Armenians. Anthropological characteristics

Every nationality has characteristics that make it different from others. The Armenian profile is what you pay attention to when you see representatives of Ararat. Armenians are distinguished not only by their prominent nose, but also by their dark skin, large and deep dark eyes, a special outline of their lips, and black eyebrows that can meet on the bridge of the nose. Needless to say, the appearance of Armenians is very bright and memorable.

Origin of Armenians

In order to understand why Armenians have such a nose structure, it is necessary to understand who their ancestors were and what nationalities they came from. Armenian people- ancient. He speaks Armenian and belongs to the Indo-European language layer. The formation of this nation began from the end of the second millennium BC and ended in the sixth century BC.

There are at least five mythical legends (Armenian, Greek, Georgian, Arabic, Hebrew) that put forward different versions of the origin of the Armenians. According to historians, the most plausible and proven fact is that they belong to the Indo-European people, from which the Armenians subsequently separated. The formation of the nationality took place in two stages. The first is the period of unification of clans and early state formation (3-2 millennium BC). The second stage is the creation of a unified statehood on the territory of the Armenian Highlands (5-4 millennium BC).

Features of the structure of the nose

Why do Armenians care about this issue? Not only the Armenians themselves, but also representatives of other nationalities. From the point of view of medicine and the anatomical and physiological characteristics of the respiratory system, a nose with a hump is a defect in which the upper part has an uneven contour with a pronounced protrusion above the back. The hill-like growth consists of cartilage and bone tissue. Among the nationalities that have a similar nose structure are not only Armenians, but also Georgians, Turks, Greeks, Azerbaijanis, French, Italians and others. It should be noted that for them a protruding hump on the nose is the norm, but for people of the Caucasian race it is a serious psychological problem and an aesthetic defect.

A hooked nose is a typical feature of Armenians. It is not a characteristic distinguishing feature of the Slavs, although it is quite common among Europeans. The Armenian nose has distinctive features and is characterized by clear, defined lines. In profile, the nose drops at the base, and the hump is clearly visible.

Cause

According to scientific research, the Armenian nose has an objective reason for this structure. It lies in natural and climatic conditions. At an altitude of three thousand meters above sea level it is required easy breath, which provides a large nose. That is why the respiratory functions of mountain residents are better developed than those of people living on the plains. The reason for the large nose is the “mountain factor”, the features of the landscape of Armenia. This factor influenced genetic changes. For example, Asians have narrow eyes, the structure of which is determined by life in the desert and on flat terrain (wind, hurricanes, sandstorms).

National distinction

The large Armenian nose, in fact, is not so common even among purebred Armenians. It is strikingly different in shape from the nose of Georgians, Azerbaijanis, and Dagestanis. The nose of Armenians is large, spade-shaped and with a thickened step-shaped hump. Many consider this profile to be a true national treasure, a legacy of ancient Urartu. There is a joke among Armenians: if you cut off the nose, the Armenian will fall on his back, losing his balance.

Appearance of Armenians

What do purebred Armenians look like? The typical Armenian appearance differs from other Caucasian peoples. It is typical for Armenians, but this is not the rule. Quite often among them there are fair-skinned, blue-eyed, with dark brown or black hair. Among these mountain dwellers you can see representatives of Celtic appearance: red hair, freckles on the face, white skin, blue or brown eyes.

Men

Of course, not all representatives of Armenians have an outstanding profile, but the expression “Armenian nose” is known to many and is widespread. It is not difficult to identify a prominent representative of the Armenian people. Firstly, Armenian men, like women, have deep-set black or brown eyes with a sad look in their gaze. Sometimes there are gray-eyed, green-eyed and blue-eyed Armenians. Secondly, they differ from Europeans in their dark skin color. Men, like women, have thick black hair that can meet at the bridge of the nose.

The male nose in overwhelming cases differs from the female nose in structure and size. It is longer, wider, and the hump protrudes more, maybe stepped. The Armenian profile is the calling card of the Caucasian people, so men carry it proudly, like the flag of their homeland.

