How to fix a broken spinning rod. The handles are very skillful (we fix a broken spinning rod)

Any fishing should be fun. Enjoyment from the process itself, from the catches, from the use of rods, reels and baits. After all, fishing equipment is not bought for idle pastime, not just to “have it” or to go out on the water once or twice and make a dozen casts. Most of us buy gear for many years, with an eye to numerous fishing trips.

But sometimes it happens that a fish that bites unexpectedly breaks the tackle. It seems that all the recommendations are followed, and the diameter of the fishing line is chosen correctly, and fishing takes place according to all the rules, but... Suddenly we hear a crunch, and the spinning rod changes from a two-armed one to a three-armed one or is divided into even more parts. The situation is unpleasant. The fishing has been ruined, and I’m saddened to tears for my favorite tackle. What to do? Should we throw away what we think is a ruined rod and go buy a new one?

The answer is clear - no!

In order to bring seemingly dead rods and “crunchy” reels back to life, the Fisherman’s World company, already at the time of its founding, decided to create its own Service center engaged in the repair and maintenance of gear. And it doesn’t matter where or from whom the rods and reels were purchased. Now any angler who needed to inspect a reel, replace its lubricant, or fix a broken rod could contact the Service Center and have their favorite gear restored.

But the Fisherman's World Service Center is not only about repair and maintenance of gear from any manufacturer.

Our Service Center carries out an examination of rods and reels, and carries out warranty replacement of NORSTREAM gear if the breakdown occurs due to the fault of the manufacturer. The Center employs experienced fishermen who not only know all the intricacies of fishing, but are also well versed in repairs. High qualifications and many years of experience in using and repairing gear allow them to perform the most complex and important work.

Some fishermen, if their gear breaks, immediately go to the store for a new one. However, this is not always necessary. In most cases, a failed spinning rod can be restored on your own.

This approach will not only help you save money, but will also allow you to preserve your favorite gear, which, most likely, has served you faithfully for many years. In addition, after repair, the spinning rod may even become stronger - after all, during the restoration process, its weakest part will be strengthened.

Search for spare parts

First of all, it is worth considering option to replace a failed part- rod bend, guide ring, reel spool and so on. If we are talking about a plug-in two-part spinning rod, the upper leg almost always breaks, which is noticeably more fragile than the lower one - it can often be found on sale. The same applies to those parts of spinning reels that most often fail.

However, the likelihood of success in this case greatly depends on the manufacturer. For example, rods and reels from the Volzhanka company are known among fishermen for the fact that you can always find spare parts for them at the manufacturer or official representative. The same applies to many other manufacturers.

Replacing a broken part will not be cheap, but the price of such spare parts is much lower than the cost of a new spinning rod. In this case, all the working properties of the tackle will be restored completely, and it will be like new. Thus, it is the simplest and most effective, but at the same time the most expensive option restoring the performance of the spinning rod.

Form repair

In the first case, restoring the tackle on your own is not very difficult, but ideally you will need materials in the form of the elbow of another fishing rod of a suitable diameter. If you have old broken forms that you no longer need, repairing them won't take long.

To carry it out, you need:

  • process the edges of the fracture - saw off to the end of the cracks and clean the edges with a block;
  • make an internal insert 7 cm long from the elbow of another fishing rod of a suitable diameter and give it the necessary taper;
  • make an external insert about 4 cm long from a piece of an elbow with a larger diameter and give it the desired taper.

To give the inner insert the desired shape, it is necessary to grind it in such a way that the outer diameter at one - upper - end is smaller than at the other, and it fits exactly into the place where the form is broken. When processing the outer insert, on the contrary, you need to adjust its internal diameters.

The inserts must be securely fixed with any suitable glue - for example, you can use epoxy. First, you need to guide the inner sleeve inside the knee using a knitting needle, then, continuing to hold it with this knitting needle, put the upper section of the blank on it.

You can also move the pass ring located below the fracture (closer to the butt of the spinning rod) to an insert that covers the knee from above. Thanks to this, the finished tackle will have a more presentable appearance, and the junction of the two knee fragments will be able to be relieved as much as possible.

