Certificate for introductory training in aircraft control

Aeroclub Vzletim invites you to fly over St. Petersburg. But not as an ordinary passenger, on whom nothing depends, but:

  • at the helm;
  • in the co-pilot's seat;

If you are already 18, have a great desire to learn how to fly an airplane and have no health restrictions, we invite you to our flying club for training in one of two introductory programs.

Certificate for a training and familiarization flight according to the program First step plus provides:

  • monitoring the pre-flight preparation of the aircraft for flight;
  • pre-flight briefings;
  • two exhilarating flights at the helm in a horizontal position.

Certificate for Airplane Training Program Above the sky will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the role of a co-pilot and learn how to fly the aircraft over four flights:

1st - horizontal flight control, altitude control, horizontal orientation;
2nd - lifting off the ground, performing climbs, snakes, small turns;
3rd - consolidation of acquired knowledge, familiarization with the elements necessary for landing (landing an airplane is the most difficult thing);
The 4th final lesson is supplemented by circling flight, practicing elements of takeoff and landing.

The programs have theoretical and practical parts. Training is conducted by experienced pilot instructors with extensive flying experience.
Training in both programs takes place on a reliable and easy

Every child probably had a dream of becoming a pilot. All of us, especially as small children, were delighted with flying on an airplane: for us it was unusual and caused incredible delight. Today, each of us can become a pilot, and for this there is no need to spend a large amount of money or undergo lengthy training.

How to become a small aircraft pilot

Any pilot, even a commercial one, must complete a small aircraft piloting course. To do this, he will need to pass the VLEK medical commission. The future pilot must meet the following parameters:

  • Weight from 48 to 110 kilograms, overweight is allowed - no more than the first stage of obesity.
  • Height is from 155 to 190 centimeters, sitting - up to 95.
  • No major injuries or surgeries in the last 6 months, and no fractures in the last few years.
  • Diseases related to the functioning of the heart, various speech defects, dystrophy or disorders in the area of the ENT organs may contribute to the fact that you are considered unsuitable for piloting.
  • Drug and alcohol addiction can also ruin your desire to become a pilot.

Also, you will be tested repeatedly for physical fitness during the medical examination and during the courses themselves. The pilot must be a strong and healthy man, whose age is from 17 to 55 years (this range may vary in different institutions).

After successfully passing the VLEK medical commission, you will be given the documents necessary for admission. You can enroll in any city where there is a flight school or piloting courses: the largest and most famous are in Ulyanovsk and St. Petersburg.

Typically, the duration of training for small aircraft pilots lasts from 3 months to two years, depending on the type of aircraft and type of training. As a rule, training consists of 150 theoretical hours and 8 hours of live flight time on an airplane, two of which take place at night.

If your primary desire is to become a commercial pilot and pilot a passenger aircraft, then after completing the small aviation pilot course, you need to complete the appropriate courses for an aircraft of a certain class.

How to become a commercial pilot

After completing the small aviation pilot course, you are provided with the appropriate documents and the opportunity to fly two-seater aircraft. If you want to continue your studies and become a passenger airline pilot, you need to find an appropriate educational institution.

Each major aviation school provides its students with the opportunity to undergo training on a specific type of aircraft. In this case, you choose which plane you want to fly on: it can be Boeing, Airbus, or any other passenger airliner.

To study, you may be required to re-pass a medical examination. The training includes 220 hours of theory and 40 hours of practical flights.

Airplane piloting basics and avionics

Each aircraft is different, but their avionics are very similar. The main control element of any aircraft is the steering wheel. This can be either the steering wheel itself or the joystick. In the case of the helm, the control is very simple and convenient: deflecting away from you lowers the nose of the plane, deflecting towards you raises it. Turning the steering wheel to the right turns it to the right, turning it to the left turns it to the left. In the case of a joystick, the controls are the same, but less convenient.

Each aircraft has a number of instruments that allow it to monitor altitude, speed and other indicators. The photo shows the digital avionics of the Soviet TU-154, but in most aircraft these are replaced by electronic monitors. All avionics are duplicated for the first and second pilot of each passenger aircraft.