Women

Armenian girls are bright oriental beauties. The appearance of Armenian women is varied. Most ladies have brown eyes, chestnut or ash-black curls. Often among Armenian women there are gray-eyed, green-eyed, blue-eyed girls with red and blond hair.

You can recognize an Armenian girl by her elongated face and nose, which is somewhat elongated, its tip is downward, and there is a pronounced hump on the bridge of the nose. Of course, appearance depends on genetics, which is why among the fair sex there are owners of small, graceful noses.

Disadvantage or advantage?

Most often, girls are dissatisfied with their Armenian profile. Unfortunately, a large nose can ruin even the most pretty face. That's why today is like this high percent plastic surgery (rhinoplasty) among women. Plastic surgeons They approach the correction of the shape of the nose not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also for the purpose of health safety. There is an opinion that nature does not make mistakes. If the nose is long and wide, then other facial features should be large. In this case, it looks harmonious from the front.

Armenian girls are representatives of an imperfect profile. It is impossible to consider it a disadvantage, since this characteristic feature distinguishes them from other nations. In addition, among Armenian women there are many pretty women with a nose that suits them very well and emphasizes their unique appearance and character. A small hump on the bridge of the nose only adorns the oriental beauty. If the nose protrudes too much and visually spoils the beautiful facial features, its shape and length can be changed by rhinoplasty, which is very popular among Armenian women.

A few tricks

Correcting the shape of your nose is easy with the right hairstyle and makeup. If makeup artists advise applying a dark tone to the middle, and tinting the sides with a light shade of cream. If the nose is long, blend a dark shade at the tip and tint the wings of the nose with a light shade. Makeup artists recommend making a bright and rich emphasis on the eyes or lips, then the problem with an outstanding profile will be solved. Facial features and beautifully styled hair will balance.

Armenian women have naturally thick and shiny hair, which will visually help solve the problem with the shape of the nose. Stylists advise wearing fluffy hair, but it should not be straight, but curled. Large curls and a fluffy hairstyle adjust the length of the nose. You should avoid thick long bangs, which only emphasize the profile.

Men, on the contrary, are proud of their “eagle” profile. Unlike beautiful ladies, they consider it a dignity, a national treasure that was inherited from their ancestors. Today, the stronger sex also resorts to rhinoplasty if there are medical indications or if they want positive changes in appearance.

Many famous Armenians of our time, artists and public figures are forced to resort to surgery for aesthetic purposes, for example, to look better on the screen and to make their face pretty and harmonious. There is nothing wrong with this if surgery improves the shape of the nose and does not ruin it. The main thing is not to lose your individuality.

Famous people

Many famous Armenians have the typical appearance of their nation. Among them are actors Frunzik Mkrtchyan, Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, Sos Sargsyan, composer Arno Babajanyan, as well as popular TV presenter Mikhail Galustyan, American singer and actress Cher, celebrity Kim Kardashian, actor and screenwriter Tigran Keosayan, journalist Hmayak Hakobyan - circus performer, actor. Irina Allegrova, a singer, Vyacheslav Dobrynin, a singer, Evgeny Petrosyan, an actor, comedian, and many others also have Armenian roots.

Scientists have been arguing for decades about what a Russian person looks like. They study genetic types, physical features, papillary patterns, and even hematological features of blood groups. Some conclude that the ancestors of Russians are Slavs, others argue that Finns are closest to Russians in genotype and phenotype. So where is the truth and what anthropological portrait does the Russian person have?

The first descriptions of the appearance of Russian people

Since ancient times, people have been interested in the origins of the human race, and attempts to explore this area have been made repeatedly. Ancient records of travelers and scientists who noted their observations in detail have been preserved. There are also records in the archives about Russian people, their external and behavioral characteristics. The statements of foreigners are especially interesting. In 992, Ibn Fadlan, a traveler from Arab countries, described the perfect body and attractive appearance of the Russians. In his opinion, Russians “... are blond, red in face and white in body.”

Marco Polo admired the beauty of Russians, speaking of them in his memoirs as simple-minded and very beautiful people, with hair white.