Repair of a blank with one inner sleeve

The repair described above allows you to quickly return the spinning rod to working condition, and if handled correctly, it can serve for a long time. However, such technology has significant drawback- in order to mount an outer bushing carefully adjusted along the upper and lower diameters, it must be put on from the tip side, for which, most likely, you will need to remove one or more passage rings.

There are also simpler option, which ensures the proper level of strength and durability of the restored gear. To carry it out, you must first install the inner sleeve, and then make a winding of nylon thread or other suitable material over the form, which must also be lubricated with glue. The sufficient length of such a winding is 3 cm, but more can be done.

The larger the diameter of the thread, the fewer turns will be needed and the higher the strength of the connection will be, however, you should not use too thick one either, as this will worsen the appearance of the finished product. If you match the thread to the color of the blank, the repaired tackle will look quite good.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is that modern high-quality gear has a carefully calibrated system and an equally carefully calibrated arrangement of rings. This ensures maximum casting range and optimal load distribution over the form during fishing.

After repairs, which involve trimming the broken knee, the spinning rod will lose some of its properties. Therefore, the repair technology described above is suitable primarily for inexpensive gear, and for a top-level spinning rod, the best option would be to replace a broken knee. If you can’t find it on the open market, you can contact a good gear repairman, who will probably be able to select a good option.

Spinning rod tip repair

The tips of two spinning rods come in two types - hollow (tubular tip) and solid (solid tip). In the first case, their restoration takes place using the form repair technology, which was described above:

  • it is necessary to trim the edges of the broken knee to the end of the cracks;
  • select the internal and external bushings of the appropriate size and sharpen them so that they fit perfectly to the fracture site;
  • connect the lower and upper parts of the broken knee.

You can also use the option with an inner sleeve and an outer winding.

Whip repair

The whips of modern spinning rods are very flexible, and their breakage during fishing is practically impossible. Most often, they break in half either when the fishing line gets tangled around the tulip, when an angler who did not notice this casts, or when the spinning rod is handled carelessly on the shore or during transportation.

If a solid glued whip breaks, the correct solution is to replace it. All you need to do for this is saw off a piece of the elbow with the old tip and glue in a new one. Finding a suitable option in a fishing store will not be difficult, but it is better to go to one that has a larger assortment. You can purchase a solid tip for a fly rod or for a feeder. There are also solid spinning whips on sale, but they are more difficult to find.

Installing the tip is the same as installing the inner sleeve when repairing a blank - for this you will need glue and a long knitting needle. If the whip breaks near the very tip, you can simply saw off its tip and install a new tulip with a suitable landing diameter on it. In this case, the spinning rod will become a little shorter and the tip will be stiffer.

Tulip repair

Of all the guide rings, it is the tulip that is subjected to the greatest load during fishing, so it is not surprising that it breaks quite often. Fortunately, this spinning rod breakdown is the easiest to fix.

You just need to cut off the tip with the old tulip and glue a new upper passage ring with a suitable mounting diameter to the tip. At the same time, it makes sense to carefully search in stores for a model that is as similar as possible to your own. For example, if the old tulip had SiC inserts and an anti-flood design, you should try to find the same one. If you can’t find a perfectly suitable guide ring, it’s better to take an option with a larger bore diameter, and on the tip of the fishing rod make a winding of thread of the required thickness and cover it with glue.

Repair work must be approached carefully and without haste. Very important glue the tulip straight so that it stands coaxially with the rest of the passage rings. If the tulip deviates even slightly to the right or left, this will lead to a significant reduction in casting distance and accuracy.

Spinning reel repair

A modern spinning reel is a complex and simple mechanism at the same time. It is, however, not difficult to sort through it if necessary and if you have some experience. If you are doing this for the first time, it will take you longer, but in this situation, difficulties usually do not arise. The main thing is to have a detailed circuit diagram of your coil model or photograph each assembly before disassembling it. Otherwise, the chances of assembling the inertia-free system correctly are slim.

