We start drawing with a sketch. Study carefully and sketch on paper a line that separates the lips. The line will almost always curve up and down. The front teeth will be the lightest, the subsequent ones will be darker and darker. The gums should be made slightly darker than the lips.

Step 1. We will need more or less soft pencil, you can take HB or 2B and, lightly pressing on it, draw a contour.
Step 2. Draw the outline of the lips and define the lip areas with ovals.
Step 3. Now we shade the upper lip at the bottom. To make a continuous monochromatic tone, you need to practice a little (there is a lesson, and you can at least just watch it). Those. we apply the strokes so close that they merge, and there should be a smooth transition between the white sheet and the dark tone (the pressure on the pencil decreases, as a result of which the intensity of the strokes decreases).
Step 4. Draw a shadow under the lower lip.

We make a dark area near the tips of the lips, under the upper lip and under the lower lip, where the dark area is large and is extended by a small stripe under the lip; to see it, look at the previous picture, and then this one. Step 6. Make a dark area on the upper lip.

We shade the upper lip first with a monochromatic light tone, then on top of it we make darker areas along the upper edge of the lips, the middle part of the lip, while making a transition of the shadow so that there is no clear separation of this is a dark area, this is a light one. There should be small smooth transitions of tone. Then we stroke the lower lip from top to bottom.
Step 8. Apply another layer of shading on the left to the middle part of the lips, making a smooth transition from the bottom of the lip, i.e. Make the very bottom dark, then ease the pressure on the pencil and you get a transition. We darken it a little on the right, take an eraser and make a highlight.
Step 9. Make shadows around the mouth.
Step 10. We wipe some places with an eraser. This is the area on top of the upper lip on the left and let’s create a highlight on the right under the upper lip.

They represent the facial muscles surrounding the mouth. Mouth and lips are not just stuck on a flat face! They must be “fitted in”, not forgetting the total volumes.
These shadows are not too deep, but nevertheless they must certainly be present under the lower lip and in the corners of the mouth.
And here, pay attention to the light areas around the perimeter of the lips!
It's small, but important detail, the potretist must never forget about her.
This is the most prominent “edge” of the lips; as a rule, it stands out quite strongly and is not colored. In these places neither beard nor mustache grows, and for dark-skinned people this edge is even more noticeable.
This edge stands out most strongly when the shadows fall, in the language of pilots - at 5 o'clock (that is, the light falls from above, slightly to the left).

In the previous example, the mouth is open and the gap is white, not painted over. This was done to make it easier to understand for beginners, but it is wrong.
