The history of the Ottawan group began in 1979, when French producer Daniel Vangard, while visiting a Parisian bar, drew attention to the performing talent of Pat, the lead singer of the group performing that evening. Pat (real name Jean-Baptiste Patrick) was originally from the Caribbean territories of France and came to Paris, driven by a dream of conquest musical Olympus. Wig (Jean Patrick) was born on April 6, 1954, Martinique, France).
Daniel Vangar with another famous producer Jean Kluger invited Pat to become a member of the new music project in disco style. The group, which at that time did not yet have a name, also invited dancer and vocalist Anette (born November 1, 1958). His first single “D.I.S.C.O.” Pat and Anette recorded in October 1979 in the Canadian city of Ottawa, hence the name of the group "Ottawan" was born. New project expected resounding success, both in their homeland and abroad.
"Ottawan" with original performer Pat in its lineup still performs around the world with a program of famous hits from 1979-1981.
In the UK "D.I.S.C.O." rose to number two in September 1980; "Hands Up" reached number three about a year later.
In France, their song “You"re OK" (French: "T"es OK") is one of the 50 best-selling songs of all time.
In 1982, Jean Patrick left the group and formed a new duet, Pam "n Pat, with whom he recorded two more Eurodisco hits, "To Be Superman" and "It"s all music."

The remaining musicians, together with Anetta, formed the group “Bisquitte”, and released the compositions “Zoo zoo” and “Roller Boogie” in the same 1982.
The story of the Ottawan group could have ended there, but later Jean Patrick revived Ottawan and recruited new musicians who still perform under the name Ottawan.
Since their first tour in Russia in the mid-nineties, the Ottawan group with lead singer Jean-Baptiste Patrick has held hundreds of performances in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other CIS countries, and also took part in many famous festivals shown on central television channels.

Interesting facts: The name of the group Ottawan comes from the words “from Ottawa”. In Ottawa, in 1979, the very first composition of this group, D.I.S.C.O., was recorded.
"Hands Up" became a #1 hit on the New Zealand charts during 1982, staying there for 8 weeks.
The songs D.I.S.C.O., You"re OK! and Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart) were also recorded in French under the names D.I.S.C.O., T"es OK! and Haut Les Mains (Donne Moi Ton Coeur).
The song "You"re OK" with modifications was used in the Indian film "Disco Dancer".

The future lead singer of the Ottawan group, Jean-Baptiste Patrick, was born in 1954 on the island of Guadeloupe. As a child, he sang in the church choir. After defending his diploma, he moved to Paris, intending to develop his musical career. After getting a job at Air France, Pat founded group Black Underground, which performed in Parisian bars. During one of these performances, Pat drew attention music producer Daniel Vangar, also known for working together with Dalida, "The Gibson Brothers", "Sheila B. & Devotion".

Vangar, together with composer Jean Kluger, invited Pat to take part in a new musical disco project. The group, which at that time did not yet have a name, also invited dancer and vocalist Anette. When choosing a name for a new project, the producer blindly opened a world map... and ended up in the capital of Canada, Ottawa. All you have to do is add one letter at the end - and the name is ready!

The first single "D.I.S.C.O.", released by the new duo in 1980, becomes extremely popular in France, and English version conquers one European country after another. In April 1980, "D.I.S.C.O." enters the charts in Germany and stays there for 34 weeks, reaching position No. 2, and then returns in August for more than 10 weeks, becoming one of the best-selling singles in Germany. In the UK, the single entered the charts in September 1980 and stayed there for 18 weeks, also taking second place in sales.

In the same 1980, another Ottawan hit, “T”es OK,” became No. 1 in France so quickly that its English version, “You”re OK,” was immediately recorded, which was distributed throughout Europe. Starting in July 1980, "You"re OK" stayed at the top of the European charts for 20 weeks and took 5th place in sales for the year. Even Boney M, the kings of German disco, and the enigmatic Amanda Lear were left far behind And in December 1980, "You"re OK" triumphantly took leading positions in the UK charts for 6 weeks.

On the wave of success, the Ottawan group releases the album "D.I.S.C.O." (1980), which, in addition to the song of the same name and the hit “T” es OK,” included such tracks as “Hello Rio!”, “Shalala song” (a remake of the popular Spanish-language composition “Un rayo de sol”), “Help, get me some help! " and etc.