The records of another traveler, Pavel Alepsky, have also been preserved. According to his impressions of the Russian family, there are more than 10 children with “white hair on their heads” who “resemble the Franks, but are more ruddy...”. Attention is paid to women - they are “beautiful in face and very pretty.”

Characteristics of Russians

IN XIX century famous scientist Anatoly Bogdanov created a theory about characteristic features ah Russian man. He said that everyone quite clearly imagines the appearance of a Russian. To support his words, the scientist cited stable verbal expressions from people’s everyday life - “pure Russian beauty”, “the spitting image of a hare”, “a typical Russian face”.

The master of Russian anthropology, Vasily Deryabin, proved that in their characteristics Russians are typical Europeans. In terms of pigmentation, they are average Europeans - Russians are more likely to have light eyes and hair.

An authoritative anthropologist of his time, Viktor Bunak, in 1956-59, as part of his expedition, studied 100 groups of Great Russians. Based on the results, a description of the appearance of a typical Russian was compiled - he is light brown-haired with blue or gray eye. Interestingly, a snub nose was recognized as not a typical feature - only 7% of Russians have it, while among Germans this figure is 25%.

Generalized anthropological portrait of a Russian person

Research conducted by scientists using different scientific methods, allowed us to draw up a generalized portrait of the average Russian person. The Russian is characterized by the absence of epicanthus - the fold at the inner eye that covers the lacrimal tubercle. The list of characteristic features included average height, stocky build, broad chest and shoulders, massive skeleton and well-developed muscles.

A Russian person has a regular oval face, predominantly light shades of eyes and hair, not too thick eyebrows and stubble, and moderate facial width. In typical appearances, a horizontal profile and a bridge of the nose of medium height predominate, while the forehead is slightly sloping and not too wide, and the eyebrow is poorly developed. Russians are characterized by a nose with a straight profile (it is identified in 75% of cases). The skin is predominantly light or even white, which is partly due to the small amount of sunlight.

Characteristic types of appearance of Russian people

Despite a number of morphological characteristics characteristic of Russian people, scientists have proposed a narrower classification and identified several groups among Russians, each of which has distinctive external features.

The first of them is the Nordids. This type belongs to the Caucasoid type, common in Northern Europe, in northwestern Russia, and includes some Estonians and Latvians. The appearance of Nordids is characterized by blue or green eyes, an oblong skull shape, and pink skin.

The second race is the Uralids. It occupies a middle position between Caucasians and Mongoloids - this is the population of the Volga region, Western Siberia. Uralids have straight or curly dark hair. The skin has a darker shade than the Nordids, and the eye color is brown. Representatives of this type have a flat face shape.

Another type of Russian is called Baltida. They can be recognized by their medium-width faces, straight noses with thick tips, and light hair and skin.

Pontids and Gorids are also found among Russians. Pontids have straight eyebrows and narrow cheekbones and lower jaw, a high forehead, brown eyes, thin lips and straight light or dark brown hair, a narrow and elongated face. Their fair skin takes tan well, so you can find both light-skinned and dark-skinned pontids. Gorids have more pronounced features than Baltids, and their skin pigmentation is slightly darker.

There are many opinions about the external features characteristic of Russian people. They all differ in criteria and morphological characteristics, but, nevertheless, have a number of common indicators. After analyzing each type, many of us will find similarities with our appearance and perhaps learn something new about ourselves.

It is worth saying that genetic research is still underway today and debates on the topic continue.

Geneticists refute popular theories about the influence of the Tatar-Mongol invasion on the “indigenous” gene pool

There is a common opinion that there are simply no Russians as a people, and they all remain in the legends of deep antiquity, and at present the country is inhabited by mestizos of a thousand and one bloods. And, naturally, they refer to the fact that Rus' spent 250 years under the Mongol-Tatar yoke. Actually this is not true.

Who inherited it?

It must be said that over the past ten years the genetics of Russians from Smolensk to Vladivostok have been studied in great detail. Doctors of Biological Sciences made a huge contribution to the study of the issue. Elena Balanovskaya and her son Oleg Balanovsky. Balanovskaya’s monograph “The Russian Gene Pool on the Russian Plain” is considered one of the fundamental works on this issue.

