The book includes a novel in verse by A.S. Pushkin (1799–1837) “Eugene Onegin,” which is required reading and study in secondary schools.

The novel in verse "Eugene Onegin" is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian classical literature. Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin devoted more than seven years to this work. While working on the novel, the author abandoned the romantic literary movement and turned to realism. Thus, “Eugene Onegin” became the first realistic novel in Russian literature.

The time frame of the work is from 1819 to 1825. Main character- the young nobleman Eugene goes to his uncle, who is lying on the verge of death. Evgeniy received home education and was raised by French tutors. The young man led an idle life, like other aristocrats: he danced at balls, visited theaters and often went for walks. But social life quickly became boring for the young burner.

Evgeniy's father dies, leaving only debts. Evgeniy transfers his fortune to lenders. He hopes to receive an inheritance from his uncle. His calculation is correct: having arrived in the village, he learns about the death of a relative. His uncle bequeathed to him his lands, estates and factories.

Life in the village brings Evgeni the blues. His neighbors consider him an eccentric because of the way he manages the estate. New owner replaces corvee with quitrent for peasants. Evgeny himself does not show courtesy towards his current environment.

The hero has a new neighbor. Young Vladimir Lensky arrives from Germany to his native estate. He is simple-minded, naive and believes in love and holiness. He does not take part in the life of the village.

Evgeny and Vladimir find mutual language. Cynical Onegin listens to his friend’s stories with a smile. He is amused by Lensky's spontaneity. Vladimir willingly talks about his life and mentions Olga, whom he loves dearly.

Olga comes from the venerable Larin family. She is beautiful, blond and meets recognized standards of beauty. Her older sister Tatyana is the opposite of Olga. She is quiet, thoughtful and loves to sit by the window and read novels.

Evgeniy and Vladimir pay a visit to the Larins. Having assessed the sisters, Onegin openly expresses his opinion: Olga is mediocre. He himself would have paid attention to his older sister Tatyana.

Young, trusting Tatyana thinks about Evgeniy. In her imagination, Onegin appears as an alluring hero. Her soul is deprived of peace and strives for a young nobleman. Tatyana writes a letter in which she openly admits her feelings. Her language is simple, naive and melodic. The girl does not think about possible gossip and other dangers.

In the novel, Alexander Pushkin poses the problem of society and personality. Evgeniy grew up in a noble environment and has numerous opportunities. But society does not allow him to open up. The hero withdraws into himself and turns into an egoist. It's sharpening him soul emptiness. He does not find himself among the nobles; work does not bring pleasure. The idealist Lensky is also superfluous in his circle. These characters are extraordinary personalities, attracted to each other.

Tatyana Larina is Pushkin’s favorite image. Tatyana is the embodiment of openness and morality, duty and will. But using her example, the author shows how high society poisons and breaks youth. Falsehood, intrigue, and gossip entangle the heroes and ruin their destinies.

The novel “Eugene Onegin” shows that fatal mistakes are made not only by the characters, but also by the environment. Society supports the serfdom and cultivates callous landowners, destroying the inclinations of nobility and sensitivity. While studying at school, many works are studied that have become masterpieces of Russian and world classics. However, many of them, when read later, are understood differently, more deeply comprehended. The novel in verse by A. S. Pushkin “Eugene Onegin” is popular because it is perceived differently at every age. You begin to see everything that was missed at school.

The plot of the novel is familiar to many, at least everyone has heard about the complex relationships and romantic experiences of Onegin and Tatyana. Tatyana was not like other girls who love to embroider and spend evenings at balls. She was quiet, calm and a little aloof. But at the same time she was quite wise for her age. She, like any girl, wanted pure and sincere love. Could she not fall in love with Onegin, who was older than her, more experienced, and also handsome and well-off? Only Eugene was not as serious as he would have liked, although you wouldn’t call him an inveterate scoundrel.

In this poetic novel, of course, one can highlight not only love line. The theme of friendship and devotion, trust, as well as justice is touched upon here. Perhaps even a theme of fate. The work at first glance seems simple and understandable, but if you find connections between some events, compare facts, see some signs and implications, then it becomes clear that it is much deeper than just romantic story about two people, as it seemed at school.

Quotes from the book “Eugene Onegin” by Alexander Pushkin

How smaller woman we love,
The easier it is for her to like us
And the more likely we destroy her
Among seductive networks.

So, she was called Tatyana.
Not your sister's beauty,
Nor the freshness of her ruddy
She wouldn't attract anyone's attention.
Dick, sad, silent,
Like a forest deer, timid,
She is in her own family
The girl seemed like a stranger.
She didn't know how to caress
To your father, nor to your mother;
Child herself, in a crowd of children
I didn’t want to play or jump
And often alone all day
She sat silently by the window.

He who lived and thought cannot
Do not despise people in your heart;
Whoever felt it is worried
Ghost of irrevocable days:
There's no charm for that
That serpent of memories
He is gnawing at remorse.

Whom to love? Who to believe?
Who won't cheat on us alone?
Who measures all deeds and all speeches?
Helpfully to our arshin?
Who doesn’t sow slander about us?
Who cares for us?
Who cares about our vice?
Who never gets bored?
A vain seeker of a ghost,
Without wasting your labors in vain,
Love yourself
My honorable reader!
Worthy item: nothing
There is probably no one more kind than him.

We all learned a little bit
Something and somehow
So upbringing, thank God,
It's no wonder for us to shine.

O people! you all look alike
To the ancestor Eva:
What is given to you does not entail;
The serpent is constantly calling you
To yourself, to the mysterious tree;
Give me the forbidden fruit,
And without that, heaven is not heaven for you.

Always modest, always obedient,
Always cheerful like the morning,
How a poet's life is simple-minded,
How sweet is love's kiss,
Eyes like the sky blue;
Smile, flaxen curls,
Movements, voice, light stance -
Everything in Olga... but any novel
Take it and you will find it, right,
Her portrait: he is very cute,
I used to love him myself,
But he bored me immensely.
Allow me, my reader,
Take care of your older sister.

Moscow... so much in this sound
For the Russian heart it has merged!
How much resonated with him!

How often in sorrowful separation,
In my wandering destiny,
Moscow, I was thinking about you!
Moscow... so much in this sound
For the Russian heart it has merged!
How much resonated with him!

The less we love a woman,
The easier it is for her to like us
And the more likely we destroy her
Among seductive networks.
Debauchery used to be cold-blooded
Science was famous for love,
Trumpeting about myself everywhere
And enjoying without loving.
But this is important fun
Worthy of old monkeys
Grandfather's vaunted times:
Lovlasov's fame has faded
With the glory of red heels
And stately wigs.