This should be done if the movement of the line laying machine has become difficult, it is difficult to reset to the working position, or the clutch has begun to work poorly. Most often the reason is sand, which gets inside and mixes with the lubricant. To minimize the likelihood of this problem, try to never place your tackle on the ground when fishing from shore. Thanks to this basic precaution, they will serve you much longer.

In many cases, a simple overhaul and replacement of lubricant is enough to return the mechanism to normal operation. If the situation is more complex and you need replacement of one or more parts, it is worth answering the question about the advisability of such repairs. In the case of an inexpensive reel, it is worth carrying out only if the new parts are cheap or you can make them yourself - for example, bend a line handler arm from a wire of a suitable diameter to replace the old one.

Thus, if the gear fails, it is not necessary to buy a new one. A breakdown of a spinning rod can often be fixed on your own, bringing it back to life - this applies to both the rod and the reel. Which of these two options to choose is up to you. You should not discount repairs in the workshop, especially if we are talking about high-quality gear - a good specialist will always be able to do the necessary work in the best possible way.

How to repair a spinning rod with your own hands without going to specialized workshops? This question is asked by many fishing enthusiasts, since not all localities have such specialists, and the breakdowns themselves are minor, so you don’t want to spend extra money.

No one, even a seasoned fisherman, not to mention beginners, is immune from troubles while fishing. Perhaps the saddest thing that can happen on the shore is a rod breakage. Don't despair, any problem can be fixed. And if it is small, then it is quite possible to carry out the repair yourself at home.

When do spinning rod breakdowns occur?

Some fishermen, in particular beginners, have a careless attitude towards gear. They do not think about the strength of materials and their durability, so they can overload the spinning rod or create uncharacteristic loads on it, which will lead to breakdown.

The most common situations that lead to questions about how to fix a broken spinning rod are:

  • Accidental impact on the side of the boat. A crack may appear in the blank, and at the next critical load the rod breaks.
  • Using lures that weigh more than the rod allows. As a result, the overloaded form will “fold” during a power cast. What is a spinning test?
  • When assembling and disassembling, some spinning anglers carelessly lean the fishing rod against the car door or lay it on the ground. The form may be accidentally stepped on or broken by closing the door.
  • Carrying the assembled spinning rod tip first. It can be accidentally “stuck” into the ground or into a tree trunk. After this, the rod tip usually breaks.

What minor breakdowns can you repair yourself?

How to fix a spinning rod with your own hands? Naturally, not every problem can be fixed at home. In case of serious damage, the rod must be given to skilled rodbuilders who specialize in repairing “rods” and assembling new ones. There are situations when nothing can help a fishing rod that has become inoperative and will have to be thrown away.

How to repair a broken spinning rod depends on the type of breakdown. Malfunctions that any angler can fix are:

  • Breakage of the tip of a spinning rod - breaking of no more than 10–15 cm of the tip.
  • Failure of rings and tulip - chips and scratches on the insert, fracture or deformation of the frame.
  • The cork handle becomes unusable - over time, the cork gets wet, becomes rotten and begins to crumble.

Even a beginner who has experience working with the tool and knowledge of modern materials can restore a fishing rod after these troubles.

This is the biggest problem and the most difficult to fix and keep the rod working. How to repair a spinning rod? The tip must be fused back to the form. This is only possible in rods with a hollow tip. The repair is done as follows:

  • It is necessary to select a rod that will be installed inside and can connect both parts of the top. It can be a sewing needle, a metal or carbon rod of suitable diameter.
  • Both ends are cleaned of burrs and defects, then degreased with alcohol.
  • Lubricate the inner insert with epoxy glue and install it in the form, connecting the two parts of the upper leg of the rod.
  • Let the glue dry. For reliability, cover the joint with colorless varnish. You can apply a bandage made of strong threads to the former scrap.

It is worth noting that a repaired fishing rod can change its characteristics - action or test. Therefore, it is necessary to test the “stick” before a full trip to the shore of a river or lake.