Important research was carried out by the head of the genetics laboratory of the Institute of Biological Problems of the North, Doctor of Biological Sciences Boris Malyarchuk.

Scientists note that in the Russian genome, when examining mitochondrial DNA inherited through the female line, only 2% of Mongolian characteristics are found. For comparison, for Poles and Czechs this figure is 1.5%. The study of heredity by male line(the so-called Y-DNA) even shows that the Mongoloid admixture constitutes about 0.2–0.5% of the Russian genome.

Researchers directly state that Tatar-Mongol invasion left no noticeable traces in the Russian genome. “The Russian gene pool is not intermediate between the typical European and Asian gene pool. The Russian gene pool is the most eastern of the typically European ones,” note the Belanovskys.

Malyarchuk agrees with them: “It has been established that, structurally, the mitochondrial gene pools of Czechs and others Slavic peoples(Russians, Poles, Slovenes) are practically the same.”

Geneticists have noticed that the frequency of Mongolian markers in the European part of the country increases not from west to east, but from south to north. This prompted them to assume that even those eastern characteristics that are found in the genes of Russians are not at all associated with the invasion of the 13th century, but with earlier processes of mixing the Slavs with Finno-Ugric tribes, which had characteristics similar to the Mongols. This assumption is also supported by the strong heterogeneity (heterogeneity) of the Russian genetic cluster.

The realities of medieval warfare

What happens: there was never any Tatar-Mongol yoke? Is the great storyteller right? Lev Nikolaevich Gumilev, and his opponents, all those boring archaeologists and unimaginative chroniclers, screwed up?

No, unfortunately. Unfortunately, there was a yoke, and Rus' was indeed dependent on the Horde for a long time.

The problem is that those who talk about the genetic consequences of this conquest transfer ideas about wars to the Middle Ages modern type. In this case, “mixing” refers to two processes: mass rape of women in captured cities and cross-marriages between the conquerors and the conquered population in subsequent years.

It can be difficult for a modern person to imagine the customs of that time. However, they are very clearly visible when studying sanitary burials from the time of the invasion of Batu Khan. In 2004–2005, an expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences led by Asya Engovatova explored mass graves in the historical center of Yaroslavl.

Scientists discovered that the male population was killed on the defensive ramparts and outskirts of the city. But women's and children's skeletons were discovered en masse in pits in the center of the settlement. Forensic analysis showed that most of the men died from slashing and crushing wounds inflicted on the face, and most of the women were killed by arrows.

Many townspeople were wounded in the back - this suggests that they tried to escape. Most children died from blows to the head; many were shot with bows, some were raised on spears (characteristic injuries remained on the spines and ribs of several children's skeletons).

In 2011, a similar discovery was made in the city of Vladimir. During excavations in the city center, archaeologists saw the same picture. The remains of people, randomly dumped in wells and utility pits, male skeletons with traces of two or three serious wounds - Russian soldiers fought to the last, - female and children's skeletons with pierced heads.

In the graves, scientists found not only fragments of winter clothing, but also a large amount of women's jewelry: the conquerors were not interested in enrichment, and certainly not in sexual pleasures. Faithful to the precepts of Genghis Khan, Batu’s warriors purposefully exterminated the population of rebellious cities.

Intolerant Muscovy

As for mixed marriages, here too the conquerors failed to “inherit.” The first decades after the conquest, the Golden Horde khans tried to exercise direct control over Russian cities.

For this purpose, tax collectors - Baskaks, who were accompanied by small detachments of Horde residents, settled in them. However, this practice was unsuccessful. The Russians of Suzdal, Tver, Yaroslavl and Rostov systematically rebelled, slaughtering the occupation forces.

The Horde invariably responded with punitive campaigns, during which the population of the rebel principalities was destroyed as mercilessly as under Batu. In general, assimilation according to the Bulgarian scenario did not work out in Rus'.