  1. Vertical speed of the aircraft. This indicator reflects the aircraft's ascent speed. Necessary during takeoff to avoid sudden ascent and control the climb.
  2. The horizon displays the angle of elevation, pitch, and rotation of the aircraft. Essential for understanding the aircraft's position at high altitude.
  3. Displays the flight course of the airliner, values from 0 to 360 degrees, the course is reported to the pilot by the air traffic controller of a certain aircraft flight zone.
  4. Flight speed, often this panel displays landing speed and stall speed. Also, the red zone indicates the maximum flight speed, which is not recommended to be exceeded.
  5. Aircraft Roll—Displays the horizontal angle of the aircraft's rotation in the air and the rotation of the steering wheel on the ground.
  6. Engine and chassis control unit. Allows you to quickly start or stop engines, monitor traction and landing gear.

Every modern aircraft has a built-in computer, which makes controlling the aircraft much easier. The flight computer provides pilots with many functions: built-in terrain, location and altitude of all runways, built-in controller for thrust, fuel and engines. The computer is equipped with a full-fledged autopilot, which allows the aircraft to take off, fly and land in fully automatic mode. Also, the computer warns about breakdowns on board.

However, despite widespread technology, airlines and aircraft manufacturers still do not trust autopilot systems and continue to train new pilots. A good pilot is always more valuable than an autopilot system, because if the computer fails, someone will have to fly the plane.

Civil aviation is a unified and standardized area of human activity. National and international flights follow the same rules.

Civil aviation pilot training systems are practically the same between countries. If there is a desire and free funds, anyone can learn to fly an airplane and become a certified amateur pilot.

Pilot training: types

Training programs and requirements for acquired skills vary depending on what kind of aircraft and for what purpose the person intends to fly.

In total, there are 3 types of licenses to operate a civil aircraft (in Russia - certificates).

Table 1. Types of piloting licenses.

Type of certificate

What does it entitle you to?

CPP – private pilot certificate

PPL – private pilot license

management of private small aircraft, without making a profit

SKP - commercial pilot certificate

CPL – commercial pilot license

piloting aircraft operating commercial flights (cargo and passenger with a number of restrictions)

SLP – line pilot certificate

ATPL – airline transport pilot license

to control an aircraft performing linear flights (mass passenger transportation, including in the role of first pilot)

Recreational pilots have the opportunity to obtain a private pilot license (PPL).

Where do they learn to fly an airplane?

In Russia, aviation training centers provide training and issue certificates. As a rule, there are such centers in every region, and in some, for example, in the Moscow region, there is not even one.

Training time – from 6 months. In principle, you can learn to fly faster. But flight schools have their own standards, which do not allow, for example, flying more than 3 hours a day.

Often flight practice is limited to 1-1.5 hours. However, they don’t fly every day. Plus – theoretical lectures.

If you wish, you can study in flight schools in the USA and Europe for 6 months. There are intensive courses where the full training program can be completed in 3-6 weeks. During the intensive course they fly for 3-6 hours every day. It is believed that daily practice allows you to learn to fly faster and more efficiently.

How is training to fly an airplane carried out?

In order to learn to fly, you need to master two courses: theory and practice.

Thematic courses are taught in specialized training centers. Some information can be gleaned from textbooks. Features of the aircraft design and its flight characteristics are contained in the operational manual.

Theoretical pilot course

The pilot must understand the following theoretical aspects:

  • aerodynamic elements;
  • structure and design features of the aircraft;
  • operation of on-board equipment;
  • aviation meteorology;
  • aircraft navigation;
  • training in pilot control slang.

What a person taking the course should know and what skills should they learn:

  • know the basics of aircraft control;
  • know the characteristics and operational limitations of a particular aircraft type;
  • be able to calculate the center of gravity of an aircraft;
  • be able to calculate the effect of loading on flight characteristics;
  • have route planning skills;
  • have an understanding of the principles of controlling probabilistic threats and human errors;
  • have an idea of the algorithm of actions in an emergency situation;
  • understand and analyze weather reports;
  • be able to use aeronautical maps;
  • know aviation codes and abbreviations;
  • possess the skill of conducting dialogue with dispatchers.

In reality, all of the above is not as complicated as it might seem at first glance. Despite the fact that the course is theoretical, the information provided is of a purely practical nature.

All this knowledge and skills are tied to a specific aircraft. Those. The theory is given in a limited and dosed manner, without loading students with unnecessary information.

The essence of theoretical studies is not for a person to know everything about aerodynamics at the level of an engineering university, but for him to have basic information that will make the behavior of the aircraft clear to him in certain conditions.