In 1981, the new single "Haut les mains" brought the group even greater popularity, which immediately spread throughout all discos in France and brought the song to first place in the national charts. Version on English language"Hands up" reached incredible levels of popularity. Since April 6, 1981, "Hands up" has remained in the charts for 42 weeks and is number 1 in sales for 1981 in Germany - the first time in the history of French pop music. The single "Hands up" reached popularity in the UK by August 1981, rising to number 3, where it remained for 15 weeks.

The triumph continued... Despite the fact that other French disco artists did not do very well, Ottawan again achieved great success with the single "Crazy music" in France and Germany, which spent more than 11 weeks at the top of the charts.

Both compositions - "Hands up" and "Crazy music" - can be heard on the group's second long-playing album, "Ottawan 2" (1981). In addition to European countries, this disc was also published in the USSR, by the Melodiya company.

At the end of 1981, Patrick, while continuing to work in Ottawan, organized his own side project "Pam "n Pat" and published the single "To be Superman", very reminiscent in style of Ottawan hits. However, soon the creative and romantic union of Patrick and Annette cracked due to the singer’s disgusting character and her excessive commercialism, after parting with his lover, Patrick closes the side project and focuses entirely on Ottawan. Anette’s place in the new line-up of the group was taken by singer Tamara.

Subsequently, Patrick changed his partners several more times, with whom he different years were a native of Martinique, Christine Anne-Rose Manne, his cousin Caroline Ann Coudaire, Isabelle Yapi, Linda and others. But, despite the ongoing leapfrog with line-up changes, the duo managed to maintain their individuality and continue to tour around the world. around the world, performing famous hits from the period 1979-1981.

In 2003, Ottawan performed in Moscow at the Melodies and Rhythms festival foreign stage in Russian." From the stage of the State Kremlin Palace, Pat and Carolina performed the hits "Hands up (gime me your heart)", "A.I.E. is my song" (together with Arkady Ukupnik and Pelageya) and "Сrazy Music" (together with the choir of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Russian Federation under the direction of Viktor Eliseev). In 2002, 2003 and 2008, Ottawan, consisting of Pat and Caroline, participated in international festival"Disco of the 80s", organized in Moscow and St. Petersburg under the auspices of one of the leading Russian radio stations - Avtoradio.

29th of November. The first frosts hit. But the Ottawan French don't care. Stretching as if after a siesta, they appeared in the lobby of the second floor of the hotel to satisfy the curiosity of journalists before their concert. Jean-Baptiste Patrick is a cheerful, fit gentleman of about forty-five years old, who cannot be considered 58 years old. And the mysterious beauty Isabelle Yapi, about whom there is practically no information on the Internet, except that she has been in Ottawan since 2010. Pat always smiled, joked, laughed. Sometimes he overplayed his hand in complimenting the overly timid sharks of his pen. But everyone immediately fell in love with him. Isabelle was charmingly sweet, moderately witty and felt absolutely no embarrassment.
Having overcome the first wave of awkwardness, we began.

Jean-Baptiste PATRICK: Hello! My name is Michael Jackson! ( general laughter in the hall). Does anyone speak French? ( speaks Russian) A bit? No?

Everyone takes their seats.

ZhBP: Hello, my name is Patrick "Ottavan"...

Isabelle YAPI: Isabel...

ZhBP: And our manager Ilyana. Your first question.

Correspondent Konstantin SEDEGOV: Monsieur Patrick, you haven’t been performing with Isabelle for very long. Introduce your companion in more detail.

ZhBP: This is very beautiful girl, whom I have known for three years now. Now I get very worried when I sometimes leave her. Because it works very well. She has a very beautiful smile, as you can see. And we feel very good together.

Correspondent: Monsieur Patrick, how were you received in our city, what were your impressions?

ZhBP: I've already been to Perm twice. We met with Vladimir in Moscow, and he invited us to Kudymkar.

Corr. KS: You came to us together, and big concerts how many of you travel? What kind of line-up do you have at “Disco of the 80s”, for example?

ZhBP: It depends on the concert. There may be two people, or there may be four or five.

Corr. KS: Wikipedia claims that at the beginning of your career you started working for Air France. But when you become famous, does the airline provide you with any discounts? Maybe you flew for free this time?