Later, when the pendulum of history swung in the opposite direction, and the Moscow kingdom began to absorb the Horde, which had broken up into separate khanates, the attitude towards the Tatars was very, very negative.

Unlike the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (the union Polish-Lithuanian state), Moscow rulers did not allow yesterday’s enemies to settle in compact groups on their territory. Tatar defectors were required to undergo baptism and linguistic assimilation. A telling fact: the first mosque in Minsk, which was then under the control of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, appeared in 1599, and in Moscow only in 1744.

Kitab is a text written in Belarusian in Arabic letters. The legacy of the mass resettlement of Tatars to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

When describing Ukrainians, they often resort to the old familiar stereotype - “black eyebrows, brown eyes.” But if you look closely, this cliché has long been outdated: among our compatriots there are fair-haired and dark-haired, brown-eyed and light-eyed representatives of Ukrainian lands. "Today" with the help of anthropologists and psychologists, identified seven main types of appearance of Ukrainians and found out what character traits they possess.

As explained to "Today" by Doctor of Historical Sciences, majoring in "Ethnology and Anthropology", leading researcher at the Institute of Ethnic Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Sergey Szegeda , globally all variants of Ukrainian appearance belong to one large anthropological type, which is already divided into several variants.

"The general type is very clearly expressed against the background European peoples and is called "Central Ukrainian", "Ukrainian" or "Dnieper". But they mean the same thing typical appearance: Round head shape, mostly dark eyes and hair, relatively wide face and straight nose. Such traits are characteristic of 60-70% of the inhabitants of our country. Nevertheless, within this general type there are different “shades” of Ukrainians, the clear boundaries of which have long been erased", explains Szegeda.

In addition, in addition to external differences, experts talk about the diversity of habits. As psychologists explained to us, the region of residence in combination with the historical past forms different character traits.

"Both weather conditions and the geography of the area have an impact here,” says psychologist Sergei Steblinsky. — For example, a lot of sun and warmth make local residents more joyful and emotional in the south of the country. But the inhabitants of the steppe Ukraine are easy about change and are prone to moving due to living on a plain where there are no natural barriers. If we take the residents of Western Ukraine, we can say that they are more hardened and resilient. The mountainous terrain creates in them intransigence and a keen sense of justice. But Ukrainians from the north are considered more gloomy, rational and skeptical due to the cold climate".

WHERE LIVE. In the old days, researchers most often encountered this type of Ukrainians in the North-Western Black Sea region, the Lower Dnieper region and partly in Bukovina. In modern Ukraine, these are Odessa, Nikolaev, Kherson, Zaporozhye and partly Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Lugansk regions and northern Crimea. The neighbors Moldovans, Romanians and Bulgarians are considered distant relatives of the Ukrainian southerners.

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE. Residents of the southern regions are characterized by a dark appearance: dark hair and eyes, a clear straight nose, men have a thick beard, mustache and chest hair. It is interesting that in appearance, southern Ukrainians are very similar to the inhabitants of the Carpathians, but they are taller, with an elongated face.

STORY. These Ukrainians inherited their appearance from their southern European ancestors: the Iranian-speaking Scythian-Sarmatian tribes who lived here before our era, as well as from the Turkish-speaking nomads of the times of Kievan Rus (for example, the Proto-Bulgarians).
character. It is traditionally believed that residents of the southern regions of Ukraine are more joyful, optimistic and have an easy-going attitude towards life. They received these character traits thanks to their measured life by the sea and warm climate. In addition, psychologists note that southerners have a sharp mind and a penchant for entrepreneurship.

WHERE LIVE. The name of this type speaks for itself - the largest number of its speakers live in the central part of the country and make up more than 60% of all Ukrainians. According to the first studies, central Ukrainians lived in the Middle Dnieper region, Podolia and Slobozhanshchyna. Today they can be found in Kyiv, Cherkasy, Kirovograd, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkov, and partially Donetsk, Lugansk and Dnepropetrovsk regions.

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE. As for external data, central Ukrainians are literally “average”: a medium-sized face, a round head, medium-sized cheekbones, eyes and forehead, relatively high growth, darkish eyes and hair. But there are exceptions: in some areas, Ukrainians are darker-haired and dark-eyed, while in others they have relatively flat faces.