Practical pilot course

Practical classes take place in parallel with the theoretical course. On the first flights, the aircraft is controlled by an instructor, the student observes and acts as a co-pilot. During a certain flight, the instructor and the future pilot change places. At this stage, the student takes on the function of an aircraft commander, and the instructor prompts, corrects, and insures him against incorrect actions.

In addition to flying during the day, you must learn to fly at night, using instruments, in the absence of visual references, and be able to overcome a long flight with several landings.

As can be seen from the table above, flight requirements for pilot training in the United States are more stringent: they require a greater number of flights at night, including one long flight, 3 hours of flight time in the absence of visual references, and the passage of one route with 3 takeoffs/landings on different airfields.

It should be noted that the flight hours requirements given are minimum. Nothing prevents schools from increasing the duration of training, including flight practice, if there are reasons for this (for example, because a person is slow to master the technique).

In particular, some American flight schools offer intensive three-week pilot training courses with 60 hours of flight time. At the same time, each week accounts for 20 hours in the air, which for daily flights is an average of 3 hours a day.

Upon completion of training, pilots pass a theoretical exam and perform a control flight. If the results are satisfactory, the aviation training center issues the applicant a Private Pilot Certificate.

What does a Private Pilot License entitle you to?

A private pilot license holder has the right to:

  • Fly within the borders of the country that issued the certificate on a certain type of aircraft (the one on which the training took place).
  • Quickly retrain to fly other types of aircraft.
  • By confirming your Certificate abroad (by passing exams without training), you can obtain a license to pilot in any chosen country.

All civil aviation certificates issued in the world are standardized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This means that they are an international license to fly private jets.

How much does it cost to learn to fly an airplane?

The cost of training depends on the aviation school and the type of aircraft used. In Russia, you can learn to fly an airplane for $7,000-$8,000 thousand (500 thousand rubles).

There are cheaper schools in the USA and Europe. However, travel costs, accommodation costs, a visa and a mandatory language exam will bring the total cost of training closer to $8,000-$10,000, and possibly exceed this value.

At the same time, American education is traditionally considered the best. At least from an organizational point of view.

What if I want to fly big planes?

You can learn commercial or line piloting in Russia at specialized higher educational institutions by completing a full 5-year course.

In Europe and the USA this is easier. In 8 months You can get a commercial pilot's license. In 12 months – become a real line flight pilot with the right to control large passenger airliners. The cost of such courses starts from $50,000.

The first one is introductory. Typically consists of one demonstration flight with an instructor, during which the novice becomes familiar with the work of a pilot and also gains an understanding of how flights are organized, supported and executed. Demonstration flights can be carried out using three types of exercises:
1) flight in a circle (flight altitude - 300 m; flight duration - 5-6 minutes);
2) flight to the zone (flight altitude - 300-900m; flight duration - 10-25 minutes);
3) flight along the route (flight altitude - 150-300m; flight duration - 30-60 minutes).

The second stage is pre-flight preparation. Any flight requires serious preparation on the ground. Pre-flight preparation includes a whole range of activities, such as plotting a route using an aviation map, studying the flight area and the features of working with heading instruments and radio navigation points, as well as drawing up a radio communication plan and much more. Particular attention is paid to pre-flight training of pilots during complex and aerobatics flights. Future pilots, under the guidance of instructors, carefully develop a flight plan and practice the technique of performing maneuvers in accordance with the flight training course.

At the same time, at all stages of training, piloting techniques, the sequence and correctness of performing complex and aerobatic maneuvers are practiced on the ground, on special simulators that convey the situation and sensations of flight with a high degree of reliability. Simulator training also allows future pilots to master the elements of navigation and instrument flight techniques in difficult weather conditions and lack of direct visibility of the surrounding terrain. Carefully completed pre-flight preparation is a guarantee of success during the flight mission.

The third stage is flight training. After pilot candidates have completed the theoretical training necessary to successfully master aviation technology and flight rules, they can proceed directly to the flights themselves. In the sky, amateur pilots will consolidate the knowledge acquired on the ground and independently perform the following flights: in a circle; to the zone to perform simple aerobatics; along the route visually and using RTS. Everyone who successfully completes the full course of flight training is issued an international certificate for the right to fly an aircraft.

As for prices, for example, one hour of flight time on a single-engine aircraft with a piston engine varies in Moscow clubs from $100 to $400. Accordingly, a full course (42 hours) of flight training will cost approximately $4000-16000.
