Even their own children often do not live up to their parents' expectations. Therefore, when deciding to adopt, you should weigh everything.

Panel Kyiv high-rise building. Together with the owner of the two-room apartment - an attractive woman of about forty - I was warmly greeted by a long-legged hunting dog. We settle down on the sofa. “Wall” with good books - Arthur Haley, Clifford Simak, Leo Tolstoy. Lots of well-kept plants. The fluffy black cat happily lets herself be petted. Vera Anatolyevna says:

— My husband and I graduated from the Riga Aviation Institute, and according to assignment we went to Krasnoyarsk, where he is from. Our child was born there. Due to a lung disease, he died when he was one year old. Then we worked at the airport. My husband is in the technical department, I am in the planning department. One day, on New Year’s Eve, several people from our trade union committee, including me, went to an orphanage to give gifts to the kids. There were heating problems there and we were asked to take the children for a few days. This is how Sasha, whom we did not choose, ended up in our house. At this time he fell ill with pneumonia. It took us two or three weeks to get him out. And then it became so sad to bring the boy back that we thought: shouldn’t we leave him completely?

How did he touch you?

“We got used to it and thought: maybe this is the providence of the Lord?” God took our own child, and sends Sasha to us? I remember the shirt he was wearing was kind of faded. Ears stick out, hair shorn. And it’s so pathetic - it’s simply trembling. The orphanage said that nothing was known about the boy’s parents. Now I understand: we were deliberately lied to. Because later, when the question of his mental health became acute, the judge found out that his own mother suffered from chronic alcoholism. She left her son in the maternity hospital.

The adoption was finalized literally within a month. Then Sasha fell ill with pneumonia again. It turned out that lung surgery was needed. I went with him to Leningrad. The operation was successful. After that, we were advised to go to the sea, where we spent nine months.

Sasha then just had to go to first grade. But he couldn’t pronounce many letters; we went to a speech therapist for a year. To develop it, I read a lot of specialized literature, bought tests, and became interested in psychology.

The orphanage workers taught: kindness can fix a lot of things.

And you didn’t notice anything foreshadowing future troubles in his behavior then?

“From the very beginning he did not understand the word “impossible.” If you forbid it, he will still do it on the sly. In the fourth month of our stay, he started a fire by turning on the old TV, which he was forbidden to do in our absence. A lot of things burned. But this incident had no effect on him. We bought a new TV, hid the cord - he found it and turned it on.

About two years later, Sasha had a seizure - he fell, there were convulsions, but epilepsy was ruled out. At the same time, he began to run away to “his” orphanage. We began to doubt his mental health and thought: wouldn’t he be better off in an orphanage, since he wants to go there? We contacted the management of the orphanage. However, they began to put pressure on us - they say, with warmth and sincerity, a lot can be corrected. They also advised him to change his place of residence so that he would not go to an orphanage. When Sasha was 12 years old, we sold our car, garage and apartment in Krasnoyarsk and moved to Kyiv, since I am a native of this city.

How did Sasha study?

“He didn’t want to study, no matter how much I fought with him. I finished the sixth grade, but practically didn’t go to the 7th and 8th grades. They gave him grades, feeling sorry for me. During class, he could go to the window and just watch.

Many children do not want to study...

“We didn’t want to make Einstein out of him.” We don't need higher education. The main thing is to be human. And he turned out to be a thief. This is the situation that shocked me. My grandmother is dying. Naturally, there is turmoil. People must come. And Sasha, taking advantage of the general fuss, stole all the money. I just took it and went outside for a walk. He was 14 years old then. There is a dead man in the house, but there is nothing to bury him. I was lying at this child’s feet. But he never gave the money, he skipped the vending machines and gave the boys Coca-Cola to drink. My grandmother and I simply took out my soul.

One day my husband returned from a flight at four o’clock in the morning. He still had travel money for the entire brigade - about $200. I got up in the morning and there was no money. Sasha took the money and disappeared again. And there were many such cases. The computer console has disappeared. “Sasha, where is she?” - I ask. It turned out that he sold it. I did the same with my father’s bicycle and other things.

Or an episode like this. With a piece of pie in his hands, Sasha goes outside and disappears for three weeks. And then he returns, as if nothing had happened: “Hi, what should I eat?” It's like he left five minutes ago. Experts call this vagrancy syndrome.

When it’s warm, it disappears in Hydropark. It's cold - he'll stay at home. I washed myself and ate. Then he disappeared again for several weeks. Its habitats are train stations and bazaars. It was simply impossible to live with him. I explain to him that he needs to learn, but he is perplexed: why then did people build attractions?