STORY. Anthropologists explain the averageness in appearance simply: it was in Central Ukraine that since ancient times the paths crossed and the blood of a variety of tribes mixed: from the massive Dnieper-Donetsk people of the Neolithic era to the sophisticated Trypillians and from the Iranian-speaking Scythians to the local Proslavic peoples. To this day, in the Cherkasy or Poltava regions you can find descendants of Turkish-speaking peoples with flat faces and drooping upper eyelids, as well as descendants of Iranian tribes with dark hair and eyes.

CHARACTER. Psychologists say that central Ukrainians have very developed imagination and fantasy, but at the same time they are very contradictory. They are characterized by mood swings and well-being. The reason for this is the flat region of residence, because of which the central Ukrainians had few barriers and more opportunities.

WHERE LIVE. The second largest anthropological type of central Ukrainians (less than 10% of our country’s population belongs to it), according to earlier studies, lived at the junction of flat Galicia with western Podolia. In modern Ukraine, these Ukrainians are most often found in the Khmelnitsky, Vinnytsia and partly in the Ternopil regions.

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE. Representatives of the Danube type are more endowed with Caucasian features than others: a long narrow face, a straight and thin nose, light brown hair and dark eyes (from dark gray to light brown). Genetic brothers of this type of Ukrainians are found today among the Poles - in the Kholm region and in Tomashov.

STORY. Representatives of the Danube type are considered descendants of Celtic and Thracian tribes. This type was formed in the early Bronze Age and spread among the Slavs in the west of modern Ukraine. It is interesting that this type formed the basis of the anthropological characteristics of other peoples: Poles, Austrians, Germans and even Slovenes.

CHARACTER. Like other representatives of Central Ukraine, the “Danubians” are quite changeable, but at the same time very capricious and even anarchic. Moreover, among them there are many skeptics and individualists, which is why, in general, psychologists attribute to them a pessimistic-positive worldview.

WHERE LIVE. This type of northerners settled in the lands of ancient Polesie, Volyn, Northern Galicia and covers about 10% of Ukrainians. Nowadays, modern representatives of this type live partly in the Kiev region, in the Volyn, Rivne, Zhytomyr regions, as well as in the northern regions of the Lviv and Ternopil regions.

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE. Representatives of this type have enough light color hair, not too dark eyes and average height. Such Ukrainians have rather archaic facial features: a massive chin and stern eyebrows, a wide and low face. Similar appearance can be found in the southern Baltic, Belarus and western Russia.

STORY. like this characteristic appearance Polesie Ukrainians received thanks to the ancient connections of their ancestors with others northern peoples back in the Mesolithic and Neolithic eras.

CHARACTER. Experts note that Ukrainians of the Polesie type are characterized by a fairly active life position and a well-developed sense of aesthetics. In addition, they are considered to be quite emotional, dynamic, cheerful and decisive.

WHERE LIVE. This anthropological type, extremely rare for Ukraine, is found only in the north of the Chernigov region, namely in the Repkinsky district. Only 0.5% of Ukrainians are carriers of it. According to Ukrainian anthropologists, genetic brethren of the Upper Dnieper Ukrainians can be found among the northern Poles and Belarusians, Mordovians, western residents of the Komi Republic and some groups of Estonians.

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE. The main differences between Upper Dnieper Ukrainians are very light eyes and hair (sometimes even red hair), which is not typical for other residents of Ukraine. He also differs from the Polesie type in his narrower face, without archaic features, and rather tall stature.

STORY. Ukrainian anthropologists call the Upper Dnieper Ukrainians a fragment of the Ilmen-Dnieper type, which was distributed in the north-west of the European part of the Russian Federation (near the sources of the Dnieper River and Lake Ilmen).

CHARACTER. Psychologists attribute moderate cheerfulness and a calm disposition to this rare type of Ukrainians. They have a well-developed sense of beauty, a desire for harmony with nature, which flourishes brightly in the north of Ukraine.