Isabelle laughs

ZhBP: Of course, I have privileges since I travel very often. And I meet my former colleagues. After military service I returned to Air France, I spent eight years there. But always (at this time I already had my own musical group) we performed. And so, this is the career I have now. Eight years later, I met my producer and the Ottawa duo was born... Voila!

Correspondent Snezhana PASTUKHOVA: How did you agree to come to such Small town like Kudymkar? Than you Vladimir ( Vladimir Ivanovich Lopatin, organizer of the concert in Kudymkar, approx. KS) took it and invited? The fact is that some stars believe that the town is small, only 30 thousand inhabitants. But you have arrived and will perform with us.

ZhBP: I want to tell you one thing, madam. We have no boundaries. Big or small... Fans are fans. If we are invited to a country where ten people live, we will come there. Our greatest pleasure is meeting people who love us.

Corr. KS: So, there is no place where you would refuse to perform?

ZhBP: No. If only there was war... It seems to me that I was on a world tour, in almost every country in the world. For example, I sang in Lebanon when the war was going on. But I wouldn't agree a second time. Because it’s still very dangerous. In any other case, we have no boundaries. Wherever we are invited, we will come.

Corr. KS: And how far did you go to Russia to the east?

ZhBP: Vladivostok...

AND I: Kamchatka…

ZhBP: Norilsk, Noyabrsk... not even just the east, but the north, south and west - Kaliningrad. Travel can be hard, but the most main value, that if they invite us, it means they want to see us.

Corr. SP: We had a sad experience in the 90s, when our people came, Russian artists, turned out to be fake. So, many of us were worried that you, too, who were not real, would come! Have you heard about your doubles, how to deal with it?

ZhBP: You can touch me, I'm real!

General laughter.

Corr. SP: Are “live” performances a principle?

ZhBP: We, of course, perform live, but for this we need to sleep, for our voices.

Corr. SP: Did you get enough sleep?

ZhBP snores as a joke in response

Corr. KS: Isabel, do you have any musical education? Maybe you play some kind of musical instrument?

Ilyana: Isabelle also speaks Russian, so she can answer you in Russian.

AND I ( in pure Russian): Yes, I have a musical education, but with musical instruments I'm not really ( laughs). It's better with a voice.

Corr.: Where were you born, Isabel? Here or in France?

AND I: I was born here, but then I went back and forth...

Corr. KS: Monsieur Patrick, which of the “old guard” musicians do you know, communicate with, and are friends with? And, in particular, are you familiar with Bob Marley?

ZhBP: You know, in this profession we are like one little family. There are a lot of artists now, more than there were when I started. I met James Brown, Janet Jackson ( Michael Jackson's sister - approx. KS), Jamiroquay, and many. Because this is an international profession, and we enter on the same stages, and become friends, and then contact each other. And Bob Marley? Bellisimo... I sang with him once and Peter Tosh ( one of the most popular and influential reggae performers of the 1960s and 70s, - KS note).

Corr. How do you feel about Russian culture, and were there songs in Russian in your repertoire before?

ZhBP: When I first came to Russia, people were not as smiling as they are now. People had very sad faces. I adore Russian culture. We can say that we are very close to each other - Russia and France. It's great.

Corr.: When did you first come to Russia?

ZhBP: Oh, I'm afraid to say. We have heard a lot about Russia. But I still came, despite the impressions we had about Russia and the Soviet Union. I hoped you would stop being sad, and the revolution happened very quickly. In any case, I'm very happy for you.

Corr. KS: Home for a touring artist is an abstract concept. But, Monsieur Patrick and Isabelle, what is home to you?

ZhBP: Home is family. Eat different types the warmth that an artist receives from life. On stage from fans, from journalists at a press conference, and, of course, at home. I'm in last time I spent two days at home after the previous concert, and I’m already here. Tomorrow I'm returning home, and next Wednesday I'm in Moscow for the next concert. And after that I will return home only in January. This profession is very difficult, but very pleasant.

AND I: I also go to concerts more often, and I also miss my family.

ZhBP: We live in hotels more than at home. When we return home, we lock the doors...

Corr. KS: ...turn on silence...

ZhBP: Yes Yes!

Corr. SP: What, besides the energy from the audience, keeps you in shape?

