Step 5
It's time to clean up our drawing and make it clearer. For this purpose use the same brush Hard Round Pressure Opacity(Hard Round Pressure Opacity) to correct texture on the face, hair and collar. Make all adjustments on the layer Caricature(Caricature), this will provide sharper edges instead of soft blurry ones.
Step 6
Create a new layer on top of the layer Caricature(Caricature). Name this layer Lightglare(Highlights). Change the blending mode for this layer to Overlap(Overlay), and then using white and bright warm colors, add highlights to the skin. Make the ears and cheeks a little more pink, and the top of the forehead and hair brighter.
Don't forget about the beard! For our drawing to come to life, we need to draw small parts, reflecting light glare. First create a new layer on top of the layer Light glare(Highlights), change the blending mode for this layer to Linear brightener (Add)(Linear Dodge (Add)). Name this layer Details(Details) and using the tool Pipette(Eyedropper Tool (I)), sample the colors that are already on the canvas to paint highlights in this area.
Draw the hair for the beard in three various directions. Draw small, fine hairs to show off individual hairs and add movement to the image.
Step 7
Merge all the caricature layers except the background layer to complete our painting on two separate layers. This will help in execution and save file size.
Continue drawing details to add more personality to this portrait. Add more fine hairs to your entire facial hair, including your mustache, beard, and eyebrows. Add highlights to the lips and touch up the edges to get the perfect portrait.
If you feel that you can add more details to the drawing, then add clothing details. In this case, I drew the shoulders and part of the shirt. Paint the dark blue base first and then add the folds to the shirt using slow strokes with a soft round brush.
If you need to lengthen your body, then let's go Filter - Plastic(Filter > Liquify) and using the tool Deformation(Forward Warp Tool (W)), pull the shirt and shoulders down.
Create a new layer on top of the layer Caricature(caricature), change the blending mode for this layer to Linear light(Linear Light). Using the same Blue colour from the shirt, paint shadows at the bottom of the design and also on the sides using a soft round brush. Merge all layers into one layer.

How to draw a caricature with a pencil step by step
Step one. Remember, a caricature is not a portrait; if you draw it almost exactly, it will only be funnier. First, draw two squares and connect them with a line.
Step two. Like any face, a caricature should also be symmetrical. Carefully draw big ears, huge, I would say. The head will be shaped like a pressed rugby ball, the nose and lips will be the same size as the ears.
Step three. Let's draw a normal sized eye so it doesn't look too scary. We also need some hair, and we also need a long and thin neck, which is attached to a body smaller than the head. This is exactly what a caricature looks like - completely out of proportion.

Proportions and basic face shapes
First you need to take a sheet of paper on which you will draw and determine where to place the image.
Firstly, we must take into account that the proportions human face almost the same, despite the fact that everyone’s facial parts are different. The figure shows that the face can be divided into three parts: from the hairline to the eyebrows, from the eyebrows to the base of the nose, from the base of the nose to the chin. The size of the ears is approximately equal to the distance from the eyebrows to the tip of the nose, and the lower part of the face is divided into equal parts by a line drawn under the lower lip.
Despite the fact that faces are deliberately distorted in caricatures, maintaining proportions is necessary! If you greatly reduce or enlarge the nose, leaving all other features the same, then the resemblance to the original will be lost, and the image may turn out to be quite ugly.
If we want to change the size of the nose, then to get the correct image of the face, we need to change the proportions of the eyes and mouth. If you imagine that the line of the eyes and nose represent the letter T, then the figure will show how a change in one line of the letter T entails a change in the other line. Suppose that the nose and eyes are connected by strings thrown over the wheels, then if we move the eyes wider, the nose will shorten; if the nose lengthens, the eyes will move closer.
The lower pictures show standard face shapes that are used for. The basic principle is that when the oval of the face is stretched or compressed, other parts of the face are correspondingly stretched or compressed. It should be noted that in figures 1 and 3 the lower part of the face is elongated, and the nose in the first case decreases, and in the second it increases. Why? Because the fundamental principle of caricature is used here: when the original has something long, it is lengthened, and something short is shortened.
Based on what was said above, we conclude that caricature should begin with an image of the shape of the head and a schematic sketch of the letter T - nose - eyes.
How to draw eyes?
The eyes are the mirror of the soul, and in our case, the center of our entire cartoon. Sometimes you can identify the original by the drawing, just by looking at the eyes.
Often artists, trying not to lose the resemblance, are afraid to change the eyes. If you correctly emphasize certain features of the eyes, you can get an even greater resemblance, the cartoon will be more expressive.
First you need to determine the position of the eyes relative to the horizontal line.
When caricaturing the eyes, you can additionally tilt them up or down, this will add even more grotesqueness to the drawing.
The same is true with the location of the eyes relative to the vertical axis of the face. For people with close-set eyes, you can narrow them even further, and wide-set eyes can be placed almost at the temples.
How to draw a nose?
Considering the issue, how to draw a cartoon step by step, let's move on to the image of the nose.
The nose is perhaps the most interesting part of the face to caricature. Sometimes cartoonists simply study the shape of the nose, enlarge it, and then the drawing is completed. Their portraits are similar to each other, differing only in their noses.
Inexperienced artists do not take into account the fact that the nose is voluminous, and in their works this part of the face is flat. If you want to draw correctly, then you need to understand that the image of the nose changes depending on the position of the head.
When the head is thrown back, only the lower part is visible, and the bridge of the nose is not visible; if the head is lowered, the nose lengthens, and the nostrils are not visible.
As already mentioned, when caricaturing, you should excessively reduce or enlarge the part of the face that is the smallest or largest in the original. The child has a small nose, we make it even smaller, we enlarge the beautiful long nose of the Armenian even more. Just don’t forget about the rule of the letter T – nose – eyes and adjust other parts of the face proportionally.
For beginners, it is useful to have basic templates according to which the nose is drawn. First, you need to decide which of the presented samples the nose of the original is similar to, and then try to depict it.
Mouth image
The mouth is quite difficult to draw. First you need to draw a horizontal line and determine how it is located relative to this line. Here are some options:
Depending on the age of the person, the image of the line around the mouth changes - if the person is young, then it is quite straight, if he is older, then it is curved.
If you draw a smile, then you need to remember that teeth are not a straight picket fence with the same dimensions. All teeth are slightly narrowed downward and have their own shape.
To depict the mouth, you can use the following technique.
In order for the mouth in the cartoon to resemble the mouth of the original, it is necessary to correctly correlate the sizes and proportions between the other parts of the face. To decide how to draw a mouth, try to imagine what geometric figure it is similar in the state of a smile - triangle, circle, oval, rhombus. This will help you to use templates for drawing a mouth.

It is noteworthy that the details of the description of the caricature technique are not given in higher education. educational institutions due to lack of application nature. However, as you know, each author has his own style, and the execution of cartoons by different specialists is united by common criteria. 
When making a caricature, you need to remember that some parts or features of the face need to be enlarged or highlighted. This emphasis must be placed very competently in order to maintain the similarity with the original and, at the same time, amusingly distort the portrait. If you pay attention to portraits, then the eyes, together with the nose, form a kind of letter T. As you know, no two people are exactly alike, but below are the main examples of the shapes of the eyes and nose, which are most often used in working with cartoons.

For example, imagine that in the said letter T there is some thread that moves with the help of wheels that are located between the eyes and at the bottom of the nose.