WHERE LIVE. Anthropologists often call this type of Ukrainians eastern and include residents of mountainous regions: Transcarpathia, Hutsul region, Prykarpattya and certain regions of Bukovina. On the modern map of Ukraine, they can be found in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Transcarpathian, partially Chernivtsi and Lviv regions, as well as in the Western Ternopil region (with the exception of those territories characterized by the Polesie type). About 6-7% of Ukrainians belong to it.

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE. Representatives of the Carpathian type differ most from the typical Ukrainian: anthropologists note that they have a pronounced round head shape, a narrow and high face, a straight forehead, an inexpressive eyebrow and often a convex nose. Experts call their hair and eye color the darkest among all residents of Ukraine, and their height is very low. A similar appearance can be found among the Balkan peoples: Montenegrins, Bosnians, Serbs, as well as northern Romanians and Slovaks. But there is also a lighter version of the Carpathian type: its representatives have not so dark hair and eyes. Such Ukrainians are found much less frequently in this region of Ukraine, and their clear habitat is difficult to determine - due to dense mixing with the dark variant.

Anthropologists have long been arguing about what a Russian person looks like, and whether the nationality has retained ethnic purity. It is assumed that the proximity with representatives of other nationalities over thousands of years caused a mixture of nations, the loss of many distinctive features. However, geneticists are convinced that Russians are one of the most purebred peoples of Eurasia. It is possible to determine whether they belong to them based on their characteristic features.

How to determine nationality: typical features

Russians are considered a homogeneous population according to anthropological data. The basis of nationality is dominated by Slavic roots, but there is a share of Finno-Ugric, Baltic and Pontic ethnic groups.

To imagine what a Russian looks like, it is important to know what race he belongs to. Representatives of the nation are typical Caucasians.

Despite statements about the influence of the Tatars, Mongols and other peoples on the Russian ethnic group, geneticists have established that mixing did not lead to a pronounced change in appearance, the features remained the same. The solidity of the people and the stability of genes refutes the opinion that Russians are dying out as a nation.

There are practically no traces of interaction between nationalities among representatives of the modern northwestern, central, and southern regions of Russia. For example, epicanthus, which is typical for people of the Mongoloid race (with Asian facial features), is extremely rare among Russians (in 12 people out of 8.5 thousand examined).

There are 2 types of origin of a nation: northern and southern. The first population is externally similar to the Balts in terms of Y-chromosomal markers (transmitted through men). Mitochondrial DNA (female line) shows identical features with representatives of Western and Central Europe.

The south-central population, which includes the majority of Russians, forms a genetic group with Belarusians, Ukrainians, Poles and Poles. Here the unity of the East Slavic peoples is noted, their difference from the neighboring Finno-Ugric, Turkic, and North Caucasian nations.

Based on race, anthropology determines the types of appearance of Russians:

Each phenotype has characteristic features.

Face and head shape

The description of the appearance of the nationality includes typically Russian characteristics: the head is of medium size and in shape does not differ from the parameters of Europeans.

There is an unexpressed slope of the forehead and a weak eyebrow. The face is of moderate width with a medium-high bridge.

The photo shows the Russian poet Sergei Yesenin.

Uralids may have a flattened face and a moon-shaped shape, like Asians, mesognathia, the skin has a darker shade than other types of appearance.

However, Mongoloid characteristics are less pronounced than, for example, among the Mari (Finno-Ugric people in Russia). The Baltids have short heads. Pontids are characterized by narrow cheekbones, thin lips, a high forehead and straight eyebrows.

Nose

It is believed that national trait Russians have an upturned, snub-nosed “potato” nose. However, according to anthropological data, this form is characteristic of only 16% of the population. 75% have straight noses, 9% have concave noses.

The photo shows director, actor, screenwriter, producer Nikita Mikhalkov.

Representatives of the Arkhangelsk type of appearance are characterized by a wide sense of smell. A snub nose is not typical for Eastern Slavs and Slavs. This form is possible among representatives of the Ryazan type.

The photo shows one of the most famous Russian singers Nikolai Baskov.