How to repair a carbon spinning rod that has a solid tip? In this case, you will have to find and buy a new upper bend, since gluing the broken element to the form will not bring any result, and the tip will certainly break even from a small load.

Rod tulips or rings may require replacement due to failure. Most often, scratches and chips form on the inner insert, which lead to damage to the fishing line and cord. This reduces the strength of the equipment and can lead to breakage when throwing the bait forcefully or when landing a large fish.

How to repair a spinning rod by replacing the rings and tulip? This is done according to the following algorithm:

  • We select and buy the necessary set of access rings and a tulip.
  • We remove the old rings by heating their fastening with a candle or lighter.
  • The seats must be cleaned with finishing sandpaper and degreased with alcohol.
  • We install the ring and seat it with epoxy glue. We fix it on top by applying a bandage.
  • After the glue has hardened, cover the place where the ring is placed with colorless varnish.

It is important not to disturb the alignment when installing new rings. This will lead to a decrease in casting distance due to increased friction of the line against the ring inserts. In addition, this can disrupt the structure of the spinning rod and will create critical overloads in the place of the incorrectly fastened ring when landing fish.

How to repair a spinning rod yourself if the cork handle becomes unusable. When the material begins to crumble, you cannot hesitate. You should immediately begin to correct the breakdown so as not to aggravate the situation:

  • Take a wine or champagne cork and finely rub it.
  • Mix the resulting shavings with PVA glue.
  • With the resulting thick mass we cover all defects and chips.
  • After the glue has dried, sand the handle with fine sandpaper.

The handle repaired in this way looks almost like new and is able to last a long time.

How to protect a spinning rod from damage?

There are certain rules for handling a spinning rod so that it lasts a long time and does not break at the wrong time:

  • The assembled fishing rod must be transported in a special hard case that protects it from impacts and breaks. A spinning tube allows you not only to transport your fishing rod, but also to safely store it at home.
  • You cannot carry the rod tip first. To prevent the spinning rod from breaking, it should be held with the tip facing backwards.
  • There is no need to put the fishing rod on the ground, because colleagues may accidentally step on it.
  • You cannot throw a spinning rod in a boat or on the shore so that it does not experience shock loads.
  • Periodically, the “stick” needs to be wiped, especially the internal inserts of the passage rings.
  • You cannot overload the spinning rod, exceeding the lure test.

Finally

Any fisherman should know how to repair a spinning rod with minor breakdowns. This will allow you to quickly return the equipment to working order and save on repairs from specialists. Although, it is better not to relax and always treat the rod with care, following the rules for handling it.

If a spinning rod breaks down, there is no need to rush and order the failed parts: knees, tip, reel seat. Some of the damage can be repaired yourself by repairing the spinning rod yourself.

In order to repair a spinning rod with your own hands, you must first prepare the tools and materials:

  • sharp painting knife;
  • gas-burner;
  • lighter;
  • pliers;
  • small file;
  • sandpaper size 1000;
  • cloth for metal;
  • pieces of carbon fiber rods of various lengths and diameters for repairing a spinning rod knee that is damaged or broken;
  • adhesives - waterproof PVA, epoxy, “Super glue” gel, for fixing bandages, guide rings, and repairing handles;
  • waterproof clear varnish;
  • nylon thread for fastening the installed access rings to the form, masking the place where the spinning rod broke;
  • set of pass rings;
  • corks from wine or champagne bottles.

Having prepared everything you need, you can repair both the failed last pass ring and the broken form near the butt.

Form repair

In modern two-piece plug spinning rods made of high-modulus graphite, the following types of breakdowns occur:

  • cracks or breaks of the first (butt) leg of the spinning rod;
  • cracking or breaking of the upper leg.