How did you try to influence him?

— Psychologists advised him to get animals so that he would have someone to take care of. We took a puppy. But he treated Kashtan according to his mood. When he wants to play, he plays. When you don’t want to, he can kick you. Or he goes outside with the dog and returns alone... That is, he got distracted and forgot about Kashtan. And we are running around the area, searching. And you can’t blame him for this - I understand that now. He lives in a completely different world. After all, a child is formed mainly before the age of five. And we took him at seven.

Is Sasha cruel or just irresponsible?

- More like indifferent. They treat us like a consumer. We are obliged to feed and clothe. When he gets up in the morning, he may not say “hello” if he is not in the mood.

“Some days there were several commissions in our house”

And, in the end, did all this overflow your patience?

“It took us four years to collect all the documents. Some days there were several commissions in our apartment - from the district, the children's room of the police, the school. If there were grounds to deprive us of parental rights, everything would be easier to resolve, we were told. And he kept repeating one thing: I want to live freely, to make my way in life on my own. If I need parents, I will find relatives.

Everything was resolved after Sasha, returning home at night after five days of wandering, came into our bedroom with a knife. If we had not woken up, there is no telling what would have happened. He couldn't even say his name. We called an ambulance and he was taken to the hospital. He stayed there for a month and a half. Doctors diagnosed him with genetically determined psychopathy. After treatment, he was sent to a shelter and then to a boarding school. Now he is graduating from vocational school and lives in a dormitory.

In 1999, a court held that declared the adoption invalid due to Sasha’s mental state. Such a child should not have been given up for adoption at all. It was hard for me to give up Sasha. Embarrassed in front of acquaintances and friends. But I think we did the right thing. And first of all for the boy.

What feelings do you have for Sasha now?

“He brought so much grief, but I still feel sorry for him.” When I saw Sasha in November wearing only a shirt, I almost went crazy. Where are the clothes? I couldn't get the truth. Of course, he came to us, put on a sweater and jacket, filled his bags and left. I pray for him every day and hope for the best. I even notice positive changes. He doesn't steal now - at least, they haven't complained to me. Maybe he has outgrown it? When he tells me that he is being robbed in the dormitory, I ask: do you like it? He seems to be drawing conclusions. I also went to a clairvoyant. She said that he would get married at 23 and have two children. This is oil for my soul. He talks about his successes - for example, he learned how to lay tiles and saved 25 hryvnia. Now our relationship has improved. I tell him: you can follow my advice or not. He leaves and kisses you on the cheek.

Have you ever tried to have your own child?

— In 1993 they tried, they should have implanted an embryo into me. I passed all the tests and paid for the procedure. But then I thought: what if I love this child more than Sasha? I was probably afraid of myself. Because even then the problems began.

But this can be done now - modern medical technologies allow it.

“I’m not ready to bear a normal child now.” As a result of my experience, I developed eczema, and I was treated for a year. This child seemed to roll over us like a roller. Today we raised this topic again. Before your arrival, I gave a speech and suffered. If I put Sasha on the waiting list for an apartment, then maybe I’ll calm down a little.

“When I first saw my future parents, I was afraid that they wouldn’t return me to the orphanage.”

The medical report, issued at the request of Vera Anatolyevna for the court, characterized Sasha as a resourceful boy prone to deception. He didn’t seem like that to me, despite the fact that his story sometimes contradicted what Vera Anatolyevna said. Although the boy spent a significant part of his life in a prosperous environment, surrounded by books, he looked like a person from a different social environment: narrow outlook, sloppy appearance - sticking out hair that had not been combed for a long time, a dirty jacket.

Sasha, what were your first impressions of your adoptive parents?

“When they started taking me away from the orphanage for the weekend, I got scared. He was small - who knows? We were often taken from there by different people. If only children could choose their parents... They bought me things, toys - in general, they attracted my attention. I had various illnesses. They started treating me - they shouldn’t take me to the sick.

Then I was adopted, I went to kindergarten. But I didn't like it there. It turns out that they took me and give me back again. Why then do you need a child if you only see him in the morning and evening? I ran away from kindergarten when I was bored. I just didn’t want to do what was required.

When there was no one at home, I turned on the TV, even though I was forbidden - it was old and could catch fire. That’s basically what happened. I calmly went out to the neighbors - so and so, there’s something wrong with my TV. A neighbor came in and half the apartment had already burned down.