Eyes

Russian nationality is characterized by predominantly light eye shades; epicanthus is absent.

The anthropological portrait of a Nordid includes blue or green eyes, Uralid and Pontid - brown.

The photo shows Maria Pogrebnyak, the wife of the Russian oligarch, football player Pavel Pogrebnyak.

Hair

For nationality, the classic ethnic feature is light hair pigmentation. Light brown color is more common, dark chestnut is common, and Uralids have a black tint.

The growth rate of hair, eyebrows, and beard is average.

Features of Russian appearance

The way to recognize a Russian in a stranger is to identify specific external features. Using them, foreigners identify representatives of Slavic appearance.

Researchers are unanimous in the opinion that Russians are distinguished by soft features. Purely national peculiarity rounded cheeks were considered (in Old Slavonic “lanits”), the beauty of which was emphasized by a pronounced blush.

Characterized by a regular oval face, white or light skin.

Women are perceived as beauties, and they are distinguished by their flashy, sometimes pretentious manner of dressing. Slavic men appear to foreigners as muscular fighters with a powerful torso (“oblique fathoms in the shoulders”).

Men

In the villages, pure Russian men have long been valued: strong, powerful heroes who are able to plow a field and defeat enemies. They have golden hands; they can do anything with them if they are not lazy. The definition of “sweet” appearance is not suitable for Russian men.

Representatives of the stronger sex are characterized by average height and stockiness. Among the masculine characteristics of Russians, broad shoulders and chest, a massive skeleton, and developed muscles are distinguished.

Shown in the photo famous actor, film director, TV presenter, producer, boxer Mikhail Porechenkov.

The portrait of an average man is characterized by features of the European type. Brown-haired people with light eyes or brown eyes are predominantly common.

The photo shows Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, the European population often considers Russian men to be ugly, who “do not count” in comparison with other nationalities. Most note their negligence, neglect; along with their courageous appearance, there is a “heavy” look and rudeness.

They are often fat, spoiled and look older than their biological age, a kind of ordinary example of the “new Russian” with a gold chain around their neck, surrounded by young vulgar Russian women.

This opinion is explained by the reluctance of Russian men to be in noble circles and in the field of world public attention. Therefore, it is often formed by analyzing the appearance and manners of individual representatives of the nation.

Women

Russian representatives of the fairer sex are distinguished by their beauty. They are characterized by a rounded oval face, high cheekbones, noble and thoroughbred features, light skin, green, blue, gray or brown eyes, light brown or dark brown hair, and blondes are often found.

The figure type of Russian girls is predominantly “pear” or “ hourglass", which is due to high levels of estrogen - the female hormone. Previously in fashion were fat girls, thin people were considered sickly. Over time, standards have changed.

The photo shows TV presenter, model Victoria Lopyreva.

Foreigners note the well-groomed nature of women, as well as their frequent stay “out of fashion”. They are characterized by excessive brightness and pretentiousness of their outfits (“like painted nesting dolls”). For example, in Italy, “Russian fashionistas” are women who look tasteless and tacky.

At the same time, the dignity of Slavic girls is to always look “on parade”, be it going to a restaurant or going to the store.

Children

The researchers' impressions of ancient Russian village life included a description of what large families looked like: “more than 10 people.” It was noted that the children had white hair and were similar in appearance to the Franks. What distinguishes a child from them is a healthy blush.

Children are characterized by features similar to adults: softness, light pigmentation of hair, skin, eyes.

In Russia, mixed marriages are common when the husband or wife is non-Russian.

The most widespread is the Danube, along which the settlement of the Slavs began to form along the lower reaches of the Danube and Vistula. Then the nation moved to the Carpathian region, and from there in the 7th-8th centuries to the east and northeast to Lake Ilmen.

Emerging threats to humanity in the person of Mamai, Napoleon, Hitler and other figures, although with heavy losses, were successfully suppressed by the Russians. Improving the military arsenal of the state from the serif line in ancient times and nuclear weapons these days, it exposes Russia as a powerful adversary and forces other countries to take its opinion into account.