Repairing the form in both cases does not require significant expenses. It consists of the following steps:

  1. We inspect the rod at the point of breakage for longitudinal cracks. If they exist, the knee cannot be repaired - under load, the crack will inevitably increase in length and lead to complete failure of the entire knee.
  2. If no cracks are found, use a metal blade to trim the edges of the damaged knee.
  3. From old, but not split graphite knees from another broken fishing rod, we select and cut out a piece 10-15 cm long that fits tightly inside the parts of the broken knee - a scupper.
  4. If necessary, grind the piece a little with sandpaper and a fine file.
  5. We insert the scupper into one of the parts of the repaired knee, so that it fits tightly inside it by 7-8 cm. We generously lubricate the edge of the knee and the scupper inserted into it with epoxy glue. When repairing the butt knee, the scupper can be passed inside it by removing the plug located at the end of the handle after the spinning reel seat.
  6. We insert the second end of the spigot inside the other part of the broken knee so that the gap between the two joined parts of the broken knee is minimal.
  7. Cover the joint with epoxy glue.
  8. We wind a thin nylon thread over the connection, trying to match its color to the tone of the form coating.
  9. We cover the nylon thread bandage with waterproof varnish.
  10. If one of the rings of the spinning rod is very close to the place of breakage, then to strengthen the blank and disguise the bandage, remove it and fasten it above the junction of the broken parts of the knee with nylon thread.
  11. If the breakdown affected the varnish of the spinning rod rings or damaged the winding that attaches the ring to the blank, then it is easier to remove it and reinstall it.

As a result of such repairs, the rod retains its strength, flexibility, slightly changes the structure, but at the same time will allow you to avoid the purchase of an expensive exclusive knee. For the money spent, for any ordinary spinning player such repairs will cost a negligible amount

It is always necessary to consider the feasibility of restoration in the manner described above - for example, if a fiberglass or composite material, which has less wall thickness, strength and flexibility, breaks, it is best to choose a new one to replace the damaged knee. The repair will not return the form to its original strength, it will make it significantly heavier, and if a serious predator bites, the repaired knee will break in the place of the previous damage.

Top repair

A broken tip is a very serious damage to the rod that affects its functionality.

When fishing with light jig baits for spinning rods, the tip is very important. Thanks to it, the angler makes long, accurate casts of miniature twisters and vibrotails. It allows you to make the game of baits more attractive. In addition, the tip is able to signal the weakest, hesitant bite before the angler feels it with his hand.

Repairing the tip of a spinning rod differs for a number of reasons from repairing similar damage to the butt or second knee. Its internal diameter is either very small (it is extremely difficult to select a suitable insert), or the tip is solid (does not have a cavity for a scupper repair connection). Any increase in the rigidity of the tip will lead to a change in its sensitivity, worsen the casting range, and negatively affect the performance of the bait. When loaded, the insert installed in the tip breaks the thin walls from the inside and completely disables this part of the rod.

Therefore, in order to eliminate this breakdown, you should resort to another more delicate repair method:

  • We inspect the broken parts for longitudinal cracks;
  • If no cracks are found, we process parts of the top in the places of breakage with a small needle file to a length of 15–20 mm from the edge. During processing, the varnish is removed and the thickness of the top wall is slightly reduced;
  • We connect both parts with a spigot - a tube of thick paper, which we pre-lubricate with quick-drying epoxy glue. When connecting parts of the top, it is necessary to ensure that the throughput rings are located along the same axis;
  • 20-25 mm below and above the joint we wrap sides of electrical tape, which will prevent glue drips from forming during further installation of the bandage;
  • To eliminate breakage of the tip, carbon fiber is used. Since it is very difficult to buy it in a store, it is most often burned out from pieces of old high-modulus fishing rods. To burn out carbon fiber, take a piece of carbon fiber elbow 20-25 mm long and 10-12 mm in diameter. Holding the piece in pliers, hold it over the flame of a gas burner until the smoke stops coming out. Carefully unwind the tube with the burnt out binders, dividing it into a strip of carbon fiber and a carbon mesh (backing);
  • Lubricate the junction of the two parts of the broken tip with slow-drying epoxy glue diluted in a ratio of 10:1 with hardener;
  • We wrap the backing over the glue, pressing it tightly to the joint;
  • We wrap carbon fabric onto the substrate. We coat each turn of carbon fabric with epoxy glue;
  • We forcefully wrap a layer of tape over the bandage;
  • After the glue has hardened, use a sharp knife to remove the tape and the sides of the electrical tape;
  • We grind the bandage under running water with a file, and then with fine sandpaper;
  • We cover the bandage with waterproof varnish.