ZhPB: The point is that we love what we do. You know we're lucky to do Good work. We have some freedom, joy, and are surrounded by people who love us. We travel, change countries, change cultures. Every time we meet something new. Culture, dialects. We often try some new dishes. We have pleasant encounters in our lives. I know that the next time I come to Kudymkar, we will talk about our last meeting. Perhaps then all your hair will already be white ( laughs).

Corr. KS: I would like to know what sport you like. Maybe during your rare leisure hours you do something yourself?

ZhBP: Oooh... I'm riding my ATV.

AND I: And I'm watching TV!

ZhBP: No, I'm actually joking. It's more difficult in winter. But when I'm at home in Spain, I ride my bike. Scooter, boat, sea, fishing, and discos, dancing! In winter, life somehow slows down. We are returning home.

AND I: I don't really like sports as a sport. Sometimes a pool, sometimes ice skates. Most of all I love dancing, they replace me physical exercise, which are sometimes missing.

Corr. KS: A little personal question: what phone do you use? Has the iPhone craze reached you?

AND I: I don’t have an iPhone, I have a Samsung, I don’t like it without buttons!

ZhBP: iPhone. Fifth. It's very simple. Tek-tek-tek... ( shows the set on the touch screen of a white iPhone). On the previous phone you had to press a lot of buttons to get: “Patrick”. But here everything is simple - tek-tek-tek! Voila!

Corr. KS: Do you drive a car? Which one, if so?

AND I: He ( Patrick - approx. KS) crazy! Drives a car...

ZhBP: Yesterday I drove three hundred kilometers in an hour and forty. We must tell the story of our arrival. Everything was very difficult. Yesterday I had lunch at a restaurant. Three hundred kilometers from the airport. It was already one o'clock in the afternoon, and my plane was due to take off at six. Usually it takes me two and a half hours to get to the airport safely. But Aeroflot canceled our flight. They offered to catch the plane that flies earlier, at four twenty. I was afraid of missing the connection in Moscow, so I replied that it would not be easy, but I would be on time. I took my Jaguar and drove off. I arrived on time and here I am!

Ilyana: And I was afraid to call him, since he was really driving at a speed of 230 km/h. It's horrible.

ZhBP: The journey took about forty hours. And at the airport they didn’t find a visa in my passport. There are so many visas in my passport that they couldn’t find them. But then she was finally found, yup! I love my job very much.

But it's time for us to finish, I want to say thanks a lot that you invited me here. Take a photo - a thousand dollars!( laughs) No, I'm kidding - please!

Thank you Ottawan!

OTTAWAN TODAY

FROM THE HISTORY OF THE GROUP

The popular '80s duo of producers and songwriters Daniel Vangar and Jean Kluger originally included Jean Patrick and Caroline Annette as the main lyricists and melodies. The most famous were their hits "D.I.S.C.O." (1980) and "Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart)".

In 1981, the group decided to go on tour, but with Jean Patrick and Anetta this was impossible since they were in the studio, and it would not be possible to work daily “live” two-hour concerts.

In 1982, Jean Patrick and Anetta were forced to leave the group forever and organize a new duet, which they called: Pam n Pat, and with which they later recorded two more hits in the style of the same Eurodisco, To Be Superman and It's all music, which did not OTTAWAN songs have gained popularity.

Jean Patrick was forced to turn to the previous producers with a request to perform the songs of the OTTOWAN group, but this duo never received from the owners of the songs and the brand the official rights to studio and concert performances of the hits of the OTTOWAN group. After which Jean Patrick left the musical project, and the remaining musicians, together with Anetta, formed the group Bisquitte, and released the compositions Zoo zoo and Roller Boogie in the same 1982.

The story of the OTTAWAN group could have ended there, but already in 1984, Daniel Vangar and Jean Kluger revived OTTAWAN, and invited new talented musicians- Esther and Robert (Maria Hendrika Esther and Clarence Robert Walker), who still perform under the original name OTTAWAN and perform best songs groups.

In 2002, ex-vocalist Jean Patrick recorded (under the name Ottman Jones) an album that included both modern remixes of old hits and completely new compositions, but still does not have official rights to the OTTAWAN brand and the concert use of the songs of the OTTAWAN duet. Only as OTT O WAN as evidenced by its registration of rights