You know, my mother is nervous, because when I’m late, she starts hitting me. I cannot forgive her for this. And my father used to love me - he took me with him to the airport, where he worked as an engineer. I even flew in the cockpit of an airplane. Sometimes he will give me a belt a couple of times - and we will communicate normally after that.

“For an hour spent on the street, I’m ready to give my life”

What else do you remember?

— The only good thing, in principle, is that they bought everything for me and took care of me.

Do you think this is not enough?

“I couldn’t explain anything to my mother, I couldn’t resist her, and it was all my fault. For example, I had a daily schedule. I can’t live like this - I’m not a robot. She generally forbade me a lot, closed me off from my will. From Krasnoyarsk we moved to Kyiv. We bought an apartment here. I went to 7th grade, but again I didn’t want to study, I skipped school. I was ready to give my life for one hour that I spent on the street. The sun and all that... You can’t understand me - so why did you take it? Studying is not what I need.

And what do you want?

“Back then I didn’t really know what I liked.” I liked geography. But only when the teacher did not read from the textbook, but told how he went on a trip. I didn't like algebra at all. For example, I know what two plus two is. And the roots and all that are superfluous. The tutor my mother hired for me in this subject said that I had good abilities. I just have no desire to learn. When my mother’s grandmother died - and I was friends with her - I really let myself down. I started doing all kinds of nonsense. But not drugs, but...

Inhale glue?

- Yes. You have to try everything in life. I liked it. When I was in a bad mood, I could go and sniff glue. I get away from problems and relax.

How did you get to the hospital?

“I don’t remember what I did, where I was the whole week before. Friends say they didn’t smell the glue from me. I woke up in the hospital. They told me: you need to lie down for a month - we will give you a diagnosis.

After that, did your parents decide to break up with you?

“They told me even earlier: you still don’t go to school.” Maybe you'll go make your own life? To a boarding school, on state support. So as not to get on our nerves. I say: no problem, register.

After the hospital, my parents were afraid to take me home and sent me to an orphanage. They came to see me there. And then I began to visit, but only when my father was not there. He's against me now. He thinks I'm just as bad. Then I was sent to a boarding school. I made friends with the teachers. Not with those who work for money, but who want to do something for their children. There I learned to understand children. And not all mothers can do this. I noticed: in order for a child to listen to you, you need to squat down and talk to him like that. One more thing: for a child, what is more important is not dead toys, but, for example, the ability to plant a tree.

“I would like to get rid of my fears”

What do you dream about?

— I like country life. I would plant potatoes.

Maybe you want to run a peasant farm?

- Something like that.

What are you doing now?

— Now I’m finishing vocational school. I have an internship, I work as a helper at a construction site. Future profession: plasterer, tiler, painter. I live in a hostel. I eat in the school cafeteria. They give rations for a week for 51 hryvnia. Recently my door was knocked down and my rations were taken away. I’m trying to move to another dorm so that I can live with adults, and not with people like me. Young people need to drink almost every day. They constantly knock on the door, you can’t really get enough sleep.

What money do you live on?

— Every month I receive orphan benefits and a stipend. And in practice, I would get paid if I went to work regularly.

What would you like to change in your life?

— For example, I would like to get rid of fear. I'm afraid of conflicts and hot-tempered people. I just run away then. I already have enough adventures on my mind.

“The years Sasha spent in the family had a beneficial effect on him”

I also met with a psychologist from the vocational school where Sasha studies. This is what she told me:

- This is a big problem - the social adaptation of orphans. Unfortunately, they are often different from the rest: less educated, less accustomed to work, and often aggressive. Sasha is a very difficult boy. He has little desire to study and work. I also had to deal with Sasha’s serious misdeeds. Law enforcement agencies were going to open a criminal case against him for committing theft. He was saved by a medical report of mental illness. He underwent treatment. We are trying to help Sasha choose the right path and hope that he has a future. After all, many very difficult teenagers grow into wonderful people. A person spends his whole life rethinking his actions, learning... I think that the years Sasha spent in his family had a beneficial effect on him. For example, I didn’t hear him use foul language. Or for him to raise his voice. He helped me get on the bus and offered his hand as I entered. He still maintains a relationship with his mother. So, he didn’t become bitter. As for Sasha’s ex-mother, it is, of course, difficult to expect deep maternal feelings in this case. After all, even a mother is not always able to love her child and make great sacrifices for him. Therefore, people who decide to adopt must weigh everything carefully: do they have the strength and courage to fulfill their parental obligations, even if the child does not live up to their hopes?