With this method of repair, the place where the tip of the spinning rod broke is almost invisible, and the rod itself retains its strength, flexibility and other important properties.

Handle repair

Among all the materials used to produce a spinning rod handle, one of the most common is cork. Having many advantages (softness, a pleasant-to-touch surface, the ability not to harden in cold weather), this material has one big drawback - with prolonged use, pits, cracks, and chips form on it, leading over time to the destruction of the handle.

For small cracks:

  • Grind the cork from a wine bottle on a fine grater until it becomes fine chips;
  • Mix the resulting shavings with PVA glue, fill all defects with the resulting composition;
  • After the glue has dried, sand the surface with fine sandpaper;

Instead of this composition, you can use a wood putty that matches the color.

For large holes and cracks:

  • We cut out the damaged piece by making a rectangular notch in the cork covering of the handle;
  • From a cork that does not have internal cavities, cut out a piece (insert) slightly larger than the recess;
  • Lubricate the recess and insert with waterproof PVA glue;
  • We press the insert under force into the recess and fix it with electrical tape;
  • After 12-14 hours, remove the electrical tape and cut off the part of the glued insert protruding above the surface of the handle with a sharp knife;
  • Clean the handle with fine sandpaper.

Repair of access ring

Often the internal metal-ceramic liner in the passage ring fails. The process of repairing such an element is very simple:

  • We buy a set of rings of different diameters with internal inserts of the same or better quality as on the rod;
  • We select a passage ring with a suitable diameter;
  • Using a sharp knife, carefully remove the inner metal-ceramic liner from its metal frame;
  • We remove the damaged liner from the frame using pliers, clean its inner surface with a small needle file;
  • We insert the new insert into the prepared frame of the access ring and fix it by gluing it on both sides at the junction with the frame with super glue.

In case of damage such as a crack in the support leg or wire frame, it is better to replace the ring with a new one.

Replacing rings

Replacing rings consists of the following simple manipulations:

  • It is better to start replacing the lower large ring, gradually moving towards the top;
  • In order to remove the ring, we heat the place where it is attached to the form over a lighter until the varnish covering the fastening winding made of thin nylon thread softens;
  • Using a sharp knife, cut the winding layer parallel to the plane of the form;
  • Remove the winding and ring;
  • We clean the area from remnants of varnish, winding, and degrease;
  • Apply a little epoxy glue;
  • We install a new ring, fix it tightly, winding a nylon thread over it in even turns;
  • Apply a layer of colorless waterproof varnish on top of the thread;
  • In order to remove the last ring - the tulip - a thin wire is attached to it, heated over a candle flame, while at the same time trying to pull the ring off the top with the wire.

Spinning reel repair

Among the most common coil malfunctions and how to fix them yourself are:

  • Noise inside. Disassemble the reel, remove sand and dirt from the drive mechanism, check the bearings in the handle and spool, and replace if necessary.
  • Rotation mechanism jammed under load. Replace the drive gears with new ones;
  • The line-laying arm snaps spontaneously when casting. Tighten the screws that secure the temple. If this does not resolve the problem, replace the spring responsible for latching the shackle with a stiffer one;
  • The reverse stop does not work. It is necessary to lubricate the overrunning clutch, which is responsible for the operation of the mechanism;
  • Creak. It is necessary to add lubricant inside the reel body;
  • The fishing line gets under the front clutch nut and breaks. It is necessary to replace the thick felt gasket under the nut with a thinner plastic one.

These methods will allow you to effectively repair the reel with your own hands, eliminating serious problems, extending the life of this expensive component of spinning gear.
